Review: Gary Fong GFLSC01 Lightsphere Collapsible Flash Diffuser

Review: Gary Fong GFLSC01 Lightsphere Collapsible Flash Diffuser

Overview : The Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible has provided photographers with the ability to achieve studio-style lighting effects at weddings and other location shoots with one simple diffusion tool. The Lightsphere Collapsible’s illumination pattern is designed around a 360-degree concept. It’s conical shape and translucent material disperses the light up, down and side-to-side as well as being targeted towards the subject. The Lightsphere illuminates the area surrounding the subject including the background and fits almost any flash.

Features :
  • Collapses down to a 1½ inch thick ring allowing for easy storage
  • Utilizes patent pending sizing ribs that provide an equally tight fit to several sizes of flashes without the need for straps or banks
  • Equivalent output to a half cloud
  • The Inverted Dome is included with every lightsphere collapsible purchase
  • Works with your existing accessory domes, amber dome and chrome dome (not included)
  • One Size Fits All - including: Nikon SB600/700/800/900, 430ex(II)-580ex(II) Canon, Leica SF-58, Olympus FL-36-40, Pentax AF540FGZ, Sony HVL-F42/56/56am/58/58AM, Sigma EF530-610, Sunpak PZ42XS, Bower SFD Series Flashes, Vivitar DF383-400, Metz 44-58AF, Nissin Di622-866 + hundreds more.

Quality/Usability :  We've used flash at weddings, parties and events but we've also been on the other end of the flash getting blinded by the light. Taking a picture with a flash mounted on your camera is convenient but it blinds people when pointed directly and it also leaves a harsh shadow on your subject. A few basic rules when using flash is that the closer and larger the light source, the softer the light will be on your subject.

Some use softboxes but they aren't portable. Many have used flash diffuser caps that go right over the flash. These are small, portable but they are usually cheap and fall off. There's also bounce cards or bouncing the light behind you.

What if there was a product that gave you "studio lighting" quality lighting using your flash? Enough to light up your subject but without blinding anyone and leaving harsh shadows? We've all heard of Gary Fong and the Lightsphere. He revised the Lightsphere with a new feature...being collapsible!

Here is a unboxing video of the Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible:

The Lightsphere Collapsible is made of thick durable rubber. The adapter is to be used with a chromedome. If you don't own a chromedome, it would be of no use since domes fit on the LSC without it. The Lightsphere Collapsible isn't too clear or opaque like other diffusers on the market. The inside also allows you to use filter kits.

Nikon SB-600 (l-r) - Dome facing out; Dome off; Lightsphere Collapsed

The Lighsphere Collapsible fits over multiple external flash units (one size fits all). Once it is mounted onto the flash, it looks big. When you're not using the LSC, it can be collapsed down to 1½ inches which can be easily stored away in your camera bag or left on your flash if not needed. It takes a little practice to get the Lightsphere over the flash.

Review: Gary Fong GFLSC01 Lightsphere Collapsible Flash Diffuser

Gary Fong also includes a instruction card with all Lightsphere Collapsible which has mounting instructions as well as helpful setting recommendations.

Review: Gary Fong GFLSC01 Lightsphere Collapsible Flash Diffuser

It's suggested that you rotate the flash head 90 degrees. The reason for this is because if you turn your camera vertical (portrait mode), all you have to do is bend the flash head. The Lightsphere Collapsible is still vertical no matter how you have your camera oriented. If you turn your camera back to horizontal (landscape), just put the flash head back to its vertical position.

Nikon SB-600 (l-r) - Dome facing out; Dome facing in, Dome off

With the Lightsphere Collapsible and no dome, it should be used when you're indoors because you want to use the light bouncing off the ceiling as a fill light. With the dome facing out, the entire Lightsphere Collapsible is entirely lit and makes for a larger diffuser. This should be used when there is a low ceiling because you'll have too much light coming from above. It can also be used outdoors when you want a little fill light with the flash and dome pointing directly at your subject (lens hood recommended). With the dome facing in, it doesn't make it a big diffuser because its not as high. If you're aiming the flash directly at your subject and you don't have a lens hood, you'll want to dome facing in.

