Review: Pelican 1500D Peli Desiccant Hydrosorbent Silica Gel Case

Review: Pelican 1500D Peli Desiccant Hydrosorbent Silica Gel Case
Image is for illustrative purposes.

Overview : The Pelican 1500D Peli Desiccant Silica Gel drinks dampness and prevents condensation from trapped air when cases are opened in high humidity climates. These re-usable canisters are perfect for extracting harmful moisture within small spaces, boxes and containers. Protects up to three cubic feet of sealed space per canisters. Simply include one of these canisters with your documents or artifacts and water vapor is contained within the desiccant canister to maintain a safe relative humidity.

Features :
  • Stops mildew before it starts
  • Reusable by oven drying yearly
  • Fits inside any case
  • Size: 2" x 4"

Quality/Usability : Protecting your expensive camera gear and lenses is very important. Although we have to deal with preventing dust, small particles, oil and finger smudges, what some people tend to forget is moisture. Moisture in the lens can lead to mold and fungus.

So how do we prevent this from happening? Well definitely keeping your gear in a dry area. But what if its unavoidable or you want that extra protection? Pelican 1500D Peli Desiccant Silica Gel. Ever buy new shoes or camera bags and they have those little packets inside? Those are silica gel packets. They are used to absorb moisture. Yes, you can use these and put them in your camera bag but they are too small and do not last long and you would need to throw them away.

The Pelican 1500D Peli Desiccant Hydrosorbent Silica Gel Case is the same as those small silica gel packets but bigger, reusable and intended to be used for important or expensive items such as camera gear/bag, guns and important documents. The Pelican 1500D contains 40 grams of silica gel and comes in a metal case. Don't worry, the case will not open and the gels will not fall out or stain your bag. This metal case has a small transparent window on top. This small window shows you the color of the silica gel. Blue means the gels are active and working. If the gels turn pink, it has absorbed moisture and would need to be reactivated. Having to recharge all depends on your location and how humid the air is.

NOTE: Colors of silica gels may vary depending on the type and brand you buy.

Below are some instructions on how to use it and recharge it:

How to Use Silica Gel : The Hydrosorbent Compact Unit, contains 40 grams of active silica gel, sufficient crystals to protect 3 cubic feet of enclosed space. The aluminum canister fits neatly into gun and camera cases, silver drawers, etc. No worry about stains: silica gel remains dry to the touch even when saturated. And it's chemically inert...Safe to use with foods, photographic materials, fine finishes, etc.

NOTE: Keep the area you are protecting enclosed as much as possible. Even hydrosorbent crystals cannot dry the entire outdoors!

When and How to Reactivate Unit : Note the small transparent "indicator" window on one side of the unit. When the crystals beneath are blue, the unit is active. When they turn pink, reactivate as follows: Place unit in vented 300° oven for 3 hours (or, until window turns blue again.) Hydrosorbent can be reactivated indefinitely, provides a lifetime of protection.

NOTE: Just remember that the case will be hot when removing since it is metal, so use a oven mitt or tongs to remove it from the oven and let it cool off before placing it back into your case/bag.

Conclusion : Overall, the Pelican 1500D Peli Desiccant Hydrosorbent Silica Gel Case helps prevent mold or fungus from building up on your camera lens. I bought 3 of these. One for each of my 2 camera bags and a spare if needed. When you use the Pelican 1500D Desiccant case, you get a feel for how much moisture is in your camera gear. It also gives you that sense of security that its protecting your expensive gear. The biggest draw back for me is that when it turns pink and you need to reactivate the silica gels, you have to stick it in an oven for 3 hours. If you have multiples of these, I suggest reactivating them all at the same time so you don't have to keep turning on and off your oven.

From what I have read on the web, desiccant or silica works ONLY in a sealed environment such as a tight sealed case. So is just putting these in a normal camera bag useless? I have no idea. But it gives you a sense of how much moisture is around.

This doesn't even have to be used for your camera gear. This can be used for important documents, gun cases or even your collectible sport cards or toys.

Review: LensPen Lens Cleaning with Retractable Soft Brush Pen

Review: LensPen Lens Cleaning with Retractable Soft Brush Pen

Overview : A superb new tool in optical lens cleaning technology.

