Review: SFBags Waterfield Designs Tablet Ultimate SleeveCase

Overview : Ultimate Tablet Sleeve Protection. Safeguard your tablet with a properly fitted SleeveCase. Cushioned with high-grade neoprene and wrapped in a nearly indestructible ballistic nylon shell, the Tablet SleeveCase functions as a stylish stand-alone case or can be inserted into another bag. And no need to take your tablet out of its snug compartment when going through airport security—it's TSA Checkpoint Friendly. With its impact-resistant screen protecting insert and its scratch-free, screen cleaning Ultrasuede® lining, you're good to go. It's a slam dunk.

Features :
  • Made of indestructible ballistic nylon shell
  • Stand-alone case or inserted inserted into another bag
  • Impact-resistant screen protecting insert
  • Ultrasuede neoprene interior lining
  • TSA checkpoint friendly

Quality/Usability : For photographers, we need a way to show our portfolio to clients. Some still carry around a binder with printed images while others are going more towards the high-tech route and using tablets to show their work.

As we transport our tablets or laptops to every location, we need a way to not only transport them but to make sure they don't get damaged. We do want to keep our devices as immaculate as possible so that it's presentable and not beat up. How you treat you items can also represent how well you maintain other items.

Since I purchased an ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity, I needed a way to carry my tablet around. I do have a leather case but there's no strap or handle. I would have to carry it around like a textbook thus occupying my hand. I wanted to see how the Waterfield Designs Ultimate Tablet SleeveCase would protect and hold my tablet.

The Ultimate Tablet SleeveCase is made of ballistic nylon shell that will help protect your screen from impacts to the front. It comes only in black. The flap has velcro on it to help close the flap and to prevent the tablet from falling out. The backside has a sleeve pocket that is big enough to hold cables, notepad or magazine sticking out (vertical).

It's available in two trim styles: lead indium and leather trim. The lead indium has a silver and black checker board look to it. The leather trim is just that, leather and costs an additional $6. The strap that is at the bottom of the sleevecase has a purpose. When you're pulling out the tablet, rather than holding the case, you would have one hand on the device and the other on the strap. This will allow you to pull the case away. You can also carry the case from this end but it is not recommended.

The flap cover is lined with Ultrasuede lining and is held closed with velcro.

The interior is made of neoprene liner that helps protect the screen from impacts. Also on the inside is a Ultrasuede lining that cleans the screen when you insert and remove the tablet every time. It won't remove everything but small particles like dust or crumbs. It's a perfect fit for the tablet. The Ultimate Sleeve Case are designed for tablets only with no accessories such as cases or covers installed. I personally like cases on my electronic devices to give it that extra protection.

If you want to add D-rings to the case, it would be an additional $5. The D-rings allows you to attach a shoulder strap if you ever need one. For $12, you get a Simple Strap Mini for the case and for $22, you get the Suspension Strap Mini (pictured above). If you have your own strap, you can use that instead of buying their own. Both the D-ring and strap are are well made and sturdy.

The Ultimate Tablet Sleeve is available for the Google Nexus, ASUS Transformers, Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Nobles Nook, Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Blackberry Playbook, Microsoft Surface, Motorola Xoom, Acer Iconia Tab and many more! If you're unsure of the size, Waterfield Designs has great customer service.

Conclusion : Overall, the SFBags Waterfield Designs Tablet Ultimate SleeveCase is a perfect fit for your tablet. It protects your tablet and makes transporting it easier and more professional looking. The quality is top-notch and well made.

Review: Carry Speed MoGoPod v2.0 Monopod Stabilizer

Review: Carry Speed MoGoPod Monopod Stabilizer

Overview : The new Carry Speed MoGoPod v2.0 is a unqiue monopod stabilizer that can be used Right Side Up, or Upside Down! It's unique internal steel belt drive system adjusts the MoGoPod quickly to automatically telescope the MoGoPod to any height, and locks down with a simple twist lock.