How and when to use the Lightsphere:
  • Dome On (face out - Outdoors with lens hood) - Point flash at subject to give better lighting because its pointing directly at your subject and giving the strongest light possible.
  • Dome On (face in - Outdoors with no lens hood) - Point flash at subject to provide fill light. Being too close or trying to shoot too many people will cause a light fall off on the outer edges.
  • Dome Off (Indoors) - Point flash towards ceiling to bounce light off ceiling.
Here are some sample images (no retouching done) with flash pointed up:

Interior lights OFF (l-r): Dome facing out; Dome facing in; No Lightsphere attached—flash bouncing off ceiling

With the Lightsphere Collapsible, the subject has less shadows where as with the flash with no LSC and bouncing off the ceiling, there are signs of darker shadows.

Conclusion : Overall, the Gary Fong GFLSC01 Lightsphere Collapsible Flash Diffuser works great. It's definitely better than those cheap plastic diffusers that constantly fall off. The price may scare away potential buyers since cheap Chinese clones can be purchased for a fraction of the price. Do remember, what you pay is what you'll get. I think $40 would the be sweet spot, so if you happen to stumble on a used Lightsphere Collapsible for this price or find a deal online, definitely pick it up.

I like the fact that I can collapse the Lightsphere and tuck it into my camera bag without taking much room. Extending/collapsing the Lightsphere looks easier than it looks. It requires two hands.

If the Lightsphere Collapsible is too far down on the flash head, the flash head won't be able to click into place when you bend the flash as it will be in the way. With the camera held in portrait (vertical) mode, I'll get the same amount of diffused light as if I was holding it in landscape (horizontal) mode.

Nikon EN-EL15 Rechargeable Li-ion Battery Service Advisory Recall

Today, Nikon recalled some of the EN-EL15 rechargeable Li-ion batteries ($64.95 - Amazon / B&H Photo / Adorama) that are used with the Nikon D7000, D800, D800E and Nikon 1 V1 cameras. The reason for the recall is because of overheating. There were no overheating cases reported from users but the problem was discovered during the manufacturing process.

How to check your battery - check the 9th digit of the lot number. If the 9th digit of the lot number is E or F, you must replace your battery.

Continue reading for more detailed information.

Nikon Inc. is asking your cooperation in connection with a voluntary recall of certain lot numbers of its Nikon Model EN-EL15 rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. The battery pack can experience a short circuit causing it to overheat and possibly causing the outside casing to become deformed, posing a potential hazard to consumers. There have only been seven (7) confirmed reports of incidents of the problem worldwide, and while no injuries have taken place, Nikon Inc. has initiated this recall of the affected lot numbers as a reflection of its commitment to safety and product quality. We are asking that owners of the affected battery pack return them to Nikon Inc. for a free replacement.

The Nikon EN-EL15 battery pack is provided as a supplied accessory with the purchase of Nikon’s digital SLR D800, D800E, D7000 cameras and the Nikon 1 V1 advanced camera with interchangeable lens. It is also sold separately at retail under Nikon’s model number 27011. The EN-EL15 battery pack involved in this recall was first distributed by Nikon in March 2012 and is still being sold at retail.

This voluntary recall is limited only to those units of the Model EN-EL15 in lots E and F.

To determine whether a battery pack is in lots E and F and among those being recalled, first confirm that “EN-EL15” is written on the name plate on side of the battery pack, as shown on the photo below. Then on this same side of the battery pack, locate the lot number for your EN-EL15 battery pack. Lot numbers are alphanumeric characters printed in blank ink at the bottom of this name plate as shown in the photo below. Tilt the battery pack so that light shines directly on the area to see the lot number. If you have an EN-EL15 battery pack with the 9thdigit of the 14 digit lot number with either the letter E or F, you should immediately stop using it and remove the battery pack from the battery compartment. EN-EL15 battery packs with which the 9th digit is an A, B, C, D, G or any subsequent letter in the alphabet are not affected and not subject to this recall.

