Indiegogo: FlashQ - The Little Cube for Flash Photography

If you've been browsing the site, you know that I have mentioned Kickstarter quite a few times. Kickstarter helped launch companies such as Peak Design and Custom SLR to where they are today as well as a bunch of other camera accessories.

Indiegogo is another site similar to Kickstarter where startup look for people like you to help them launch their product. One of the new items I was introduced on Indiegogo is the FlashQ. FlashQ is a 2.4GHz Wireless Flash Trigger. It is the smallest wireless flash trigger ever and the perfect companion to Mirrorless and Prosumer Cameras. The idea is the same as the wireless transmitter that is released by OEM manufacturers or 3rd party such as YongNuo, Pixel, etc. The FlashQ makes the off-camera flash lighting possible at any angles and unleash the creativity in photographers.

The FlashQ comes in multiple colors: black, white, pink and blue. Early bird special lets you get the FlashQ for $30. Once that is sold out, you'll have to purchase it for $39 which includes one transmitter and one receiver. $55 will get you one transmitter and two receivers. $129 gets you one transmitter and one receiver and your signature printed on the front face of the FlashQ.

Here is a video with more information and of it in action:

This definitely looks interesting and a fraction of the cost of other wireless transmitters and the size is so compact. If you're advanced in lighting, don't even both. No TTL support and up to 1/250 sync speed. I'm really interested to really see if a single CR2032 battery can fire 100K flashes.

There's not much to the FlashQ. Two buttons and an LED status. It runs on CR2032 watch batteries. The battery is stated to have a 6-month standby time and lets you take 100K shots on a single battery.

Technical Specifications
  • Size: 25 x 25 x 15 mm
  • 2.4GHz low-power digital radio
  • 160 radio channels
  • 20M operating range
  • No TTL, up to 1/250 sync speed*
  • Max. 900us X-sync latency (by FlashQ system)
  • Tolerate Max. 300V port sync voltage (on FlashQ receiver)
  • 3V voltage present on male hot shoe centre pin (on FlashQ transmitter)
  • PC Sync cable (via Func. port) for studio strobes
  • More than 100K fires for a battery life
  • 6 months battery standby time
  • LED indication: Green – operating; Red – triggering; Blue - pairing

To use the FlashQ, attach FlashQ transmitter to your camera hot shoe on top, FlashQ receiver to a remote flash via hot shoe or sync cord, pair-up FlashQ device and start taking photos with endless possibilities of flash lighting.

It's compatible with a bunch of cameras such as Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc.

If you're interested in the FlashQ or want to contribute and purchase one, you can go to their Indiegogo page.

Quality/Usability : We previously reviewed an older version of the Gary Fong Lightsphere Collaspible. In that review, one of our complaints was that it took some practice to get the Lightsphere over the flash. In this review, we'll be focusing more on the new design of the Lightsphere Collapsible Speed Mount and to see if anything was improved. The outcome and performance will be the same.

(l) Portrait Kit; (m) Wedding & Event Kit; (r) Fashion & Commercial Kit

There are different combos available for the Lightsphere Collapsible Speed Mount. You can just buy the LSC by itself, with PowerSnoot Speed Mount (Portrait Kit), with additional colored domes (Wedding & Event Kit) or with everything from Portrait and Even kit plus gel kits (Fashion & Commercial Kit), as shown below. All kits come with a carry case and instruction DVD.

We'll be taking a look at the Wedding & Event Kit (WEK). As mentioned above, the WEK includes the Lightsphere Collapsible Speed Mount, 3 colored domes (white, amber and gray), instructional DVD and carry case.

The Speed Mount is made of the same material as the previous Lightsphere Collapsible and approximately the same size. So if you have other Lightsphere accessories, they'll fit. The big difference is in the name; Speed Mount. The Speed Mount is much more flexible and open that it uses a velcro system to attach the Lightsphere to your flash head. With a flexible opening, the Speed Mount can now accommodate larger flash heads such as the Canon 600EX-RT or Nikon SB900/910.

And if you didn't know, you can use the white dome to help with your custom white balance by placing the dome in front of your lens and snapping a picture. You'll use that picture you just took and use that as your custom white balance setting.

On the previous Lightsphere Collapsible, it took some effort to place the LSC over the flash head. But once it's on, it won't fall off. Here are some tests to show how strong the new Lightsphere Speed Mount is: *WARNING* This is for demonstration purposes only. I highly suggest not doing this on the field or lifting your camera from the Speed Mount.

