Kickstarter: CaptureLENS and Lens Kit Added to Everyday Messenger Bag

Peak Design just introduced the CaptureLENS and Lens Kit, 2 new products that are the best camera lens carry and quick-change system ever made. And to celebrate, they're launching them exclusively on Kickstarter in conjunction with their Everyday Messenger Bag.

So what is the difference between the CaptureLENS and Lens Kit?
  • CaptureLENS: Lens Kit lens adapter + a standard Capture clip (no plate, just the clip). CaptureLENS is for people who don't already own a Capture clip, or want an additional Capture clip so they can carry a camera and a lens at the same time.
  • Lens Kit: Just the lens adapter, no clip. Lens Kit is for people who already own a Capture clip. Note that Lens Kit works with all versions of Capture.
Currently, it supports 3 types of interchangeable lenses: Canon (EF and EF-S-mounts), Nikon (F-mount) and Sony (E and EF-mounts).

This is only available through Kickstarter when you pledge for the Everyday Messenger Bag. The CaptureLENS is $80 additional and the Lens Kit is $40 additional. It will be shipped separately from the bag as it has a different production schedule. The target date is to start shipping sometime December 2015 but some backers won't receive it until early 2016.

But don't worry if you're not backing the Everyday Messenger Bag. You'll still be able to purchase the CaptureLENS and Lens Kit outside of Kickstarter. Peak Design expects the CaptureLENS will retail for $90 and Lens Kit will retail for $50. Essentially saving $10 each when you preorder.

Quality/Usability : Being out on the field with no access to an outlet to charge your phone or tablet can be a pain. Even if you fully charged your items before heading out, there may be times where you're out longer than expected and lack of service, GPS, texting or data usage can cause your battery to drain drastically leaving you high and dry.

There have been times where I used my phone and tablet as a wireless viewfinder or to view images transferred via Eye-Fi and this can drain the battery on your device as well. So I've been looking for a reliable battery pack.

I've seen deals on portable battery packs but they cost like $20 or so but haven't seen many reviews. I don't mind spending a little extra if it has great reviews and does what it's suppose to do. I've been hearing about Anker battery packs and decided to pick up their 2nd Gen Astro3 12000mAh battery pack as well as a Pwr+ AC adapter. The AC adapter is optional but makes charging of the battery pack a lot quicker.

The Astro3 includes the external battery pack, webbed travel bag, micro USB cable and user manual. It's available in black or white.

The Pwr+ AC adapter doesn't come with anything except for the charger. With the AC adapter, it takes about 2 hours to fully charge. With the included USB cable, it can take 5-6 hours.

The Astro3 has nice sleek design with a matte finish. It also has a rubbery feel to it that can withstand bumps and drops. There are no exterior buttons. The front has the Anker logo and near the top are 10 LED power meters form a circle and is hidden behind the black casing.

These 10 LEDs (10% increments) is your battery level indicator. With a slight shake, the LEDs light up to reveal how much battery is left. The more battery you use up, the less LEDs are lit up. When its down to the last bar, it will start to blink informing you that it will need to be recharged.

There are four ports on the Astro3: one Input, one Smart and two Universal. *NOTE: White version has three Smart charging ports.

The difference between the Smart and Universal is that the Smart port detects the type of device connected and provides full-speed charging of up to 5V/2.4A. The two Universal ports charges most devices at up to 1.5A (4A max). When I purchased this, I didn't know that the white had all Smart ports. I'm also not a fan of white devices but in this case, I think I would of made an exception. Why are there two versions? No clue but I hope the black version gets updated to all Smart ports soon.

The Input port is where you would plug the Pwr+ AC adapter or USB cable to charge the Astro3 battery pack. A shake of the battery pack will begin the charging process. Charging with the included USB cable can take up to 9 hours to charge. That is why I opted to purchase the optional Pwr+ AC Adapter because it only takes 2 hours. It's definitely worth picking up. Once it is fully charged, all 10 LED indicators won't be lit.

On a full charge, I was able to charge my Samsung Galaxy S3 and LG G3 almost four times (it's rated to charge Apple iPhones up to six times). I was also able to charge my Apple iPad Mini twice. All charging was done when the devices had less than 5% battery life or a completely drained.

Conclusion : Overall, the Anker 2nd Gen Astro3 12000mAh Portable Charger Backup External Battery Pack is a must have item if you're constantly on the go. Not only is this great for when you're not near an outlet during an event but also great if you're traveling for business or on a family vacation.

Review: BounceLite Flash Modifier Softbox

Overview : Bouncelite is designed by a photographer for photographers.

It gives versatility when shooting in challenging lighting conditions and gives control when mixing flash with daylight and artificial light sources.

Features :
  • Mini Softbox
  • Light spill controlling door
  • Fully adjustable reflective white card
  • Quickly changing filter system
  • Flexible, robust mounting
  • Fits most tilt and rotate flash heads
Quality/Usability : BounceLite was first introduced on Kickstarter. It was successfully funded on August 2014. The BounceLite looks unique and different from the diffuser caps, bounce's actually a combination of them.

Included with the BounceLite are mounting pads, filter cassettes, gels sheets, leather wallet to hold cassettes and gels, pamphlet and neoprene carry case. There is also an unboxing video further down below.

The BounceLite is made of robust ABS plastic

One of BounceLite's most exceptional features is the in-built filter system, which allows the photographer to quickly change filters with unparalleled ease. Additionally, the cassette can be taken out to allow for normal flash, all without removing the BounceLite.

The filter cassette is specifically designed so that the photographer can change their color gel quickly. It's also housed and secured inside the diffuser, the user can see exactly which filter is being used while shooting (it also makes a satisfying click sound).

There are two sets of color gels. The 'Venue' gels are ideal set for color correction. The 'Adventure' gels are for any photographer looking to play with light creatively.

Where do you keep all of your homemade or BounceLite color gels? There's no place better than their uniquely designed filter wallet, which safely stores both the cassette (filter holder) and the color gels collection.

Even when you need to shoot in direct flash mode, you are still able to utilize the filter system.

Included with the BounceLite are two mounting pads. Both are different sizes; small and large. These are only required if the flash head of your flash is small and needs additional support. I'm using a Canon 600EX-RT and since flash head is big, there is no need to use the pads. Even if I wanted to use the pads, I couldn't since the flash head took up majority of the area.

Above is a list of flashes and models that is compatible with the BounceLite.

When the bounce door is closed, the only light exit is through the front diffuser creating softer quality light output.

When the bounce door opens, it can operate at interchangeable degree of angle. This gives full control over the amount of light spill and acts as a white card to divert the light forward onto the subject.

The bounce door can also open all the way back. This allows the flashgun to be used in a direct position if you need full power to reach far away subjects. There is no need to remove BounceLite from the flash head. It's also ideal for off-camera use to create studio lighting.

One of the most present problems with current diffusers is the tendency to fall off. This can happen just before you take your important shot, which is infuriating and exactly why BounceLite is as sturdy and unshakeable as they could make it.

When using the BounceLite, you'll need to turn the flash head so that the BounceLite is facing forward. By turning the flash head, this allows you to continue to use the flash in portrait mode without having to readjust or remove the BounceLite.

The animation above shows the amount of light being let out from just the diffuser and top closed to the top bounce card fully open.

Conclusion : Overall, the BounceLite Flash Modifier Softbox does a great job at being a diffuser, bounce card and portable softbox in one. The BounceLite is very sturdy and secure when mounted. It's a little pricier than other flash modifiers on the market. It's also a bit big and clunky but its fairly light and won't make your camera top heavy.
