Press Release: DJI Revolutionizes Personal Flight With New Mavic Pro Drone

It was only last week that GoPro announced their foldable Karma drone and now DJI has stolen some thunder from GoPro and announced their own foldable drone called Mavic Pro. It can easily fit in a backpack or a large purse. The arms and propellers tuck into the Mavic. So no more having to remove the propellers. Essentially, its a Phantom 4 in a foldable form factor and a few more features.

Mavic Pro promises an encrypted 4.3-mile range, with support for 1080p streaming to an attached smartphone. So you can stream to Facebook Live, Periscope and YouTube via the DJI companion app in the same way Phantom-series drones do.

Here are some of the Mavic Pro’s main specs:
  • Flight time: Up to 27 minutes
  • Range: 7km (4.3 miles) with controller
  • Camera specs: 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 96fps, 12Mp photos in RAW or JPG
  • Max speed: 40mph
  • Stable flight in winds up to 24mph
  • Obstacle avoidance: up to 22mph
  • Weight: 743g

The newly designed controller can be used on its own, or has fold-out arms which hold a smartphone. The controller’s screen shows key flight stats such as altitude, distance and remaining battery life. It has dedicated buttons for return-to-home and a pause button to stop the drone while it’s flying in its automatic modes. On the right-hand side is a switch for quickly flipping to Sport mode.

The Mavic Pro will go on sale in mid-October for the price of $999 Mavic Pro with controller or $749 without controller and you use your phone via WiFi to control the drone.

You can place your preorder at:

Small Size And Folding Design Make Mavic Pro Perfect For Wherever You Go

NEW YORK, Sept. 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- DJI, the world leader in unmanned aerial technology, Tuesday revolutionized personal flight by introducing Mavic Pro - a portable, powerful and easy-to-use drone featuring DJI's most innovative flight technology in a sleek, foldable package that enables creative fun wherever you go.

Mavic Pro is DJI's first personal drone designed to be taken just about anywhere. Small enough to toss in a bag and easy enough to launch quickly whenever the time and place are right, its unique folding design compresses the entire drone to practically the size of a water bottle.

The compact body of Mavic Pro holds a drone built for uncompromising performance. Equipped with a stabilized 4K camera and a visual navigation system, with a 4.3 mile (7 km) range and 27 minute flight time, Mavic Pro sets the new standard for compact drones.

"DJI has spent a decade making it easier for anyone to fly, and by rethinking everything about how a drones look, we have created an entirely new type of aerial platform for anyone to explore their creativity," said Frank Wang, DJI's CEO and founder.

"Mavic Pro is a technological triumph filled with features that once again show how DJI leads the industry. Most importantly, Mavic Pro allows you to reach the skies easily, see the world with new eyes and tell your stories like never before."

Mavic Pro is designed to be ultra portable and quick to launch so it can take to the skies as soon as you need it. With four folding arms and propellers that tuck neatly away against its streamlined body, it can be easily carried in a purse or backpack, saving you the trouble of mounting propellers before a flight. It can be operated by the powerful long range remote controller, or simply by your smartphone at shorter range. When controlled by a smartphone, the whole system can be set up and airborne in less than a minute to capture every key moment.

Unparalleled Flight Experience

DJI's commitment to unparalleled stability, maneuverability and safety is clear in Mavic Pro's new FlightAutonomy system. FlightAutonomy is Mavic Pro's brain and nervous system, a complex network of hardware and software consisting of five cameras, GPS and GLONASS navigation systems, a pair of ultrasonic range finders, redundant sensors and 24 powerful computing cores.

FlightAutonomy can position, navigate and plan routes for Mavic Pro, enabling it to avoid obstacles in various environments, with or without the help of satellite signals. FlightAutonomy provides a significant boost in working range and can cope with complex 3D environments. For navigation and obstacle avoidance, FlightAutonomy provides a superb speed-range envelope to make Mavic Pro self-navigational in various intelligent flight modes, and will avoid most obstacles at speeds up to 22 mph (36 kph).

