Luma Labs is Back with a New Shoulder Sling Strap - Cinch

Back in November, we posted that Luma Labs posted an open letter on their website that they were halting all sales of their Loop and LoopIt straps due to a company having the rights to a "camera sling strap".

But Luma Labs wasn't down and out. They had been working on a new camera strap concept the past 6 months at the time and with the patent issue, this was perfect timing. Their newest strap to hit the market is the Cinch. Here is what is stated on their site:
The Big Idea
Every camera strap and sling on the market comes with tradeoffs. Regular neck straps are convenient and secure, but aren’t comfortable all day. Slings are comfortable and fast, but sacrifice stability which can result in your camera bouncing about. As we watched photographers use straps and slings—including our own—we wondered if we could reset the balance of stability and comfort by introducing flexibility and versatility into the equation.

We went to the drawing board with one goal: Make a camera strap that lets you easily change how you carry your camera on-the-fly. Make one that allows you to snug your camera against your back so that you can move actively without it bouncing about, then easily transition to letting it comfortably rest at your side, ready to slide up to your eye in an instant. A strap that you can hang around your neck for a couple of minutes while you change lenses and which can hug your camera to your chest while sitting down. And to do all that while using proven connections that are compatible with tripod quick release plates.

The result is Cinch. It’s like no other strap out there.

Comfort
Cinch features is a soft, stretchy and strong neoprene shoulder pad. Our unique CZZ (Center ZigZag) construction allows Cinch to conform to any curve and distribute weight. Other shoulder pads attain comfort by being curved around a specific portion of your body; Cinch’s pad is comfortable at any position and with no need to center it on your neck or shoulder. It’s rolled edges make it comfortable against your neck. It’s comfortable on bare skin. You’ve got to feel it to be believe it.

Stability
Cinch carries your camera in a different way than traditional straps or slings. It attaches to a top bracket—left or right, Cinch is ambidextrous—and the tripod socket. The result is that your camera in a “down and in” position that hugs your body and keeps your camera stable. It uses the same proven and reliable 10mm webbing connections you’re used to using from other straps and the low-profile CinchMount socket adapter (one is included with every Cinch) fastens securely and won’t twist loose. No fiddly carabiners or fussy connectors.

Have a tripod quick-release plate? Many have strap mount points that Cinch can connect to directly. If you have a plate that doesn’t have a strap mount point, such as Manfrotto plates, we’ll have you covered with a solution in a few weeks.

Flexibility and Versatility
The breakthrough in Cinch’s design is its friction-based pull-tab adjuster on the front. It’s so important we laser engrave our name on it. You can grab the tab and instantly tighten and loosen Cinch on-the-fly. Want your camera close while you walk through a crowd? Grab the tab and tighten it a bit. Need to be ready for a quick shot? Loosen Cinch and it's as quick as a sling. Going out for a hike? Pull the tab and rotate the camera to your back where it will stay glued to you while scrambling over rocks. Want to tighten Cinch down to provide stability for long shots? You can do that too, as we found out from watching our testers.

Easy Sizing and Fit

We know that photographers come in all shapes and sizes. So we make Cinch in three sizes. If you wear an adult M, L, or XL shirt, you should get our regular Cinch. If you’re on the petite side, you should get a Small Cinch. If you wear XL or larger shirts, then get a Big Cinch. But don’t stress out too much about your choice. Thanks to its flexible nature and the fact that we’ve given the sizes a considerable amount of overlap in adjustment, you’ll certainly make the right choice right off the bat.

Once you have it in hand, fitting Cinch is easy. Just put your Cinch over your shoulder, loosen the pull tab adjuster and the use the rear metal adjuster until your camera is positioned just right. If needed, you can also tighten or loosen the 10mm webbing that connects to your camera to adjust things to perfection. Once set up, the front pull tab adjuster gives you just the right amount of on-the-fly adjustments to keep up with any day of photography.

Quality

Cinch is like no other camera strap available today and we've never built any of our products like anyone else. Cinch's shoulder pad is reenforced with mil-spec mechanical stretch webbing and easily holds over 250lbs. Edges are all finished with die-cut, full grain American leather. The polymer camera connectors and webbing are all the same kind that NASA specifies and flies. Our metal hardware is all CNC machined aerospace grade aluminum. For the geeks out there, it’s 6061-T6 that’s been Type II anodized. CinchMount is black-oxide finished ordinance steel.