Perfect for cleaning camera lenses, binocular lenses, small aperture spotting scopes and telescopes, eyepieces, and other optical items. Comes with a handy retractable dust removal brush and a special non-liquid cleaning element, designed to never dry out. Safe and very easy to use.

Features :
  • Will not scratch or damage lenses
  • Outperforms all other lens cleaning devices
  • Unique LENS PEN tip is self replenishing
  • Patented dry carbon compound
  • Patented Carbon formula effectively cleans amino acids from fingertips and other sources from optics and screens without damaging the surface.
  • Cleaning compound will not spill or dry
  • Brush on opposite side of cleaning tip for removing surface dust
  • Safe for all optical lenses including multicoated surfaces
  • Designed for cleaning camera and camcorder lenses, binoculars, scopes, night vision goggles and other sport optical devices.
  • Quickly cleans fingerprints, smudges, grease marks and dust off lens surface
  • Environmentlly Friendly
  • Non-Toxic

Quality/Usability : The LensPen has been around for quite some time but I only purchased it because it came in a bundle when I purchased a Giottos Rocket Air Blaster Blower (review of this coming soon). Prior to the LensPen, I always used a microfiber cleaning cloth to clean my lens. Although it worked, I was always afraid of any small particles that didn't come off, might scratch my lens.

The LensPens works wonders! It takes off oil, smudges and fingerprints without using much effort. The LensPen has two sides; cleaning tip and retractable brush. The retractable brush is to clean off any dust or small particles. When cleaning, I always have the lens facing down. This is so that any particles will fall down. The cleaning tip is the main attraction. It removes smudges that a microfiber cloth wouldn't. On one of my lenses, it had oily smudges. Every time I tried to wipe it clean, it got worse or moved to a different spot. With the LensPen, it removed it all and left no smudges.

To use the LensPen, take off the cap and rub the tip of the pen in a circular motion all around the lens. If the fingerprint or smudge is still there, go over that area until its gone or breathe gently and clean it again. Underneath the cap, there is a foam pad filled with carbon that recharges the cleaning tip. To clean the tip, simply place the cover back on and twist the cap back and forth a couple of times. This will clean the tip and ready for your next use.

Carbon is found in printers ink which is found in newspapers. Did you know that you can even use newspapers to clean windows? It leaves no smudges and it's better than paper towels.

Here is an instructional video:

Conclusion : Overall, the LensPen Lens Cleaning with Retractable Soft Brush Pen. This is a MUST own for any photographer or videographer especially when it costs under $10. The LensPen is an investment when it comes to protecting your expensive lenses and priceless pictures. This is my go to cleaning when it comes to my lenses but I use the occasional microfiber if the lens is really dirty and I don't want to ruin the LensPen.

The LensPen is sold under different brand names but still has LensPen on it. However, there are fakes and imitations out there. Here are a few ways to tell if they are fake or real:
  • LensPen and DigiKlear pens have “LensPen” inscribed in the Top of the cap.
  • On the rear side of every backcard is written “Distributed under the Authority of Parkside Optical Inc. Vancouver, Canada”.
  • More information and other LensPen brand (PDF)

Review: Hufa Holder The Original Lens Cap Clip

Review: Hufa Holder The Original Lens Cap Clip

Overview : Camera owners sometimes lose their lens caps or don't have the pocket to store their lens cap. Hufa solves this problem by keeping the lens cap close to the SLR Camera Lens and user at all times.

The Hufa Holder is the perfect camera accessory for all of you SLR Camera needs. It fits all kinds of SLR lens cap including Nikon Lens, Canon Lens, Sigma Lens and Tamron Lens caps.

Gone are the days of forgetting your lens cap at the beach, on a park bench, at the birthday party or the big game. Keep your lens cap free of dust, sand, dirt, and water by securing it safely out of harm's way. Keeps your lens cap out of your dog's mouth, out from under car tires, and out of the sand box.

Features :
  • Holds different sized lens cap
  • Keep your lens cap clean and safe
  • Fits all types of SLR neck straps
  • Fits most camera bags and lens bags
  • Made of durable plastic
  • Never lose a lens cap again!