Features :
  • Non-slip Grip
  • Simple Twist Lock
  • Rubber Foot
  • Can be used Right Side Up, or Upside Down
  • Unique internal steel belt drive system adjusts the MogoPod quickly to automatically telescope the Mogopod to any height, and locks down with a simple twist lock
  • Markings on the Carry Speed MoGoPod allow you to remember your favorite settings, and the foamed handle provides a non-slip grip and comfortable handling
  • The top of the MoGoPod platform can accept standard ⅜-16 inch or ¼-20 inch mount and includes a set screw to lock your video head down
  • Unfolded Length: 165cm
  • Folded Length: 77cm
  • Loading: 3.5kg
  • Weight: 1.11kg

Quality/Usability : This review is based on MoGoPod v1 (prototype) with an upgrade kit installed to make it function like the MoGoPod v2. Function and design are both the same.

The prototype version had screws that were not removable. If you removed the rubber foot, the screw was attached to the rubber foot rather than to the monopod. The screw mount at the top was not removable. It was pretty much backwards but still worked...if you owned a GoPro.

Other than that, all functions and features are the same on the retail version of the MoGoPod v2.0.

The top of the MoGopod v2.0 platform can accept standard ⅜-16 inch or ¼-20 mount and includes a set screw to lock your video head down.

Markings on the Carry Speed MoGoPod v2.0 allow you to remember your favorite settings. NOTE: MoGoPod v2 has the markings in the middle and not at the bottom.

The MoGoPod v2.0 is also the only Monopod that allows you to use it upside down. Remove the rubber foot to reveal a ¼-20 threaded stud, and re-locate the rubber foot at the top stage. Now the MoGoPod v2.0 is the perfect quick telescoping pole allowing you new perspectives with your small cameras. The foam padded handle provides a non-slip grip and comfortable handling.

The uniqueness of the MoGoPod is the twist lock. Simply twist and pull the MoGoPod to extend and twist back to lock it in place (as shown in video below). If you don't tighten the twist enough, the MoGoPod can retract if there is enough weight or force pushing it down.

The MoGoPod v2.0 can also be upgraded with various accessories, such as their tripod foot with swiveling base. Carry Speed said that they will be announcing even more accessories to extend the functionality of the MoGoPod.

Above is the picture of the upgrade kit. If you happen to purchase the MoGoPod and ended up getting the prototype version, you can contact Carry Speed at carryspeed@gmail.com. You get a new rubber foot, base and ⅜-¼ screw. My only complaint about the upgrade kit is that if you keep screwing the ⅜-¼ screw to the new plate, it will keep spinning and eventually go through. There's no stopping point. If you tighten your ball head a little too tight, it's impossible to remove the screw from the ball head with your bare hands. You'll need pliers to help remove it. On the retail MoGoPod v2, the screw has a nut in the middle and an indent on the plate to prevent this. Other than that, it definitely converted the prototype (v1) into v2.0.

Conclusion : Overall, the Carry Speed MoGoPod v2.0 Monopod Stabilizer does a decent job. It would of been nice if they added a wrist strap to monopod. Sometimes, if you don't tighten the twist lock enough, the mogopod can slide down on you. The MSRP is $150.00, which is a bit pricey but it can be purchased for around $80.

You may see the same MoGoPod offered by a company called iFootage. It's the exact same thing as the Carry Speed version with the exception of "iFootage" logo placed on the foam handle. I was told by Carry Speed that the iFootage version is an exact copycat/clone.

Kickstarter: The Supraflux Video Camera Stabilizer

If you've been following our site, we post great new ideas from entrepreneurs on Kickstarter so they raise funds to get their project off the ground. Kickstarter has helped companies such as Custom SLR and many others kickstart their business.

One of the newest products to hit Kickstarter is the Supraflux Camera Stabilizer from the creators of the 2010 Kickstarter Picosteady campaign. The people at Supraflux, are looking to tackle a camera stabilizer for full sized cameras.

The goal for the project is to raise $27,900 to pay for getting the first order of parts machined, assembled and shipped out. The new stabilizer will retail for around $795, but if you support the project with a pledge of $595 you can get your stabilizer for $150 off. The first 100 backers of $495 or more will get a early bird special of $250 off retail price.