We don’t skimp on anything. It’s simply not in our nature. Even the smallest of details has been lovingly designed for maximum utility and enjoyment.

One more thing we should mention: Each and every Cinch is crafted in our hometown of Portland, Oregon USA.
If you're interested in more information or want to purchase the Cinch, visit Luma Labs website. Do note that although they are accepting orders, they won't ship until late January 2012.

UNDFIND's ONE Laptop and Camera Bag System

UNDFIND'S ONE LAPTOP AND CAMERA BAG SYSTEM IS FUNDED AS OF 12/16/11!
YOU CAN STILL PLACE YOUR PLEDGE BY 1/7/12. BAGS DON'T SHIP UNTIL FEBRUARY 2012

We try to bring you the latest news, reviews, deals and occasionally new products that you may find interesting. At the same time, we try and help companies get their name and products out. As we were browsing the internet, we found a company called UNDFIND (pronounced "undefined") on Kickstarter, and noticed that they make gear for us photographers. We're all for new start-up companies and releasing new and exciting products for photographers. The more the merrier!

If you're not familiar with Kickstarter, its a place for entrepreneurs to kick start their business. Those interested in a product can "pledge" money to help fund their project. If the companies/persons pledged goal is met, it goes into production and you get your product. If it does not, you don't pay anything and the company won't be able to make the product. Companies like Peak Design's Capture Clip System and Custom SLR's Split Strap and Glide Strap all started on Kickstarter.

Like Peak Design and Custom SLR, UNDFIND is looking to make a splash in the market with their ONE bag. As of this post, they have $6,565 out of their $10,000 goal. Project will be funded if they reach their goal by January 7, 2012.
  • If you pledge $15 or more, you get two (2) designer FISHBOMBS for filters and accessories (retails $30).
  • If you pledge $39 or more, you get THE WAIST SHOOTER SET with designer cover and strap for quick lens changing (retails for $69).
  • If you pledge $65 or more, you get THE ONE BAG LAPTOP SET with NO photo insert, designer cover and strap (retails for $89).
  • If you pledge $79 or more, you get THE ONE BAG CAMERA & LAPTOP SET with photo insert, designer cover and strap (retails $129).
  • If you pledge $109 or more, you get THE ONE SYSTEM which consists of THE WAIST SHOOTER SET and THE ONE BAG CAMERA & LAPTOP SET (retails $189).

For more information or if you want to pledge towards their goal, visit UNDFIND's Kickstarter. Hopefully, we'll be able to review UNDFIND's products in the near future.

Below is some information about the products offered...

Review: CPTech B-Grip EVO Camera Belt Clip Holder

Review: CPTech B-Grip EVO Camera Belt Clip Holder

Overview : B-grip EVO by CPTech is the innovative system for carrying a DSLR Camera on your hip. A universal carrying system in which your DSLR does not depend on laces, neck straps or a bag. Made with the highest quality materials EVO guarantees comfort, safety and on the fly availability of your DSLR. This translates into a purely pleasurable photographic experience in every condition of use. The camera is directly connected to the body allowing a freedom of movement and availability which has never been achieved before.

The camera does not swing continuously into the body when you are moving around. Its small form factor makes b-grip EVO unobtrusive and always available for a an unsurpassed ease of use. EVO will accommodate most configurations including flash, Zoom lens and a battery grip. EVO supports a weight up to 17.64 lbs and adapts to the needs of professional and recreational photographers alike.

The b-grip EVO development has been made with several tests and ergonomic studies. The high quality standard is guaranteed by the experience of CPTech, a leading company in the production of plastic injection.

Features :
  • The b-grip EVO has an assortment of new features that make it more convenient and safe than ever before
  • EVO has the addition of extra loops that offer even more stability; an additional belt can be used to secure the bottom of the base to your leg with "Han-Solo" like ease, keeping your camera firmly secured to your body
  • The addition of a removable rubber stopper around thumb screw on the base plate assures that your camera will not come loose from heavy movement and strenuous activity. In addition to rubber stopper EVO offer an additional easy to use safety thumb lock that prevents an accidental base plate release
  • The b-grip's WDS, Weight Discharge System is now further reinforced with a fiberglass loaded techno-polymer for light weight and ultra solid feel of support

Quality/Usability : Not everyone likes straps whether its around the neck or a sling strap like the BlackRapids. Hand straps are convenient but it leaves you with no hands free and forced to put the camera down. We had reviewed the Peak Design Capture Clip System. Although it was a great product, it didn't fair well with gripped and heavy camera setups. If you own a heavy or gripped camera and like the Capture Clip setup, there is another alternative. The CPTech B-Grip EVO's concept is the same but slightly different.