Quality/Usability : It's frustrating sometimes trying to look for your lens cap. It's worse when you lose them for good. But photographers usually place them in their camera bag or in their pants pockets to prevent them from being lost or misplaced. Putting them in your pants pocket is the most convenient as you'll have it on you but what happens if they accidentally fall out, makes you feel uncomfortable or worse, break on you when you sit on them by accident?

I know some photographers don't care much about lens cap but to me, it's essential. I try to keep my glass as clean and immaculate as possible and that is why I keep my lens cap near me at all times with the Hufa Holder. It's a lens cap clip that attaches to your neck strap or the strap of your camera/lens bag.

Installation is very simple. Simply slip it over the strap and thats it! Once attached to your strap, all you have to do is put your lens cap in. It does not take much effort to slide in and out your lens cap. I placed the Hufa Holder on my BlackRapid RS-Sport. I like to place it high and near my chest but the width of the nylon strap on the BlackRapid is too narrow. So the Hufa doesn't have much to hold on to and moves when you slide your lens cap in and out. Placing it on the padded strap is too thick and too wide for the Hufa. So what is the proper way of putting the Hufa on to the strap? Since I'm using a BlackRapid strap, the width of the strap is thin. If the strap goes over the edge and under the Hufa, the Hufa doesn't have much to cling on to. This results in the Hufa Holder moving around or even falling off when trying to insert the lens cap.

Review: Hufa Holder The Original Lens Cap Clip Review: Hufa Holder The Original Lens Cap Clip
left: strap going over and under Hufa
right: strap going under and through the middle of Hufa

If the strap goes under the edge and through/over the middle of the Hufa, the Hufa is sturdy and doesn't budge. But I noticed that if the top of the lens cap is facing up (out), sometimes I have a hard time putting it in because it gets caught on the strap. But if I flipped it around where the top of the lens cap is facing towards the strap (down), it slides in easier due to the flat surface of the lens cap. I'm still trying to figure out a way to remedy this. I can probably slip something that is the width of a normal strap so that it prevents the BlackRapid strap from slipping out easily.

Review: Hufa Holder The Original Lens Cap Clip Review: Hufa Holder The Original Lens Cap Clip
left: strap going under the through middle with lens cap facing up
right: strap going under the through the middle with lens cap facing down

But this problem does not exist on a strap with normal width such as a camera bag or shoulder bag. I placed this on the shoulder strap of my ThinkTank Speed Freak v2 camera bag and it was a perfect fit. It didn't move and stayed in place. The lens cap slipped in and out of the Hufa without a problem.

Review: Hufa Holder The Original Lens Cap Clip Review: Hufa Holder The Original Lens Cap Clip

Conclusion : Overall, the Hufa Holder The Original Lens Cap Clip is a useful camera accessory. Installation was very easy. It doesn't get in the way or take up much room. It doesn't seem to be a perfect fit for thin straps but it requires some fiddling. If you plan on purchasing, it's best to purchase 3 for $33. That makes each Hufa, $11 each with a total savings of $5.85, if you were to buy each separately at $12.95. You'll want to put one on your neck strap, camera bag, use them as backups in case you accidentally lose them, someone steals them because the thieves are jealous or give it to your fellow photography friend.

Review: BlackRapid RS-Sport Camera Strap with FastenR-3 and ConnectR-2

Review: BlackRapid RS-Sport Camera Strap with FastenR-3 and ConnectR-2

Overview : Can't stay still? The RS-Sport will keep your gear safe and steady in even the most strenuous situations. Slide the camera up the strap to grab that perfect shot. With its sturdy design and under-arm safety tether, the RS-Sport isn't going anywhere, even if you are.

The BlackRapid RS-Sport Extreme Sport Strap is designed to hold and keep an SLR camera and lens steady in even the most strenuous shooting situations. Slide the camera up the strap to grab that perfect shot. The strap has an under arm safety tether that keeps the camera secure. It includes a CR-2 connector-2, FR-3 fastener-3 and a BRAD MOD that secures the camera to the strap.