An ultra light and aerodynamic airframe, together with DJI's state-of-the-art propulsion and battery system, enables Mavic Pro to fly for up to 27 minutes. To experience the pure joy of flying, Mavic Pro can be switched to Sport Mode, which allows speeds of up to 40 mph (64.8 kph), increasing the drone's agility and responsiveness. Mavic Pro flies smoothly and will remain stable in winds of up to 24 mph (38.5 kph), and uses DJI's GEO geofencing system to help identify restricted areas, preventing flight in locations that might raise safety or security concerns automatically, and helping pilots make smarter decisions about when and where to fly.

As with all DJI drones, Mavic Pro is set to automatically return to its launch location if it ever loses contact with the controller or reaches critically low battery levels. The new Precision Landing feature records a burst of video with two stereo cameras every time Mavic Pro launches, then uses both video and satellite information when it returns to land within an inch of where it took off. If a pilot lets go of the controls, the drone will simply hover in place.

Advanced Stabilized Camera System

Mavic Pro's small size is packed with powerful features. DJI's advanced technology now includes our smallest-ever three-axis gimbal for shake-free photos and video. The autofocus camera features a minimum focusing distance of just 19 in (0.5 m) and can be flipped 90 degrees to portrait mode for vertical selfies and video. Mavic Pro records 4K video at 30fps and full 1080p HD at 96fps. Its 12-megapixel camera with Adobe DNG RAW support has been expertly tuned for aerial images. With the help of the high-precision gimbal, you can confidently shoot 2-second-long exposures in the air to get the most jaw-dropping aerial images.

New Remote and Live View Performance

A revolutionary new compact remote controller has been designed to provide a fully ergonomic experience with optimum comfort, and can accommodate a smartphone or control Mavic Pro on its own. Its built-in LCD screen displays essential telemetry data, while dedicated buttons for functions such as Return-to-Home and pausing during Intelligent Flight modes ensure a confident flight every single time. The video link system, OcuSync, represents new heights in DJI's communication technology. It supports a range up to 4.3 miles (7 km) and live view resolutions up to 1080p.

The new band management algorithm makes OcuSync more robust in environments with many frequencies in operation. Mavic Pro is equipped with dual-band WiFi as a secondary link, allowing easy control via your smartphone for close range operation or for quick downloading of content from Mavic Pro straight to your device.

Most Intelligent Drone Ever

The powerful systems inside Mavic Pro are easy to use, even for beginners. Using just your phone's touchscreen, you can use TapFly to direct Mavic Pro to go wherever you want, avoiding obstacles along the way. When you want to take a hands-free selfie, FlightAutonomy makes it possible to control the drone completely with just your gestures.

In Gesture mode, you can use gestures to have Mavic Pro locate you, center you in the frame and take the perfect shot as Mavic Pro's flashing lights count down to the photo. Sharing your best aerial moments has never been easier with live streaming to Facebook Live, Periscope and YouTube through the DJI GO app.

An updated version of DJI's ActiveTrack recognizes common subjects such as people, bicyclists, cars, boats and animals, which then sends Mavic Pro to follow behind, lead in front, circle above or track alongside the subject, keeping the camera focused on the subject while you concentrate on flight maneuvers. The new Terrain Follow mode means that you can race up a slope behind a subject while remaining at a constant height between 1 ft (0.3 m) and 33 ft (10 m).

At the other extreme, the new Tripod Mode is designed for indoor use, slowing and fine-tuning Mavic Pro's position and angle based on controller movement inputs to allowing for precision framing and safe indoor flight.

Immerse Yourself

Mavic Pro also pairs with DJI's new immersive DJI Goggles, displaying an 85-degree view from the drone in full 1080p for a true bird's-eye view of the world below. With built-in OcuSync, the goggles receive video directly from Mavic Pro in the air and not through the controller, reducing lag to a minimum - and allowing you to share the in-flight view with a friend.