Included with the CPTech B-Grip EVO is a nylon belt, camera belt holder, quick release plate and instruction pamphlet. Unlike its counterpart, the B-Grip EVO is mostly made of durable plastic (fiberglass) ranging from the release plate, holder and buckle on the belt.

The top of the B-Grip has a release lever and a safety lock. These are also plastic. It don't see it breaking during normal usage but it would be nice to have some parts made from something more durable. You can use either the included nylon strap or your own belt to secure the B-Grip. If you're an active photographer, the B-Grip allows you to strap on another smaller belt to attach to your thigh. But if you own a camera with a grip, the B-Grip EVO is your best friend. The added length distributes the weight evenly. It doesn't leave your camera dangling in an awkward way.

Review: CPTech B-Grip EVO Camera Belt Clip Holder

Below are 4 images. The first set of images are with the included nylon B-Grip belt. The second set of images is with my own leather belt that I usually wear with my jeans. The included nylon belt is thick with plenty of length and of course, it has a plastic buckle/locking mechanism. To lock the strap, just slide the belt in between the buckle and tighten it. Once you get it to the correct tightness, just push the buckle down to lock the belt in place. Once locked, the strap won't move. However, since its plastic and with a simple pull, the strap can loosen. It would be nice to include a better buckle or a locking mechanism to prevent accidental unclipping.

Review: CPTech B-Grip EVO Camera Belt Clip Holder Review: CPTech B-Grip EVO Camera Belt Clip Holder
Review: CPTech B-Grip EVO Camera Belt Clip Holder Review: CPTech B-Grip EVO Camera Belt Clip Holder

As you can see from the pictures, even with all the weight of the camera being pushed down, the B-Grip keeps the camera perpendicular with my leg. With a gripped camera, your camera still sticks out from your body. With a flash attached to the camera will make it stick out even further. I highly suggest not using this setup if you're going to be in an area where there will be a lot of people. Even with my own belt, the camera does not pull my belt or pants down. But with added size, there will be some downsides such as trying to sit. It will get a little uncomfortable and may get in the way.

The top of the release plate has a rubber surface to prevent any friction and vibration. To mount the release plate to your camera, you'll need to remove the red stopper. Once removed, screw the release plate to the tripod socket of your camera/grip. A coin is required to tighten the mounting screw. Once the plate is securely in place, place the red stopper back onto the bottom of the release. This stopper will prevent the mounting screw for accidentally unscrewing itself.

Here is also a video on how to install the B-Grip:

Review: CPTech B-Grip EVO Camera Belt Clip Holder

Not only does the mount attach to the belt clip holder, it also has an integrated flip-out stand. The stand is very sturdy and great if you need to put your camera down. As you can see from the pictures below, even for a gripped camera, the stand keeps the camera up. Unfortunately, I do not have a 70-200mm to test how well it keeps your camera up but I don't think it will have any problems.

Review: CPTech B-Grip EVO Camera Belt Clip Holder Review: CPTech B-Grip EVO Camera Belt Clip Holder

The quick release plate is also compatible with certain ball heads and tripods. Click HERE for a list of compatibilities.

Conclusion : Overall, the CPTech B-Grip EVO Camera Belt Clip Holder is an alternative to neck/sling straps and hand straps. The B-Grip works great with gripped cameras. The added length and WDS (Weight Discharge System) is a great feature. I like that the quick release is multi-functional. Its a quick release, stand and works with tripods. The lightweight material is great as it does not add additional weight but it would of been nice if the release lever and safety lock wasn't made of plastic. I would also like to see a better buckle for the belt as it can unclip easily if it gets caught on something. With the added size, it would be a little hard to sit.

If you're the type of person that doesn't like or want anything hanging from their hips, CPTech also has a Travel Kit that allows you to strap the B-Grip holder to the strap of your backpack.

How to Perform a Stress Test on Your Memory Cards

In our previous post, we gave a list of programs that can help recover lost, deleted or corrupt memory cards. All storage devices have a potential of failing and being corrupt. They can fail on you at any time especially on the crucial moments or they won't. It would be hear wrenching to take your pictures of your family or for a client and all of a sudden, you lost them all due to a memory card failure.

But what if there was a way to lower the chances and try to prevent any corrupt data or faulty memory cards before you start taking your pictures or at a big event. Granted, the recovering of images can bring it back but it may not bring back everything or anything at all. At the same time, why give yourself a heart attack or stress?