The video below shows the difference between the previous Lightsphere Collapsible and the new Speed Mount version:

The videos below show you how to mount the Lightsphere Collapsible Speed Mount to your Canon and Nikon flashes:

With the Lightsphere Collapsible and no dome, it should be used when you're indoors because you want to use the light bouncing off the ceiling as a fill light. With the dome facing out, the entire Lightsphere Collapsible is entirely lit and makes for a larger diffuser. This should be used when there is a low ceiling because you'll have too much light coming from above. It can also be used outdoors when you want a little fill light with the flash and dome pointing directly at your subject (lens hood recommended). With the dome facing in, it doesn't make it a big diffuser because its not as high. If you're aiming the flash directly at your subject and you don't have a lens hood, you'll want to dome facing in.

How and when to use the Lightsphere:
  • Dome On (face out - Outdoors with lens hood) - Point flash at subject to give better lighting because its pointing directly at your subject and giving the strongest light possible.
  • Dome On (face in - Outdoors with no lens hood) - Point flash at subject to provide fill light. Being too close or trying to shoot too many people will cause a light fall off on the outer edges.
  • Dome Off (Indoors) - Point flash towards ceiling to bounce light off ceiling.
Conclusion : Overall, the Gary Fong Lightsphere Collapsible Speed Mount Flash Diffuser is an improvement over the previous Lightsphere Collapsible. The LSC Speed Mount is definitely a lot easier to get on and off camera flashes. If you own a Canon 600EX-RT or Nikon SB900/910 and you're looking for a flash diffuser, the Lightsphere Collapsible Speed Mount is the way to go. As an added bonus, it comes with a carry pouch to store your LSC and accessories. You can even clip the pouch to your camera bag.

Kickstarter: SWIVIT Pro for GoPro

If you own a GoPro or have used one, majority if not all of the accessories don't allow you to rotate the GoPro left or right. They usually only let you aim the GoPro up or down. In comes to SWIVIT PRO. The SWIVIT PRO by Jason Morlon allows you to capture what's going on around you with a 360 degree rotation without unmounting and remounting the GoPro or anything. Simply rotate the SWIVIT PRO while the GoPro is recording.

Depending on availability, you can get the SWIVIT PRO for as low as $17-20 for you early birds. When these are sold out, the SWIVIT PRO can be purchased for $25. $50 gets you the SWIVIT PRO, sticker pack, name on their website and a trucker hat. $350 gets you everything listed PLUS your own role in a SWIVIT promo video (you submit your name and video and they'll place your footage into the promo video).

Capture more of what's going on around you with 360 degrees of rotation, without interruption or hassle.

Life's greatest moments happen all around us—not just in front of the camera!

We love that GoPro cameras capture everything everywhere, but the current mounts and accessories have a huge limitation: the camera is locked in a single direction. Until now, it’s been challenging and inconvenient to change the camera direction, which involved fumbling with mounts, bolts, linkages, and adjustments.

Well you don’t need to do that anymore.

The SWIVIT PRO gives you the freedom to quickly and easily capture multiple angles—and more of what's going on around you—right in the moment.

No matter what, how, or where you film...

The SWIVIT PRO is a must-have for every GoPro user's accessory kit.

The SWIVIT PRO can also:
  • Turn the camera to face backward while not recording, which can help protect lens from debris damage when traveling at higher speeds.
  • Help capture 360° of video while mounted on a tripod or other mounts, giving you better stability and continuity than with handheld filming.
  • Assist with more than just action sports: it’s indispensable at events or during stage and film production.
  • Work with numerous camera and rigging setups to collect B-roll; get simultaneous, multi-angle footage without affecting the main shot, or use it for the main shot, too.
  • Play nice with numerous GoPro and 3rd-party mounts, including many of the ones that have been successfully funded here on Kickstarter!
  • Guarantee offline, analog simplicity: No connections required. No OS dependencies. No worries...
  • And the biggest perk of them all: VERSATILITY!

Review: Peak Design POV Kit for Capture Camera Clip

Peak Design Coupon Code

Overview : The Peak Design P.O.V. Kit turns any Capture Camera Clip into a point-of-view video mount. The kit is made up of three main components: an adapter plate, a J-Arm and a point-and-shoot plate. The adapter plate locks into your Capture camera clip and has a multi-prong hinge connector that is the attachment point for the J-Arm or point-and-shoot plate. The J-arm allows you to attach any GoPro Hero camera and enables the GoPro to be adjusted up-and-down and side-to-side by adjusting the thumb screws.

The point-and-shoot plate connects the adapter plate to any slim bodied point-and-shoot camera with a 1/4"-20 tripod thread. It allows you to shoot point-of-view video or carry your point-and-shoot camera in a low-profile manner by folding it flat against your body.

Note: This item requires the Capture or CapturePRO. It is not a stand-alone product.