Specially designed for aerial first-person view (FPV) applications, DJI Goggles allows you to flick between third person view and FPV in under a second. You can comfortably wear your glasses while wearing the goggles and quit FPV mode instantly by flipping the mask up.

Price and Availability

Mavic Pro's U.S. retail price will be $999 with the remote controller included, and $749 without the remote controller. Additional Mavic Pro Intelligent Flight Batteries will cost $89. A Mavic Pro Fly More Combo, which includes a Mavic Pro, two extra Intelligent Flight Batteries, extra propellers, a charging hub, an adapter, a car charger and a shoulder bag, will be available for $1,299.

Mavic Pro is immediately available for pre-order at dji.com/mavic and will begin shipping October 15. It will also be available in mid-October at DJI's three flagship stores in Shenzhen, Seoul and Hong Kong. Mavic Pro can also be ordered on Apple.com and will be available in Apple Stores in early November.

DJI Care Refresh

A new optional protection plan, DJI Care Refresh, is available in select countries and provides peace of mind for Mavic Pro owners. DJI Care Refresh covers accidental damage to the Mavic Pro aircraft, gimbal or camera during normal use for up to 12 months, and for an additional charge will offer up to two full replacements that are new or equivalent to new. DJI Care Refresh is available for $99 before a new Mavic Pro is activated, or within the first 48 hours after activation.

Review: X-Rite ColorMunki Photo - Camera Monitor Projector Printer Calibration

Overview : Designed specifically for photographers, the X-Rite ColorMunki Photo Color Management Solution provides display, projector and RGB/CMYK printer profiling in an easy-to-use all-in-one integrated solution with a streamlined interface, enabling photographers to easily, quickly and affordably match colors from display to print. The ColorMunki Photo software provides particular accuracy when profiling for FleshTones along with providing excellent grey balance for neutral Black & White output. Plus, you'll be able to send your images to your clients with a high level of confidence that they are viewed in a calibrated environment with the DigitalPouch communication tool.

Features :
  • Camera, Monitor & Projector Profiling
  • RGB & CMYK Printer Profiling
  • Ambient Light Measurement
  • Spot Color Measurement
  • Built-in White Calibration
  • No Cumbersome Accessories
  • DigitalPouch Communication Tool

Quality/Usability : If you're a photographer and you print whether it's at home or by a lab, its crucial to have accurate color representation. There are many monitor calibration products on the market but X-Rite is known for its color management systems such as ColorChecker Passport.

Included with the ColorMunki Photo is the unit, case with a weighted strap, USB cable, software CD, manual and a color checker.

The ColorMunki Photo is pretty much a big box with a curve on the front and a rotating dial on the sides. The bottom opens up the spot measurement target.

In the image above, the rotating dial is currently set for projector profiling. Turn the dial one notch down (towards the bottom corner) and its set for calibration. If you turn the dial where its pointing up, its set for measuring ambient lighting.

The ColorMunki Photo needs to go inside its soft case for calibration. The long weighted strap once it is at full length is used to counter balance the weight of the sensor.

There is a small protective shutter in the case, which needs to be opened for taking any measurements.

You can use the included software CDs that is included but I usually prefer tow download the latest software from the manufacturers website. The latest software can be found on X-Rite's support page [PC / MAC].

Once the file is downloaded, extract the file and you'll be given a setup file and a few other files. Screenshots are from the PC version.

Once you double click the setup file, you're brought to a window asking you to select your language.

Once you've chosen your language, you're brought to the welcome setup wizard screen informing you that you'll be installing the ColorMunki Photo software on your computer.

Like any software installation, you'll have to agree to the license agreement before you can continue.

You can also select where you want to install the program to but usually that is all set by default.

Before the device can be used, it will need to be activated and registered.

Once it's registered, it's time to start calibrating your monitor.

You have three options to choose from:
  • Match My Printer to My Display - Create both a display and profile printer to achieve screen to print color matching.
  • Profile My Display - Create a display profile to accurately view colors on your display or projector.
  • Profile My Printer - Create a printer profile to accurately reproduce colors on your printer.