To try and prevent any corrupt files, you can perform a test on your memory card by downloading any of these programs:

Press Release: Nikon Announces SB-910 High-End Speedlight

New Nikon SB-910 Speedlight Offers Advanced Flash Technology and Intelligent Features

MELVILLE, N.Y. (November 29, 2011) – Today, Nikon Inc. announced the addition of a new flagship speedlight, the powerful and capable SB-910 speedlight. Building on the versatility of Nikon’s Creative Lighting System (CLS), the SB-910 incorporates an enhanced intuitive operating system and graphic user interface (GUI). The SB-910 speedlight comes equipped with a wide zoom range covering the most popular focal lengths as well as FX/DX-format identification that optimizes zoom settings based on the camera body. This new speedlight also provides more efficient battery usage as well as an enhanced Thermal Cut-Out function.

“As Nikon’s new flagship speedlight, the SB-910 provides exceptional high performance and versatility that users have come to value in Nikon’s Creative Lighting System,” said Lisa Osorio, general manager of marketing at Nikon Inc. “By addressing the needs of photographers that work in challenging lighting scenarios, the SB-910 delivers a new level of portable lighting functionality, with performance and intelligent features that adapt to a wide range of lighting challenges.”

The SB-910 speedlight is designed to provide easy operation and menu navigation, with its enhanced operating system featuring illuminated function buttons, a dedicated Menu button with quick access to custom settings and an improved LCD screen graphic user interface. Whether the unit is used as an on-camera flash, wireless commander or remote, the SB-910 speedlight will provide dependable and consistent flash exposure. Engineered to address the creative lighting challenges faced by today’s photographers, the SB-910 speedlight includes quick on-demand performance and the ability to adapt seamlessly to nearly any possible lighting scenario.

Additionally, the new SB-910 incorporates a new Thermal Cut-Out function, which offers protection against damage to the flash panel and body from overheating during continuous flash use. Now, the flash recycling time is automatically delayed if a significant rise in temperature is detected, rather than ceasing operation to protect the unit. For additional durability, heat-resistance and ease-of-use, the SB-910 uses new hard-type color compensation filters for fluorescent and incandescent color temperature balancing. When using these filters, the flash automatically recognizes which filter is being used and adjusts white balance accordingly on the connected Nikon D-SLR camera. Additionally, the AF-assist illuminator of the SB-910 is compatible with the complete line of AF systems used in Nikon D-SLR cameras.

The SB-910 speedlight features three illumination patterns (standard, center-weighted and even) which are designed to match almost any shooting situation when utilizing the speedlight. The “standard” pattern will cover all conventional, standard flash coverage. The “center-weighted” pattern provides larger guide numbers than other light distribution types at the same focal lengths. This illumination pattern is ideal for subjects such as portraits, in which the light falloff at the image edges can be disregarded. When “even” is selected, the light from the flash will cover a subject from the center to the edges without light falloff. This pattern is applicable for shooting group photographs indoors. For coverage with a variety of lenses, the SB-910 speedlight incorporates a multi-step power zoom range that covers a wide 17-200mm angle of view, and can automatically detect Nikon FX and Nikon DX formats to help select suitable light distribution.

The SB-910 speedlight includes support for Nikon’s advanced wireless TTL operation and can function as a wireless commander with control over three separate groups of speedlights or as a remote speedlight triggered by other SB-910 speedlights, SB-700 speedlights, SU-800 Wireless Commander or the built-in speedlight set to Commander Mode on compatible Nikon D-SLR cameras. The SB-910 incorporates a high-speed recycling time of approximately 2.5 seconds for full power with NiMH batteries, and approximately 3.0 seconds with AA Alkaline batteries.

Optional water guards will be available for select cameras to protect the connection between the flash and camera, allowing users to utilize the flash when weather conditions are less than ideal. The SJ-4 Color Filter set provides a Warming, Red, Yellow or Blue filter for adding color to the background, foreground or just to accent the scene. The SB-910 will come equipped with the AS-21 Speedlight Stand, SW-13H Diffusion Dome, SZ-2FL and SZ-2TN hard type Color Compensation Filters and SS-910 soft case.

Price and Availability
Nikon’s new flagship speedlight, the SB-910, will be available in mid-December 2011 for a MSRP of $549.95. You'll be able to pick this up from Amazon, B&H Photo and Adorama.