Features :
  • Works with all versions of Capture: P.O.V. Kit works best with Capture v2 and CapturePRO, but can also be used with original Capture units.
  • Includes J-Arm for GoPro®: Allows for mounting any GoPro® Hero camera.
  • Includes point-and-shoot adapter: Take P.O.V. video using your point-and-shoot, or carry your point-and-shoot more comfortably with Capture.
  • Lifetime guarantee from Peak Design.

Quality/Usability : Peak Design has been releasing some very innovative products for the Capture Clip. They've turned their Capture Clip into a ultra-versatile video mount by releasing the P.O.V. Kit. The P.O.V. Kit turns any backpack strap, belt or strap-like object into a mount for a GoPro® or any P.O.V. video device. This allows you to record videos hands-free without having to hold on to the recording device.

The P.O.V. Kit comes with a J-Arm, point-and-shoot adapter, mounting plate, long clamping screws, connection screw, stabilizer pad, hex tool, pouch and pamphlet. The stabilizer pad provides additional support to your backpack strap.

The J-Arm allows you to mount any GoPro Hero to the Capture Clip. You will need to use the screw that comes with the GoPro.

The point-and-shoot plate looks like their PRO Plates (ARCAplate, DUALplate and MICROplate) but will only work with the P.O.V. Kit. It has a 1/4"-20 screw that attaches to the bottom of the camera. You'll need to use a coin or included hex tool to tighten the screw.

The Capture adapter plate allows you to slide your GoPro or point-and-shoot camera into the Capture Clip, which is required. The plate also lets you insert into the Capture Clip in any direction.

As I just mentioned, a Capture Clip is required in order for the P.O.V. Kit to be mounted. If your backpack strap is thin, it's highly suggested that you use the stabilizer pad with long clamping screw. The pad will offer stability and support while you're moving. The stabilizer pad would go behind your shoulder strap followed by the Capture Clip which will hold it in place.

If you don't have a backpack strap, you can place the Capture with your P.O.V. Kit onto your pants belt and record your video from a waist view. You can also place it on your strap of your boots or onto your bike. So as long there is something the Capture Clip can mount to.

J-Arm for GoPro Hero Cameras

The images above is to show what is needed and how to set up your GoPro. First you'll need to attach the J-Arm to the Capture adapter using the included connection screw. Next, you'll attach the GoPro to the J-Arm. You will need to use the long thumb screw that came with the GoPro in order to attach the GoPro to the J-Arm.

Here is the image of it mounted onto the Capture Clip and a backpack. Thanks to the J-Arm, you can angle the Go-Pro to the left or right as well as up and down. You can flip the Capture adapter plate around which will now turn your GoPro upside down and you can take a selfie.

Point-and-Shoot Plate for Point and Shoot Cameras

For the point-and-shoot, all you need is the point-and-shoot plate and Capture adapter. First, attach the point-and-shoot adapter to your point-and-shoot. Next, you'll want to attach the point-and-shoot plate to the Capture adapter using the included connection screw.

With this set up, you only have the ability to move the camera up and down. It also sits closer to your body but still allows you to view images/videos and easily access buttons and menus.

It can also be used as a mounting solution to hold you camera on your pants belt.

J-Arm + Point-and-Shoot Plate for Point and Shoot Cameras

In the instructional video (below), Peak Design shows that you can rotate the point-and-shoot camera left and right by simply twisting it. However, by doing so, I feel that this will eventually loosen the plate from the camera. I haven't seen the following setup mentioned or suggested anywhere else but you can incorporate the J-Arm with the point-and-shoot plate (see update below). In order for this to work, you'll need to have a long thumb screw (included with GoPro or it can be purchased separately from Amazon).

Installation is a mix of both installations of J-Arm and Point-and-Shoot Plate. First, you'll want to attach the point-and-shoot plate to your point-and-shoot camera. Next, you'll attach the Capture adapter to the J-Arm using the connection screw. Finally, you'll connect the camera with the point-and-shoot plate to the J-Arm using the long thumb screw.

This now offers me more flexibility rather than restrict my point-and-shoot movement to up and down only. I can now move my camera left and right like a GoPro. This does make the camera stick out further and lower.

Below is a more detailed instructional video of how to install the P.O.V. Kit:

Conclusion : Overall, the Peak Design P.O.V. Kit for Capture Camera Clip is a must have for your Capture Clip especially if you're an adventurer, outdoor enthusiast and do video recordings. Installation is really simple and straight forward. Like all Peak Design products, they are top quality.

If you don't have the Capture Clip, Peak Design also sells the Capture P.O.V. Camera Clip. This new kit will include the Capture Clip, everything I reviewed above and will include a long connection screw as well as a tool to help tighten down bolts - particularly if you're wearing gloves. You're pretty much getting the P.O.V. Kit for ONLY $10!!