To return and receive your new EN-EL15 battery pack, click here or call toll free 1-800-645-6687. Nikon will then send a UPS courier to the address provided, bringing a new EN-EL15 replacement battery at the same time. At this time, UPS will collect the recalled battery for safe return to Nikon. Your EN-EL15 battery pack will be replaced free of charge within approximately 7-10 days of our receipt of your request for a new EN-EL15 battery pack.

If the lot number of your EN-EL15 battery pack does not indicate as determined above to be in lot E or F, your EN-EL15 battery pack is not subject to this recall. No other Nikon battery packs are involved in this recall. Nikon’s digital SLR D800, D800E, D7000 cameras and Nikon 1 V1 advanced camera with interchangeable lens as well as any other Nikon cameras are also not subject to this recall.

Nikon is committed to safety and to providing to its customers only the highest quality products. We regret any inconvenience this matter may cause you and appreciate your continued support of Nikon and its products.

REVOLVE: The Versatile, Portable and Affordable Camera Dolly

I guess you can consider us as photography gear whores. We love camera gear! We love it even more when entrepreneurs and small start up companies bring new photography items to the market. Sure, we have big name photography companies that make great accessories but sometimes, its photography/videography enthusiasts that come up with the greatest products without hurting our wallet. Jeremy Canterbury, designed and built the Revolve camera dolly which offers a low-cost, modular alternative to more conventional camera equipment.

To get this project started, Jeremy needs funding and this is where you and Kickstarter step in. If you haven't heard of Kickstarter, you'll be hearing about more often. Kickstarter allows entrepreneurs and inventors show off their products for everyone to see. If you like the product, you simply "pledge" funds. Depending on you pledge, you usually get the item at a discounted price. Once the goal is met at the end of the campaign, it goes into production and once its finished, its sent out to those who pledged. If the goal is not met, no money is taken from your or given to the entrepreneur. You can find out more information about Kickstarter here.

The Revolve dolly is $70 and will go into production after the funding period ends on May 6th, 2012. It's also compatible with a wide range of add-on accessories (including a ball mount, monopod, friction arm, and an inexpensive rail kit) that can be added to your pledge ranging between $20-$40.

Press Release: Nikon announces entry-level 24MP D3200 and optional WU-1a WiFi adapter

Nikon has announced the D3200 24MP entry-level DSLR that can be used with an optional WU-1a Wi-Fi module. The camera can now shoot up to 1080p30 video (rather than the D3100's 24p) and has a 920k dot LCD, up from 230k dots. Other than what we just listed and improved continuous shoot rate despite the pixel-count hike, the biggest change is the ability to add the Wi-Fi unit. The WU-1a will sell for a recommended sale price of $59.95 and will be able to broadcast to smartphones over a 49ft range. The D3200 is expected in late April at an MSRP of $699.95.

The WU-1a will be available in late May and will initially support image upload and remote viewing/shutter release with a free app for Android phones (version 2.3 and newer). An iOS version of the app will follow later in the year. Details are vague but the app allows full-sized or VGA images to be transferred from the camera and that a live preview is available on the phone, but with only the ability to fire the trigger, not change camera settings.

You can pre-order the Nikon D3200 from:
You can pre-order the WU-1a WIFI adapter from Amazon, B&H Photo or Adorama.

The Nikon D3200 Provides New D-SLR Shooters a Powerful Combination of Effortless Operation, 24.2-Megapixel High Resolution and Wireless Connectivity to Mobile Devices

MELVILLE, N.Y. (APRIL 19, 2012) – Today, imaging leader Nikon Inc. introduced the new 24.2-megapixel Nikon D3200 HD-SLR; a camera designed for photo enthusiasts ready to step up to a D-SLR or for the busy family memory keeper with an active lifestyle who demands a camera that can keep pace. From low-light to fast action, the D3200 delivers the amazing image quality Nikon is known for, either indoors or outside. Whether new to photography or upgrading from a point-and-shoot, the D3200 features Nikon's acclaimed instructive Guide Mode to help unleash the photographer in everyone. From candid action shots to staged portraits that flatter, the Nikon D3200 provides the power to capture every moment easily and beautifully with stellar image quality and in stunning Full HD (1080p) video.

