Kickstarter: The Looky Loo Light

Every parent wants to capture those fleeting moments of their child's life before it's too late, but kids love to look at everything and sometimes everything except the camera! That's where The Looky Loo Light comes in.

The Looky Loo Light was created to provide photographers of all skill levels the ability to achieve the impossible; capture the attention of children during a photo shoot. The Looky Loo Light is a wireless attachment that adjusts to any size SLR camera lens and provides hands free action to attract the eyes of the little ones in your life.

Child photographer Allison Carenza, who sought to solve her own common issues shooting young children, created the idea. “For me it was a no-brainer. You really only have 20 good solid minutes to shoot kids at the younger ages. The Looky Loo Light has helped tremendously. Now I don’t stress about getting that special shot,” says Carenza.

The Looky Loo Light is the first professional grade electronic “distraction” tool on the market. Combining colorful moving lights and integrated sound, the Looky Loo Light is sure to be a hit with your clients or family. The LED lights are designed to be low-light with indoor/outdoor settings with 3 light patterns and 3 different sound programs.

The cheapest price you can get the Looky Loo for was $149 for Early Bird pricing but has since been sold out. You can still get the early pricing of $199 and $249 is the Standard Edition. If you have the money, you can pay $2,000 which includes a trip to Kansas City, a photo shoot with Allison Carenza, weekend session of mentoring for you and a guest and live tutorial of the Looky Loo Light (airfare not included but they will cover your hotel and food!).

Press Release: Nikon Releases Quick-Draw Strap and Quick-Draw Strap S by BlackRapid

TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the Quick-Draw Strap and the Quick-Draw Strap S, two new products developed in cooperation with world-renowned American camera accessory manufacturer, BlackRapid.

Overview
Product name: Quick-Draw Strap
Model number: AN-SBR2
Color: Black

Product name: Quick-Draw Strap S
Model number: AN-SBR3
Color: Black

The Quick-Draw Strap and Quick-Draw Strap S were developed based on quick-draw straps invented by photographer and BlackRapid founder, Ron Henry, and popular throughout the market for their incredible convenience. The straps have been further refined to offer even greater convenience.

Along with the great mobility offered by BlackRapid products through specifications that enable on-the-go shooting with a mechanism that allows the camera to slide diagonally up and down the shoulder strap, a system that utilizes the camera's tripod socket so that the camera hangs upside down for a smooth grip, a shoulder pad that effectively distributes weight for less burden, and an under-arm tether that holds the strap firmly in place, these two new straps offer an even greater sense of security with a safety strap that prevents the camera from falling in the unlikely event the fastener comes loose, and a cover that prevents the carabiner that connects the strap to the camera from scratching the camera body.

The Quick-Draw Strap, with a wider shoulder pad, is suited to use with digital SLR cameras. The Quick-Draw Strap S, with a narrower shoulder pad, is suited to use with Nikon 1 advanced cameras with interchangeable lenses and Nikon COOLPIX compact digital cameras.

No word on how much the Nikon branded sling straps will cost. But once we know how much, we will update this post along with links to where you can purchase.

New .photography Domain Names for Photographers - 35% Off Discount

Recently, the ICANN (or Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) the organization responsible for the internet domain names (.com, .org, .net etc.) has released a full list of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) including several ones which are especially interesting for photographers and people in the photography industry.

The new domains include:

.photography
.gallery
.graphics
.equipment
.camera
.lighting

*If you're trying to get one with a manufacturers name such as Canon, Nikon, Sony and other companies, they've all been probably snatched up by their respective companies.

If you currently have one called JoeSmithPhotography.com, it can be a little long. But what if you can get one that is JoeSmith.photography?

Like with all domain names, its first come first serve. Typically good domains or popular ones are grabbed early, especially if you have a common name. So if you're thinking about getting one, do so as soon as possible. There may be plans to also release .photo and .photos which will make your link even more short but it's just a matter of when.

There are a few advantages and disadvantages to using the new photography domains over more conventional domains (such as .com or .net):

Advantages:
  • Domain name is an asset and investment - It can increase in value over time and if you invest in it, such as creating a website which brings in readers and revenue.
  • Domain names related to photography combined with a strong name can improve your SEO results for that name.
  • Using .photography is a great professional way of reaching out to your clients.
  • Web URL is shorter.
When there are advantages, there are disadvantages as well but as the internet gets more accustomed to these new domains, the disadvantages will be eliminated:

Disadvantages:
  • Search engines still prefer existing domain names (such as .com .org .net etc.) - This will be expanded as the months passes and the internet gets accustomed to the new domains.
  • It may take a while for the new domain to catch on - Some people might not even understand that the .photography link you're providing is an actual link and may still put the usual domain names as mentioned above.
** 32% DISCOUNT AT GODADDY.COM **

If you're interested in purchasing a .photography or any of the new domains, we have a 32% off discount for you through GoDaddy. The deal will give you a 32% off the price of the domain so instead of $25 for a .photography domain you will only pay $17 a year. The more expensive .camera will be around $27 instead of $40.

All you need to do to get the discount is go to this link: GoDaddy 32% discount link (discount will already be calculated automatically).

Don't forget, all the domains with popular manufacturers name such as Canon, Nikon, Sony and other companies, they've all been probably snatched up by their respective companies.

And don't forget to sign up and use Mr. Rebates and get back 8% cashback (up to $13.74).

*UPDATE* - 2/20/2014

There is now a 35% off coupon - WOWcjc295d. *Cashback will not apply with this coupon.

Potential Nikon D600 Class Action Lawsuit

US law firm Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein is currently collecting Nikon D600 dust complaints for a potential class action lawsuit against Nikon. This is great for Nikon D600 owners but there's been reports of Nikon D600's being replaced with Nikon D610's. If it is indeed true, this lawsuit won't happen because Nikon is trying to rectify the situation by replacing the cameras.

*UPDATE*
The law firm Zimmerman & Reed PLLP, filed a class action lawsuit in California federal court on February 19, 2014.

Press Release: Panasonic Announces 4K-Capable Lumix DMC-GH4

Panasonic has announced today its latest flagship Micro Four Thirds camera, the Lumix DMC-GH4. It's designed as a 'hybrid camera' that can shoot both stills and videos, and the emphasis of the improvements is clearly on the latter. Its revised 16MP Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine IX processor allow for 4K video, 12 fps continuous shooting and 1080p shooting at bitrates as high as 200Mbps.

The GH4 uses a new 'Depth from Defocus' autofocus system which offers focus times as quick as 0.07 sec and less hunting, according to the company. You can compose photos and videos on either a 3" 1.04M dot fully articulating OLED display or an OLED EVF with over 2 million dots. The GH4 also includes Wi-Fi with NFC, as PC sync port, highlight and shadow control, and a 'silent mode' which uses the electronic shutter only.

The big story about the GH4 is it's video recording capabilities, which can record at 4K and 1080p, with support for the IPB and ALL-Intra codecs. Shooting aids include focus peaking, zebra pattern, luminance level adjustment, and cinema gamma presets. An optional 'interface unit' adds five SDI and two XLR terminals, and permits 10-bit 4:2:2 output with time code.

No word on pricing and availability but it will be announced at a future date.

You can pre-order from these following authorized retailers:
