Review: Camtrol TROL 4.2 Inch Camera Articulating Arm with Miniclamp

Overview : Camtrol allows versatility with the addition of TROL: a 4.2” camera articulating arm with miniclamp. Easylink connectors for attaching: monitors, remotes, lights, clamps and accessories.

Features :
  • Connect monitors, remotes, lights and other accessories

Quality/Usability : Articulating arms allows you to attach monitors, remotes, lights, digital audio recording devices and other accessories. If you're doing video, the hot shoe mount on top of the camera will not be enough especially if you need to mount a combination of LCD monitor, LED light and microphone.

The Camtrol TROL is a 4.2 inch articulating arm with miniclamp. It comes with the articulating arm, miniclamp, thumbscrew and cold shoe adapter. The one I received has a F&V logo on it. It also has a handle rather than a knob that is shown on Camtrol's website.

There are three jointed arms that offers a wide range of motion. A single-point lock handle allows you to easily secure the position of the arm in place.

This arm can be mounted either on top of a camera in a standard cold shoe adapter or the cold shoe adapter can be removed revealing a 1/4"-20 male thread.

The mini clamp looks like the Manfrotto Nano Clamp but there is no markings of it being Manfrotto. However, it does a good job of clamping onto the receiver post on the Camtrol Prime 22 or Camtrol Sniper 1080 KS.

Conclusion : Overall, the Camtrol TROL 4.2 Inch Camera Articulating Arm with Miniclamp holds up very well to whatever accessory you may put onto the TROL. No cheap parts so you don't have to worry about it breaking on you. You can also use the TROL on other poles if needed which makes it versatile if needed.

Kickstarter: BounceLite - The Revolutionary Flash Diffuser

We typically get pitches about new products and to help promote it. Some catch our attention and some are eh. But for those that do catch our attention, we post. One Kickstarter campaign that caught our attention is a new flash diffuser called BounceLite from Fotocapio. This looks promising and looks to combine both a flash card, gel filter kit and softbox in one.

Take a look at the video below:

Prices are in British Pounds but Early Bird offer starts at £80 which is approximately $136 USD. If you miss out on it, it jumps to £88 ($149 USD). There's a £12 ($20 USD) shipping for outside the UK unless you get in on the Early Bird which offers FREE shipping.

For more information about the BounceLite, continue reading or go to the Kickstarter campaign. We'll have a full review of the BounceLite when we get our review units in the mail.

Review: Camtrol Sniper 1080 KS POV Camera Rig

Overview : The Camtrol Sniper 1080 KS is the “go-to” POV rig for shooting action-sports, athletes, documentary film makers and video professionals alike. When you want to capture moving first-person shots, a POV rig is essential, and when it comes to POV rigs, the Sniper 1080 KS is in a class of its own.

Features :
  • Net Weight : 1lb 11oz
  • Collapsed size : 10 1/4″L x 4 3/4″ w x 2 1/4″ T
  • 19 3/4″ full extended L
  • Anatomical hollow handle for concealing wired accessories
  • 1080 degrees of angles
  • Universal 1/4″20 mount
  • 3.5lb weight capacity for camera, lenses, and accessories
  • Remote mounting post for lights, mics, and monitors.

Quality/Usability : For you more active videographers who are constantly on the move or need to get shots from multiple angles and still be a stabilizer, the Camtrol Sniper 1080 KS offers a variety of angles and is perfect for first-person perspective shots.

The Camtrol Sniper 1080 KS is small and compact. In addition to the Sniper 1080 KS, a quick release plate and rubber cap is included. The Sniper 1080 KS is an all-aluminum platform with a three-part articulating arm and has a maximum load of 3.5 lbs.

The base of the Sniper 1080 KS is a mounting bracket with a quick release plate. The mounting bracket and quick release plate has a safety feature that prevents the plate from accidentally sliding out. To release the plate, you either have to loosen the mounting bracket knob all the way and lift the plate out or loosen the mounting bracket knob slightly, press the safety mechanism and slide the plate out.

Due to the articulating arms, it can be folded down into a relatively flat package that can be put into your camera bag or case.

There is also a slot to attach a wrist or hand straps to the plate.

The articulating arm has knobs to lock the position of the ball joints in place. The upper-arm segment is a comfortable handle with a receiver post to attach additional Camtrol accessories (accessories below). Thanks to the articulating ball joints, you can customize and configure it to how you want it.

You can configure it to let you do selfies, low/high angled shots, POV shots and many more.

I've used the Sniper 1080 KS with a GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition as well as a Canon PowerShot G1X Mark II and both worked great. There are so many configurations that you can set the Sniper 1080 articulating arms. The Sniper 1080 supported the cameras very well and the articulating arms did not move. I do however check the knobs every so often just to make sure it's tightened.

These are a few other Camtrol products that you can purchase and attach to the Prime:

The Remote Mounting Plate ($29) is a 90° camera mounting bracket made of black anodized aluminum. It includes a Velcro pad so you can mount remote controls or accessories the way you like them.

The remote mounting plate mounts to the end of the handle on the Prime 22, or Sniper 1080 KS. You can then attach the Camtroller, other LANC / infra-red remotes, GoPro remote or other camera accessories for quick access. It allows the shooter, via his remote, to use his thumb to operate his HDSLR, camcorder, or POV action camera.

I'm not the type of person that likes to stick anything to my accessories in the event that I upgrade, replace or swap gear.

Camtrol allows versatility with the addition of TROL ($139): a 4.2” camera articulating arm with miniclamp. Easylink connectors for attaching: monitors, remotes, lights, clamps and accessories.

You can also connect your iPhone 4 to the miniclamp by using Camtrol's X-Shot case ($35). The X-Shot is a two-piece snap on case that features removable tripod adapters, which allow you to mount your iPhone to a tripod, or to the Camtrol rig, in either landscape or portrait orientations. Also included with the X-Shot is a mini flex tripod but my review unit did not. This will allow you to film a live feed straight to your iPhone.

Conclusion : Overall, the Camtrol Sniper 1080 KS POV Camera Rig is very versatile. It's compact, lightweight and configurable. If you do video with a GoPro or smaller camera, you'll definitely want to take a look at the Sniper 1080 KS. The articulating arms and knobs are strong and durable enough to hold the weight of your gear.