Ready to tag along for any outing, the Nikon D3200's compact, lightweight body makes it easy to pack for a quick day trip or the long haul. A host of advanced features, including a super high resolution 24.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor, Full HD (1080p) video recording with full time autofocus (AF) and 4 frames-per-second (fps) high-speed continuous shooting mode, prepare the D3200 for challenging lighting conditions and fast paced action. Also, Nikon D3200 users will be able to take advantage of the new WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter. When connected to the camera, this optional adapter can wirelessly send images to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, preview an image before shooting and control the camera remotely.

"When every moment is as precious as the next one, having a camera that takes the guesswork out of photography is important," said Bo Kajiwara, director of marketing, Nikon Inc. "The Nikon D3200 HD-SLR offers effortless functionality and easy-to-use connectivity to mobile devices that answers the call for a capable, entry-level D-SLR that will change how you share amazing images with your friends and family."

Stunning Images to Last a Lifetime
The new Nikon D3200 delivers outstanding image quality no matter the user's skill level by leveraging Nikon's renowned technologies. The new 24.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor allows for incredibly sharp images with stunning detail and less noise, while Nikon's EXPEED 3™ image processing engine helps to create clear, lifelike images and video with vivid colors, smooth tonal gradations and low noise.

The Nikon D3200 grants users impressive performance in low-light, affording the ability to shoot with assurance even during night games and school plays. With a native ISO range that extends from ISO 100 to 6400, the D3200 can also be expanded to a high of ISO 12,800 for extreme low-light situations resulting in previously impossible photos. Additionally, Nikon's Scene Recognition System works in tandem with the camera's 3D Color Matrix Metering II to recognize factors such as color and brightness for balanced exposures, accurate AF, faithful white balance and beautiful flash photos.

Effortless Operation
Beginner photographers as well as those looking to expand their repertoire of shooting techniques will appreciate the Nikon D3200's Guide Mode which provides step-by-step photo instructions to capture amazing images. Easily accessible through the Mode Dial found on top of the camera body, the Guide Mode walks beginning D-SLR users through the process of set-up, shooting, viewing and deleting images. Because it asks the user what kind of creative photo technique they would like to learn, the Guide Mode has been widely acclaimed for its ability to build confidence and give users the tools to create amazing images. As more people discover the benefits of replacing their camcorder with a D-SLR, the Guide Mode also walks users through the best video settings to create home movies with blockbuster flair. For those with a more advanced skill level, the Guide Mode features helpful Assist Images that serve as a visual reference to inspire users and illustrate the desired result, while guiding them through easy-to-follow techniques.

Further taking the guesswork out of photography, the D3200 also includes six Scene Modes. Photographers can set the Mode Dial to Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close-Up or Night Portrait, and the D3200 will automatically adjust camera settings for optimal results in a variety of conditions.

Beautiful Home Movies in Full HD
When images alone can't tell the whole story, the Nikon D3200 offers the full HD experience of high quality 1080p video. Users can create memorable, cinematic quality videos at 24 or 30 fps and easily share HD content online with friends and family or on their own HDTV via the HDMI output.

Continuing down the path that its predecessor, the Nikon D3100, started, the D3200 implements full-time AF during video recording to help capture crisp video even during the most action-packed situations. To boost the production value of any home video, the camera offers manual or automatic exposure control, and a stereo microphone input to attach an optional external microphone such as the compact ME-1 Stereo Microphone. Furthermore, the D3200 offers other HD-SLR advantages including the ability to create a shallow depth of field, amazing low-light video performance and NIKKOR lens versatility.

Capturing videos on the D3200 is simple, even when in Live View. With a dedicated video record button and easy access to the Live View switch, users can capture video clips before the moment is gone. Additionally, videos play with astonishing detail and clarity on the D3200's 3-inch, high resolution 921,000-dot LCD screen.

A Camera to Keep Pace with an Energetic Existence
An active lifestyle requires a capable camera that is ready at a moment's notice, and the Nikon D3200 packs powerful technology to tackle just about any challenge. Delivering up to 4 fps in high-speed continuous shooting mode, the D3200 helps ensure that important, spontaneous and easy-to-miss memories are captured, from a baby's first smile to a game winning grand slam. Additionally, the D3200's advanced 11-point AF system allows the user to find and keep focus while maintaining a clear view of that subject. This advanced focusing system is ideal for capturing tricky subjects like a dancer mid-leap during the big recital or a dive for the line drive in centerfield.

Press Release: Canon USA Introduces EOS-1D C Digital SLR Camera Featuring 4K Hi-Res Video Capture

Newest Addition to the Canon Cinema EOS Product Line Combines the Convenient Form Factor of a Digital SLR Camera with Full HD and 4K Video Recording up to 4096 x 2160-Pixel Resolution

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., April 12, 2012 – Continually advancing the frontiers of digital high-resolution motion-image capture for film, television, and other industries, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the EOS-1D C digital single-lens reflex (SLR) camera.* Delivering outstanding video performance, the compact, lightweight EOS-1D C provides video recording at 4K (4096 x 2160-pixel) or Full HD (1920 x 1080-pixel) resolution to support high-end motion picture, television production and other advanced imaging applications.

Equipped with an 18.1-megapixel full-frame 24mm x 36mm Canon CMOS sensor, the camera records 8-bit 4:2:2 Motion JPEG 4K video to the camera’s CF memory card at 24 frames-per-second (fps) or Full HD 1920 x 1080 video at selectable frame rates from 24p to 60p, making it possible for next-generation visual expression with even higher image-quality and resolution performance.

“The Canon EOS-1D C digital SLR camera was designed in response to the needs of filmmakers, television producers, and other high-level motion-imaging professionals,” stated Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “Not only does it combine 4K and Full HD video capture with a convenient design, its use of dual CF cards also offers an efficient workflow compatible with today’s post-production requirements.”

    Creative Control
The Canon EOS-1D C digital SLR camera incorporates Canon Log Gamma to enable the recording of high-quality video with rich gradation expression, making possible the type of impressive image quality required in motion pictures by maximizing both highlight and shadow detail retention while also providing a high level of color-grading freedom. The EOS-1D C’s full-frame 24 x 36mm 18.1-megapixel Canon CMOS sensor makes possible a wide range of creative imaging expression, such as image-blur effects. Additional features include an expanded sensitivity range of up to ISO 25600 for exceptional motion-imaging results with reduced noise even in low-light settings. The camera’s ability to record 8-bit 4:2:2 4K and 8-bit 4:2:0 Full HD video to CF cards eliminates the need for an external recorder and enables workflows with increased mobility. If desired, however, captured video (excluding 4K video) can be output from the camera’s HDMI terminal to an external recorder using an uncompressed YCbCr 8-bit 4:2:2 signal.

4K video is captured by an approximately APS-H-sized portion of the full image sensor, while Full HD video can be captured in the user’s choice of two different imaging formats:

The standard Full HD setting captures the full 36mm width of the CMOS sensor to achieve the largest possible angle of view for any compatible lens.

An optional Super 35 crop setting enables cinematographers to match the industry-standard imaging format and angle of view achieved by traditional motion picture cameras. This enables video footage from the EOS-1D C camera to more closely match the look of footage from other cameras in multi-camera shooting environments.

Other useful video-related features on the EOS-1D C DSLR include a built-in headphone jack for real-time audio monitoring, and the ability to view the camera’s LCD even when the HDMI port is connected to an external monitor. The EOS-1D C camera uses the same LP-E4N battery pack as the EOS-1D X, and it can also be powered by an optional AC Adapter Kit.