This setup is based on the "Profile My Display".  You can choose from LCD, Laptop or Projector.

The Easy mode will calibrate your monitor to 6500K and a gamma of 2.2. Advanced mode offers various settings in relation to whitepoint, gamma, ambient compensation and pre-calibration.

You'll be asked to connect the ColorMunki Photo to your computer via USB. Once it's connected, the software will instruct you to turn the rotating dial to calibrate the device and begin measuring the monitor.

The software will tell you where to place the ColorMunki on the monitor.

The device is hung over your monitor so that the sensor can measure what colors your screen produces. The software goes through a series of different shades of red, green, blue, white and black.

Once the ColorMunk Photo has collected all the necessary information to build the new display profile, you can give it a name and save it. I personally leave it the same name but add a date to it to let me know when it was created i.e. "DISPLAY1_D65_09242016.icm".

Once it's saved, the software will give you a before and after comparison of what your monitor will look like.

Printer Profiling

If you print at home, you'll need to print out a color test chart with lots of colors on it and use the ColorMunki Photo to measure the colors simply by sliding it over the print out. During the measurement process, it may require you to do multiple passes over the strip if a strip is not correctly read in. You'll need to print out the second color test chart and perform the same procedure.

Once you've scanned the second test chart, the software will create a icc profile for you. The software also allows the option of setting various applications on your computer (Photoshop CS for example) to use this profile by default.

Spot Color Measurement

The ColorMunki also has the ability to make 'spot' measurements of colors and allows you to make use of these measurements in building up palettes and color schemes.

The rotating dial has three bumps on it which is the button you press for making measurements.

Conclusion : Overall, the X-Rite ColorMunki Photo - Camera Monitor Projector Printer Calibration is a must have for anyone who requires accurate color reproduction. The color reproduction between monitor and printing is fairly accurate on both my PIXMA MX series printer and PRO-1.

Sony Announces New Full-Frame α99 II A-mount Camera

Flagship A-mount camera Features Ultra-Fast 4D FOCUS with 79 hybrid cross AF points1 plus 12 fps continuous shooting2, High Resolution 42.4 MP Exmor R® CMOS sensor, 5-axis in-body image stabilization and more

COLOGNE, Germany, Sept. 19, 2016 – Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, has today introduced their new flagship A-mount camera, the α99 II.

Reaffirming Sony’s commitment to produce industry leading A-mount cameras, the impressive new camera combines the best of many of their latest digital imaging innovations including a new Hybrid Phase Detection AF system with exclusive Sony A-mount features such as Translucent Mirror Technology™. The result is a supremely specified, professional level camera that will be appealing to a variety of professional and enthusiast photographers.

“We are continuing to innovate with each new camera body, lens and accessory that we bring to market, offering compelling choices to both existing and prospective users of the Sony α system” said Neal Manowitz, Vice President of Digital Imaging at Sony Electronics. “With the α99 II, we’re delivering an industry-leading level of performance to A-mount owners and enthusiasts. Its powerful combination of speed and resolution is simply unmatched in today’s market.”

Redefining Autofocus
The new α99 II camera is Sony’s first full-frame camera to feature the acclaimed 4D Focus system, bringing a supreme level of AF performance to Sony’s A-mount line-up. The Hybrid Phase Detection AF system is enabled by combining a precision 79-point3 dedicated phase detection AF sensor with 399 focal plane phase detection AF points4 to produce a 79 hybrid cross AF point1 array. This enables incredibly precise autofocus performance and advanced subject tracking of any high-speed moving objects across the frame. In addition Translucent Mirror Technology, with no moving mirror, ensures steady, continuous AF operation and live image preview during both still image and video shooting. The precision AF system also performs exceptionally in low-light conditions, as it will function properly in brightness levels as low as EV-45 and in dark locations where most other cameras struggle.