It received 80% of it's funding the day the Kickstarter campaign started. Within a day, the project is fully funded with over 40 days left.

If you're interested in the Supraflux or just want to help out, take a look at their Kickstarter page.

Continue reading for more information about the Supraflux Camera Stabilizer.

If you shoot video, you probably know that you need a stabilizer to get professional-looking footage that is smooth and stable. A stabilizer allows you to get that gliding camera effect, and ensures you don't get shaky amateur-looking footage that gives viewers a headache.

Unfortunately, most stabilizers require a lot of experience to operate properly.

Direction changes and panning are some of the biggest challenges when shooting with a stabilizer. The goal of a stabilizer is to keep the camera steady by absorbing your movements. So when it comes to turns, this effect actually keeps the camera from turning with you. When you want the camera to turn, you have to use your fingers to change the stabilizer's direction; thereby destabilizing the camera. It takes lots of practice to get stable direction changes using this method and even then, sometimes you ruin an otherwise great shot. Until now.

A revolutionary new way to film: The Brake

We set out to design a device that allows you to turn the camera without upsetting its balance. The result is the Supraflux Stabilizer with The Brake (patent pending). The Brake gives you complete control of turns by locking one axis of the stabilizer at the touch of a button. The other 2 axes remain free-floating continuing to stabilize the camera.

The result is a completely seamless transition from free to locked and complete control of your camera. This means you can turn the camera exactly how you want, when you want<. No more touching the stabilizer and ruining the shot. This will change the way you film.

Super smooth footage

Thanks to precision-machined aviation-grade aluminum and virtually frictionless ball bearings on all rotating parts, the results are incredible stabilization and professional looking footage. The adjustable central bearing means the Supraflux stabilizer can be perfectly balanced in all directions as opposed to many stabilizers that will get out of balance when rotated.

Easy to setup and use

- Balancing the camera is made easy with the top stage micro-adjustment mechanisms in both directions. To move the camera, all you need to do is turn the adjustment knobs. One turn of the knob moves the stage by 0.03" (0.8mm). No more frustrating back and forth adjustment.

- You can precisely know when the camera is balanced by using the integrated bubble level on the bottom plate instead of looking at the shaft and trying to make it look straight.

- It's faster and easier to remove the camera with the slide-out camera mounting plate. No more losing the mounting bolts. Just loosen them and pull the mounting plate up.

- The non-slip rubber surface on the top stage keeps your camera secure and prevents it from shifting and destabilizing the balance.

- Changing the counterweights is easy with the slide-out weights. No need to remove the bolts, just loosen them and slide out to remove or slide in to add weight. You can even do it with the stabilizer standing up.

- Two different weight sizes allow you to precisely setup your stabilizer and give you options for the exact setup you want (more inertia, shorter compact setup, etc.)

- The multi-position bottom plate lets you fine tune the inertia of the setup so that it feels right for you and for the type of shot you're taking. Outer position for more stability, inner position for nimble direction changes.

- The telescopic tube allows for a very precise setup of the dynamic handling of the stabilizer. This means you can perfectly balance any camera weighing 0.25lbs (115g) to 10 lbs (4.5kg).

- We added graduation marks on the tube to be used as a reference when fine tuning the stabilizer. It is also a convenient way to remember your setup when changing cameras.

- We also made sure that standard setup and adjustments don't require any tools. No more screwdrivers to install your camera.

Compatible with a huge range of cameras

The Supraflux stabilizer will work with virtually all cameras ranging from 0.25 lbs to 10lbs. This means iPhones and smartphones, GoPro cameras, point-and-shoot cameras, microsystems or mirrorless cameras, smaller DSLR and big DSLR, the RED cameras, semi-pro and pro video cameras will work great (see FAQ below). This stabilizer is built to grow with you for years of use.