The EOS-1D C camera ships with Canon software applications including EOS Utility, which enables various camera settings to be adjusted from a PC, and Picture Style Editor. These two personal computer applications enable users to view the camera’s live output on an external monitor1 and adjust the image in real-time to maximize shooting and post-production efficiencies. The software also ensures no loss of quality for 4K/Motion JPEG and full HD/60p video displayed on the external monitor, and it enables video shot with Canon Log Gamma to be output on the monitor with video gamma applied.

    Versatility and Value
The Canon EOS-1D C camera can be used to capture still images with more than 60 interchangeable Canon EF and EF Cinema Lenses, all of which are designed to deliver exceptional image quality to maximize the potential for creative visual expression. The compact size and lightweight design of the camera make it easy to carry so it is highly mobile for convenient shooting inside automobiles and other confined spaces. Its compact size also enables peripheral equipment such as rails and cranes to be more compact, which can facilitate smoother handling and reduced costs on-set. The camera’s low-light capabilities can also help to minimize lighting costs and increase versatility for lighting. For added usability, record start/stop can be remotely controlled by EOS Utility Software via an optional Canon WFT-E6A Wireless File Transmitter.

Realizing the same exceptional still-image performance as the recently introduced Canon EOS-1D X digital SLR camera, the camera provides a sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200 for outstanding still-image results with reduced noise, even in dimly lit settings. Incorporating high-performance Canon Dual DIGIC 5+ image processors, the EOS-1D C delivers high-precision AF and AE performance while also enabling high-speed continuous shooting of up to approximately 12 fps. In the ultra-fast continuous shooting mode, the EOS-1D C provides a continuous shooting speed of up to approximately 14 fps (mirror remains raised during shooting; JPEG images only).

The Canon EOS-1D C digital SLR camera is scheduled to be available within 2012 at a suggested retail price of $15,000.

    • Nikon Flash - SB-900, SB-800, SB-700, SB-600, SB-400
    • Sony Flash - HVL-F56AM, HVL-F42AM, HVL-MT24AM, HVL-RLAM

NOTE: The cable reviewed is for Nikon.

Quality/Usability : If you use or plan on using a flash bracket, it's best to purchase a flash cord. However, OEM accessories usually tend to be a bit expensive. Certain 3rd party manufacturers are reputable and make OEM quality products and Pixel is one of them.

PIXEL's Flashgun Cable's are about 1/3 the price of the OEM cables but how well do they work and how is the quality?

The quality of the cable is very sturdy and well constructed. On one end of the cable, the top has PIXEL's logo and cable model number printed. The underside has a metal plate that slides into the hotshoe of your camera. The other end of the cable connects either to a flash stand or mount such as a flash bracket and a slot for you to slide your flash into place.

The images above show the flash connected to the hotshoe on the cord and on the camera. Both slide in smoothly and perfectly. To lock the flash into the hotshoe of the cord, you will use the locking mechanism on the flash itself as if you were to lock it in place on the camera. For the camera, the PIXEL flashgun cable uses a knob locking mechanism. Simply turn clockwise to lock it in place and counter-clockwise to loosen. At time, it would be a little hard to loosen as it didn't provide enough grip.

Review: PIXEL Flashgun Cable for Nikon Canon Sony DSLR Camera Review: PIXEL Flashgun Cable for Nikon Canon Sony DSLR Camera

The image below is how it is connected to the camera and flash bracket. I opted for a shorter cable so it did not get in the way. Depending on your situation, you may need a longer cable but if you're using it on a flash bracket or near each other, the shorter length would be enough. And since its a coiled cord, it can stretch.

Review: PIXEL Flashgun Cable for Nikon Canon Sony DSLR Camera

With a flash mounted on the cable, the flash was sturdy and did not wobble. I've seen some cheap aftermarket cables caused the flash to wobble even when its been locked in place. Since it wobbled, it would cause the flash to go off prematurely since it constantly touched the contacts causing a short. I had none of these problems with the PIXEL.