Features :
  • Holds SLR camera with lens attached
  • Under arm safety tether
  • FR-3 fastener couples to connector-2
  • CR-2 connector-2 a smooth swivel with a positive lock to ensure the safety of the camera and lens
  • BRAD MOD secures the strap during action shots

Quality/Usability : Comparison review between RS-Sport and RS-Sport 2 can be found HERE.

Many people use the BlackRapid straps for different styles of photography such as family events, sports, wedding and studio work whether you're a professional, amateur or beginner. BlackRapid has different camera straps such as the RS-4, RS-5, RS-7, DR-1 Double Strap, DR-2 Slim Double Strap and RS-W1 Women's. Each are different from each other but they all serve the same purpose: hold your camera and doing it comfortably at the same time.

My camera gear consists of a Nikon D7000 DSLR (body only/body & kit lens), MB-D11 grip, SB-600 flash and a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 lens. With all this attached, the camera can get very heavy after a long period of time. So getting a strap that is comfortable not only short term use but long term use is a major factor.

The newest BlackRapid camera strap to their line up is the RS-Sport. The RS-Sport is geared more towards photographers who are more active. The quality and craftsmanship you get in any of the R-Straps is also found on the RS-Sport. In addition to the new RS-Sport strap, BlackRapid has changed their packaging. No longer are straps shipped with a drawstring mesh bag but they now come in a box. This makes their product more professional looking and easier to display in stores.

The RS-Sport is worn diagonally across the torso from shoulder to hip and is adjustable to fit most photographers. The pad has a mesh underside for comfort and breathability. Rather than a straight design, the shoulder pad has a unique shape to it. The strap contours your body when its over your shoulder so you do not have to worry about the strap rubbing against your neck. To adjust the strap, simply rotate the strap to the front of your chest and pull on the strap or tug on the clip. This will loosen the strap to your desired length. Or you can just take the strap off the adjust. Due to the unique design of the strap, there is no zipper for storage. The RS-Sport also does not allow you to add any mods such as pouches onto the strap.

But what the RS-Sport does include that would need to be purchased separately for the RS-4, RS-5 and RS-7 is the BRAD mod. The BRAD is know as the BlackRapid Arm Defense. This goes under your arm and prevents the strap from migrating backwards. Since the RS-Sport is shorter in length compared to the other R-Straps, the BRAD sits a little closer to your armpit. If you don't have a need for it, you can remove it. The video below will give you more information about the BRAD.

To connect the R-Strap to your camera, it consists of two things: ConnectR and FastenR. The FastenR attaches to the tripod socket located on either the camera body or the lens. The ConnectR clip is strong, swivels smoothly and locks to ensure the safety of your camera. Once connected, the camera hangs upside down, resting securely at your side or in the small of your back, with the lens pointing behind you. Since the FastenR takes your tripod socket, your camera will no longer sit flat on the table and will have to be on its side or faced down. This also means no hand straps on your DSLR. If you own a tripod, it will get annoying as you will have to unscrew the FastenR from the camera, screw the camera onto the tripod. When you're done, just repeat the process in reverse order. However, if you own a Manfrotto 200PL-14 QR Plate, BlackRapid has a FastenR-T1 that replaces the screw on your quick release plate with a compatible BlackRapid version. This allows you to leave the QR plate on your camera at all times and use the R-Strap. When you need to mount the camera to the tripod, simply unclip the ConnectR from the T1 and slap the camera with the QR plate onto your tripod. No more having to unscrew and taking up your precious time.

On the strap, there are two plastic bumper clips...one near your chest and one towards the back. You can slide these up and down the strap. The purpose of the bumper clips is to prevent your camera from moving. Moving the one near your back down to your hips stops the camera from going further back but it also brings your strap back to its normal position if the strap migrates towards your back. Sliding the bumper near your chest all the way down to the bottom and behind, prevents your camera from moving. With this, you can walk around without having the fear of your camera moving around or smacking into things. When you need the camera, move the chest bumper back up and bring your camera up to your face and begin taking shots.

With the camera at your hip or behind your back, you can maneuver easily through a crowd, carry a tripod or other gear or simply have both hands free. When you’re ready to take the shot, the camera quickly glides up the strap into shooting position.