Light, compact, rugged and durable

The Supraflux stabilizer remains light (3.2 lbs without counterweights) thanks to its aluminum construction. With the telescopic tube collapsed, the stabilizer is less than 15" tall and dismantles easily to fit in a carrying case or bag.

The black anodization on the aluminum provides a tough finish to protect the surfaces from the elements and during transportation.

Canon U.S.A. Announces World’s Smallest And Lightest DSLR Camera

MELVILLE, N.Y., March 21, 2013
– Continuing the quest to deliver superb product innovations, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR* camera: the EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLR Camera. It features a newly developed 18.0-megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and high-performance DIGIC 5 Image Processor for exceptional image quality and speed. With its combination of lightweight size, ease of use and outstanding image quality, the EOS Rebel SL1 is perfect for users looking for the ideal camera to bring sightseeing on vacation or to capture the everyday.

“The EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLR Camera represents a new era in DSLR versatility: ultra-portable, full-featured DSLR cameras,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “The EOS Rebel SL1 combines the high speed, high image quality and expanded shooting range of a DSLR camera, with the easy and fun usability of a point-and-shoot camera.”

Advanced Image Quality in a Compact Body

As the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR, the new camera body is 4.6″ (w) x 3.57″ (h) x 2.74″ (d), and weighs only 14.36 oz.** In comparison, the EOS Rebel SL1 is approximately 25 percent smaller and 28 percent lighter than the EOS Rebel T4i digital camera.

The EOS Rebel SL1 features an 18 megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor that performs exceptionally well in both bright and dimly lit shooting environments with an ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to H: 25600) for photos and ISO-6400 (expandable to H: 12800) for video. Canon’s DIGIC 5 Image Processor technology allows for exceptional image quality and shooting speed up to four frames per second (fps).

The camera includes a new nine-point center cross-type autofocus (AF) system to help achieve fast, sharp focus. The new AF system also includes a new Hybrid CMOS AF II sensor, which provides a wider focus area when shooting photos or video in Live View mode, and a continuous AF speed that’s increased from previous EOS models.

To help capture video with ease, the EOS Rebel SL1 features Canon’s Movie Servo AF, which provides continuous AF tracking of moving subjects. When shooting video with one of Canon’s new STM lenses, such as the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM (available in the standard lens kit), Movie Servo AF takes advantage of the lens’ stepping motor for smooth and quiet continuous AF. The camera is capable of Full HD shooting in a number of recording sizes and frame rates, and enables easy manual control of exposure, focus and Live View features. The combination of Canon’s new Hybrid CMOS AF system II and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens is ideal for shooting video helping to ensure only the sounds of the scene are recorded.

Allowing for clear and easy viewing even in bright environments, the Touch Screen three inch Clear View LCD monitor II provides a rich and expansive display as well as providing intuitive touch panel operation. Two finger touch gestures (multi-touch) can be easily used for zooming or changing images, accessing menu and quick control settings, and activating focus point and shutter release while shooting.

Creativity at your Fingertips

The EOS Rebel SL1 encourages users to explore their creative side with a wide array of features for convenience and simple shooting. The EOS Rebel SL1 is equipped with Scene Intelligent Auto Mode, an advanced function that detects faces, colors, brightness, movement, contrast, distance and other factors and automatically adjusts and selects the exposure method needed. The results are photos with a wide dynamic range, ideal for users without advanced photography knowledge or experience.

Users can also access advanced imaging features like the new Effect Shot mode, which automatically creates two different shots, one with a selected creative filter and one without. In addition, Creative Filters and Background Blur Simulation can now be displayed in real time during Live View shooting. Editing photos is also a snap with the Rebel SL1′s in-camera editing and cropping functionality. This feature allows users to view and crop the image using the camera’s LCD touch screen and save the edited version as a separate file.

For those who would like to take beautiful photos with ease, the EOS Rebel SL1 offers a variety of scene modes to explore. New special scene modes include Kids, Food and Candlelight, giving users advanced presets to help ensure the best possible photos even under difficult shooting conditions.