Conclusion : Overall, the PIXEL Flashgun Cable for Nikon Canon Sony DSLR Camera worked great. PIXEL makes quality products. It comes in two different lengths; 1.8M and 3.6M. There was no wobble with the flash when mounted onto the hotshoe of the cable. The price is very affordable unlike the OEM brand. Since I don't use flash brackets often, no need to spend $60+ on cable.

Press Release: Canon Announces EOS 60Da for Astrophotography

Today, Canon has announced a new camera...the 60Da! This is the successor to the EOS 20Da that is mainly used for astrophotography. This caters to astronomers and doesn't seem like a successor to the Canon EOS 60D.

You can place your preorder with B&H Photo and Adorama for $1499.
NEW CANON EOS 60Da DSLR CAMERA FOR ASTRONOMY ENTHUSIASTS CAPTURES THE TRUE COLORS OF THE COSMOS

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., April 3, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today introduced the EOS 60Da Digital SLR Camera, a long-awaited successor to the EOS 20Da that is optimized for astrophotography. This DSLR caters to astronomers and hobbyists who enjoy capturing the beauty of the night sky by offering a modified infrared filter and a low-noise sensor with heightened hydrogen-alpha sensitivity. These modifications allow the camera to capture magnificent photographs of “red hydrogen emission” nebulae and other cosmic phenomena.

“The EOS 60Da is a testament to the constant desire to meet the needs of every customer, including those in specialized fields,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A., “This new camera enables an accurate depiction of a part of our solar system which is hard to achieve with conventional cameras but should be enjoyed and celebrated.”

The Canon EOS 60Da camera packs a powerful 18-megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-C) that produces sharp and high-contrast images of astronomical objects, a major enhancement over the EOS 20Da model’s 8.2-megapixel sensor. The improved infrared-blocking filter is a modification suited specifically toward astronomy enthusiasts to achieve a hydrogen-alpha light sensitivity that is approximately three times higher than that of a normal Canon DSLR camera. This produces a 20-percent higher transmittance of Hydrogen Alpha line, or Hα wavelength, allowing astronomers to capture crisp, clear images of reddish, diffuse nebulae.

    Enhanced Features
Crisp images of the stars and planets can be viewed on the EOS 60Da’s improved 3.0-inch Clear View LCD screen with 1,040,000 dots for detailed focusing. The flip-out Vari-angle screen allows photographers to adjust the screen for easy viewing without straining even while the camera is mounted to a telescope via a third-party T-ring adapter. Optimized for stargazing with friends or in an educational setting, astronomy enthusiasts can connect the camera to a TV with the provided AVC-DC400ST Stereo AV Video Cable and display the night sky on a TV monitor using the camera’s Live View mode. Moreover, the EOS 60Da’s Live View mode is equipped with a Silent Shooting feature that eliminates shutter-induced vibration for maximum camera stability when the camera is mounted to a telescope or super-telephoto EF lens.

Enhanced noise reduction on the EOS 60Da sensor offers photographers the ability to experiment with the wide array of ISO settings and increased ISO speeds up to 6400 expandable to 12800. Other features include an intelligent nine-point autofocus system, full manual controls, and RAW, JPEG, and RAW+JPEG image recording capabilities.

    Accessories
The EOS 60Da helps capture the wonders of the night sky with its use of Canon’s award-winning EF and EF-S lenses along with other EOS accessories. Additionally, the EOS 60Da is packaged with Canon’s RA-E3 Remote Controller Adapter, providing the ability to connect a Canon Timer Remote Control such as the TC-80N3 (optional accessory). The TC-80N3 is ideal for controlling time exposures longer than 30 seconds as well as capturing a series of consecutive time exposures that can be composited during post-processing for improved image quality. This is especially useful when the camera body is connected to a telescope[i] or an EF super telephoto lens.

Canon has also included an AC adapter kit with the EOS 60Da, allowing the camera to be powered through an AC wall outlet or a battery-powered inverter, ideal for long exposure image or video capture at home or in the field.

    Availability
As a specialized product, the EOS 60Da is only available to order from select authorized dealers. The estimated retail price is $1,499.00 and it is expected to be available this month.