In addition to its advanced autofocusing, the α99 II has been designed to allow for high resolution, continuous shooting at high frame rates. The camera features a new front-end LSI that works with the image sensor, BIONZ X® image processing engine and a newly designed shutter unit to enable continuous shooting at impressive speeds of up to 12fps2with AF/AE tracking6. Thanks to a large buffer, these shots can be viewed immediately after shooting, even when in high-speed continuous shooting mode. Additionally, if these high-speed shots are being taken indoors under artificial lighting, the camera can automatically detect flicker and time the shutter accordingly to minimize its effect on the resulting images7.

The new α99 II also has the ability to deliver continuous live shooting at up to 8 fps 8 with AF/AE tracking and minimal display lag thanks to overall improvements in the EVF algorithm. This offers photographers a shooting experience that closely mimics that of an optical viewfinder, while still offering all of the benefits of an electronic viewfinder including a live preview of exposure, white balance and several other camera settings. This continuous live view shooting can be set in 3 stages to match a variety of subjects: 8 fps, 6 fps and 4 fps.

Pixel Power
The back-illuminated full-frame 42.4MP9 Exmor R CMOS sensor in the new α99 II model features a gapless-on-chip design that allows for fast readout of large volumes of data and maximizes light gathering ability. The net result is very high sensitivity with low noise, wide dynamic range and 42.4MP resolution across an ISO range of 100-25600, expandable to ISO 50 – 102,40010.

The new camera has also been designed without an optical low-pass filter, ensuring that all of the finest natural details and textures can be captured with unprecedented depth and realism. Both compressed and uncompressed RAW files are readily available based on user preferences.

5-axis SteadyShot™ INSIDE Image Stabilization
Sony has designed a new in-body 5 axis image stabilization system for A-mount cameras that debuts for the first time in the α99 II model. Having proven to be incredibly popular in the ɑ7 II series of cameras, this five axis system effectively detects and compensates for movement in all axes including X and Y, pitch and yaw and camera roll, and ensures that all captured content is crisp and blur-free. The new stabilization system provides a shutter speed advantage of 4.5 steps11, ensuring the full potential of the 42.4MP sensor can be realized. Also, with a simple half press of the shutter button, the effect of this the image stabilization can be monitored in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen, allowing framing and focus to be accurately checked and continually monitored.

Improved design and operability
Based upon feedback from professional users, the design of new α99 II has noticeably evolved compared to its predecessor. The new model is 8% smaller than the original ɑ99 and features a newly designed grip, magnesium alloy body, dual SD card slots12 and dust and moisture resistance13.

The α99 II also features a new shutter unit that has an estimated life of more than 300,000 operations14, as well as an XGA OLED Tru-finder with a ZEISS® T* Coating that offers a powerful 0.78x magnification and delivers outstanding clarify from corner to corner. The viewfinder also has a fluorine coating on the outer lens to prevent fingerprints, dust, water, oil and dirt from sticking, ensuring a clear view.

The silent Multi Controller introduced in the original ɑ99 has been improved as well, as it now offers a click-stop ON/OFF switch in addition to allowing control of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation, AF area, AF mode and other settings. The α99 II also offers location data acquisition via a Bluetooth15 connection to a compatible mobile device and an updated menu structure to deliver a smoother navigational experience.

Movie Magic
For the first time in a Sony A-mount camera, the α99 II has the ability to record 4K video internally16 with full pixel readout and no pixel binning17 through usage of the professional friendly XAVC S format. The camera is capable of recording high quality footage at 100Mbps for 4K recording, and utilizing the full width of the large, full-frame image sensor in doing so. It also offers a new ‘Slow and Quick’ mode18 (S&Q) that supports both slow motion and quick motion. In this mode, frame rates from 1 fps to 120 fps can be selected in 8 steps for up to 60x quick motion and 5x slow motion recording19.

A host of other features for professional movie production workflow are also included in the α99 II such as picture profiles, time code and clean HDMI output as well as gamma assist for real time S-Log monitoring and a zebra mode for easier exposure adjustment. S-Log3 and S-Log2 gamma are both included as well.