Pricing and Availability

The new EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLR Camera is scheduled to be available in April for an estimated retail price of $649.99 for the body alone or $799.99 bundled with the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM kit lens.

Coupled with Canon’s new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, available in the standard kit lens bundle, the EOS Rebel T5i takes full advantage of the Stepping Motor (STM) technology, which allows the lens to smoothly and silently focus on the subject whether it is moving or standing still. When combined with the camera’s high-resolution Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II and intuitive touch controls, the EOS Rebel T5i stands as Canon’s most “consumer-friendly” DSLR.

“Built to make advanced photography creative and fun, the EOS Rebel T5i Digital SLR Camera gives users exceptional image quality and fast, intuitive operation along with creative functions to help advance photographic expression,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A.

Expand Your Creativity with New Advanced Features

The EOS Rebel T5i provides amateur and advanced photographers looking to hone their creative and technical skills with a range of features that allow for crisp, clear images.

Whether it is adding saturation to a vivid landscape or applying a unique, vintage touch to a portrait, users who want to express their creativity can experiment with different effects and settings, composing a shot, by using one of Canon’s seven Creative Filters. When the Creative Filters are applied in Live View, users can preview the filter on the vari-angle three inch LCD touch screen without having to shoot the image first. Effects such as ArtBold, Water Painting, Grainy Black and White, Soft Focus, Toy Camera, Fish-Eye and Miniature let users pick and choose how to best express their creative vision before or after the image is captured.

The EOS Rebel T5i features advanced shooting modes to take creative imaging even further. When using one of the advanced shooting modes such as Handheld Night Scene, HDR Backlight Control or Multi-Shot Noise Reduction, multiple images are taken and combined within the camera to help create the best quality image based off of the shots taken. Providing quick and easy accessibility, a new mode dial with Scene modes has been included, allowing users the flexibility to select the subject matter while the camera determines the optimal settings.

Enhanced EOS Full HD Movie Mode

The EOS Rebel T5i offers easy-to-use professional video capture. When users switch to EOS Full HD Movie mode, the EOS Rebel T5i offers the ability to shoot in 1080p Full HD video in a number of recording sizes and frame rates. With Canon’s Hybrid CMOS AF System and Movie Servo AF, the camera provides continuous AF for focus tracking of moving subjects by helping to reduce the camera’s need to “hunt”, resulting in a quick and smooth continuous AF. While shooting with one of Canon’s Stepping Motor (STM) lenses, such as the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, the camera will only capture the stereo sound of the scene being recorded. For added flexibility, the EOS Rebel T5i also features a built-in stereo microphone with manual audio level adjustment to enhance sound quality.

Expanded Lineup of STM Lenses

Canon is expanding the lineup of STM lenses by adding one new lens, which now gives users three choices that will allow for the capture of stunning images and video with the EOS Rebel T5i – the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM and the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens offers high magnification in a compact and lightweight EF-S standard zoom lens with an optical image stabilizer for up to four equivalent stops for shake correction. When paired with the Hybrid CMOS AF, it allows for smooth and quiet, continuous AF for photo and video capturing – making it the perfect combination for preserving those once in a lifetime moments.

Availability

The EOS Rebel T5i Digital SLR camera is scheduled to be available in April for an estimated retail price of $749.99 for the body alone; $899.99 bundled with an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens kit, and $1,099.00 with the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens kit.

The new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens also is also scheduled to be available separately in April at an estimated retail price of $249.99.

Review: XCM Max Connect MHL MicroUSB to HDMI Adapter Cable

Overview : Max Connect is a MicroUSB to HDMI MHL Adapter Improved Remote Control Protocol (RCP) that is compatible with Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Evo 3D, HTC Evo 4G Tablet, HTC Sensation 4G, Sprint Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy Nexus and many more.