On June 25, 2011, my god-daughter was celebrating her 2nd birthday. With all the kids running around, I thought it would be a perfect time to try out the RS-Sport in a busy environment. When I needed the camera, getting it in shooting position was a snap. When it came time to running after munchkins, helping clean and carry things, this is where the strap outshines ALL other camera straps. I moved the chest bumper down to my waist to lock the camera in place and I was able to do things I normally wouldn't be able to do if the camera was in front of my chest with the strap hanging from my neck. I was also able to have my camera on my side, a drink in one hand and catch/throw a frisbee with the other. Even bending/kneeling for the frisbee on the ground, the BRAD strap held the RS-Sport in place.

All BlackRapid straps are compatible with all cameras with tripod mount whether they are Digital SLR's, Point and Shoot or video cameras whether its a Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Fuji, Sony, Casio, JVC, Kodak, Pentax and many others. So as long it has a tripod mount at the bottom of the camera, it will work.

Conclusion : Overall, the BlackRapid RS-Sport Camera Strap with FastenR-3 and ConnectR-2 is a must own camera strap if you're an active person (even if you're not). The BRAD definitely helps with keeping the strap in place and preventing the strap and camera from moving. Even if you're not active, the camera strap is very very comfortable. The distribution of weight is so perfect that you probably won't notice it and you definitely will not be in pain. Of all the things I own, this is my #1 favorite camera gear (besides my camera).

The new RS-Sport 2 is the pretty much the same but RS-Sport 2 strap is not as wide.

DIY: Nikon/Canon DSLR Camera DK-17M Magnifying Eyecup/Eyepiece Mod

I've been looking for a viewfinder for my Nikon D7000 DSLR Camera (body only and body and kit lens - see all Digital SLRs) that sticks out further, something similar to what is available for the Nikon D700. I wear glasses and my face tends to touch the LCD screen leaving smudges. So I've been googling and there hasn't been much information.

Nikon has magnifying viewfinders for the D7000 such as the Nikon DG-2 2x Eyepiece Magnifier and Nikon DK-21M Magnifying Eyepiece (see all Camera Power Adapters) but it's either too big or too small. There is also the Tenpa 1.22x or 1.33x magnification but would you really trust ordering something overseas that costs approximately $50 and end up not liking it? I've also read that magnifiers are usually used for those who use manual focus lenses. So I thought I would make mine a little different and unique from the rest of the Nikon D7000's and be able to use OEM Nikon products. By purchasing from reputable stores such as Amazon, B&H Photo and Adorama, if I didn't like it or decided not to go through with the mod, I return them for a refund. If I had already started to mod the DK-22, I wouldn't be able to return and just each the cost of it.

I'm going to be showing 2 options using all original OEM Nikon products. Both options work on Nikon DSLR's such as D70, D70s, D300, D300s, D90 and on some Canon DSLR's such as Canon EOS 5D, Pentax, Olympus and Sony (you may need to do some additional research).

CANON EYECUP EYEPIECE NIKON OPTION #1 (NON-MAGNIFICATION) NIKON OPTION #2 (DK-17M MOD)

If you own a Canon camera and don't want to do the mods discussed in this article, or you're a loyal Canon user and just want to know what is Canon's solution, you can purchase the Eyepiece Extender EP-EX15 or EP-EX15II. These are direct eyepiece replacements. The EX15's extend the eyepiece 5/8" (15mm) from the camera body and reduces viewfinder magnification by 30%.

The EP-EX15/EX15II do not fit the EOS 7D, 7D Mark II, 5D Mark III, 5D Mark IV, 5DS, 5DS R, 1D C, 1D Mark III, 1D Mark IV, 1D X, 1D X Mark II and 1Ds Mark III (see below for compatible eyepiece).

On February 6, 2015, Canon Magnifier launched two viewfinder accessories. The MG-Eb is for APS-C format EOS Digital SLR cameras that are compatible with Eyecup Eb. The MG-Ef is for EOS Digital SLR cameras that are compatible with Eyecup Ef. Both magnify the viewfinder image by approximately 1.2x.