Features :
  • MHL Adapter allows you to connect a MicroUSB (5 Pin) port to a HDMI (Type A) equipped device
  • Improved Remote Control Protocol (RCP) function to use with HDTV remote control to control videos on a mobile device
  • Designed for use with mobile devices featuring MHL technology. Make sure your phone is compatible before purchasing
  • Connect a MHL compatible device to an HDMI TV
  • Supports video resolutions up to 1080p and digital audio
  • Includes 50cm long cable and 170cm long HDMI cable for better control performance

Quality/Usability : With camera and video improving on mobile devices, people are starting to use it more and more especially if you don't have your camera on you. But it's hard to show your friends and family pictures on your phone's screen. There's only so many people that can hover over your phone display. So why not display it on your TV?

Rather than get the OEM Samsung MHL adapter, I opted to try a 3rd party device. XCM is well known in the video game accessories scene and I have reviewed many of their gaming accessories. The quality of their products are very well made for an aftermarket company. So I thought I would give their Max Connect MHL adapter a try.

The XCM Max Connect MHL Adapter doesn't come with much. You get the MHL adapter and it comes with an HDMI cable. The only thing you have to supply yourself is the device (smartphone or tablet) and microUSB charger/cable.

There isn't much to the MHL adapter. One end lets you plug in a HDMI cable. The other end has a wire with a microUSB cable and in the middle of the XCM Max Connect MHL adapter is a port for you to connect your microUSB charging cable into and to power the adapter.

I own a Samsung Galaxy S3 which is MHL compatible and the hardware is slightly different from other devices. The S3 uses 11-pin microUSB rather than the usual 5-pin (newer devices will soon be using 11-pin). Since the smartphone is an 11-pin, it will not work with the MHL adapters. In order for me to get the Max Connect to work with the Galaxy S3, I had to buy a 5-pin to 11-pin adapter. These adapters cost only $2-$3 depending where you purchase from (no need to get fancy with brand name as they all do the same thing). This allowed me to convert the MHL adapters 5-pin microUSB into a 11-pin microUSB so that it would work with the Galaxy S3.

Getting it all setup is fairly easy.
  1. Connect the HDMI cable into the MHL adapter and your TV.
  2. Connect the microUSB charging cable into the MHL adapter.
  3. Connect the other end of the microUSB charging cable to a power source (wall or laptop).
  4. Connect the MHL adapter into the microUSB port on your device. This is the same port that you would normally use to charge your device.
  5. Select the appropriate HDMI Port on your TV (consult your TV owner's manual).
  6. The TV screen will display what is on your phone.
NOTE: Please ensure that your device has MHL capabilities.

Since it is connected to a microUSB charging cable and power source, it will also charge your device. No need to worry about your phone running out of battery.

Here are some samples of what it would look like on your HDTV. The HDTV display is a 55" Samsung LED.

Phone Home Screen:

YouTube and Google Maps:

Video Player (The Walking Dead):

I can now watch videos on a bigger screen whether it's videos that I loaded to my phone or videos that I have recorded on my phone.

Picture Gallery:

If I have guest over, we no longer have to pass the phone around or huddle around a phone. We can now view all the images we want on a big screen and comfortably.

Web Browser (Google Chrome):

You really wouldn't want to view the web from your phone if you're home and have access to a tablet, laptop or desktop but this is just to show what you can do and how it would look.

Games (Candy Crush):

Yes, we can play our games on a bigger screen but we would still need to take a look at our phone so we can see where we're pressing. But it's cool though.

Pretty much whatever is displayed on your device is displayed on your TV. You can now watch videos, view pictures, browse the web and play games all on a bigger screen at resolutions of up to 1080p. The color and clarity of the output is very good. It also depends the quality of your HDTV and its settings. The refresh rate is pretty smooth as well. The pictures above doesn't do its justice.

Conclusion : Overall, the XCM Max Connect MHL MicroUSB to HDMI Adapter Cable displays whatever is on your device on to your TV. The Official Samsung MHL adapter with 5-pin to 11-pin adapter costs $40 retail without HDMI cable. Even if you have to go out and buy a 5-pin to 11-pin adapter, it's still cheaper. It may not cost much but I liked the fact that they included an HDMI cable. Also, make sure that your device is MHL compatible.

*UPDATE — 4/1/2013*
