Press Release: ExpoImaging Introduces ExpoDisc 2.0 Professional White Balance Filter

ExpoImaging has introduced the ExpoDisc 2.0 Professional White Balance Filter for digital cameras. The original ExpoDisc Professional White Balance Filter was available in separate Neutral and Portrait (warming) versions. The ExpoDisc 2.0 combines these versions into a single tool and can meter for 18% incident exposure and has 2 levels of warming gels, which can be inserted into a recesses on the face of the ExpoDisc. The user can select for warmer skin tones in portraits. With the original version you had to purchase a second expodisc for warmer tones. The ExpoDisc 2.0 will initially be available in a 77mm filter size with more sizes to follow. As with the original ExpoDisc, a larger ExpoDisc 2.0 can be used with smaller filter size lenses by simply holding the ExpoDisc 2.0 over the lens during the white balance setting procedure.

The ExpoDisc 2.0 77mm White Balance Filter retails for $49.95. You'll be able to pick up the new ExpoDisc 2.0 from any of these retailers when it becomes available: Amazon | B&H Photo | Adorama

ExpoDisc 2.0: The Original Professional White Balance Filter Gets Even Better; New Filter Design Includes Selectable Custom Warming Gels

Set white balance, meter for exposure and dust map the image sensor with the only calibrated and certified 18% transmission incident light metering filter

ExpoImaging, Inc., designers of innovative camera accessories for the photographic market, today introduced the patented ExpoDisc 2.0 Professional White Balance Filter, an incident light metering filter for digital cameras, for both still and video applications.

"With the original ExpoDisc, we invented the digital white balance filter and established it in the market as the premium white balance tool by individually testing and certifying every ExpoDisc,” said Erik Sowder, ExpoImaging CEO. “Now, ExpoDisc 2.0 introduces user-selectable warming gels, an improved mounting design, and a new lower price-point.”

Whether shooting in RAW or JPEG, photographers using ExpoDisc 2.0 to white balance their images save valuable time during the photo editing process.

Beyond its primary function as a white balance tool, the precision calibration and uniformity of the ExpoDisc 2.0 means that it can also be used to meter for an 18% incident exposure and to dust map the image sensor. Made in the USA, every ExpoDisc 2.0 is tested by hand on a transmission spectrophotometer and individually adjusted using custom filters to ensure neutrality and an 18% total light transmission across the visible spectrum. This neutrality is important because using a non-neutral tool for white balance can actually add undesirable color casts to images.

The original ExpoDisc Professional White Balance Filter was available in separate Neutral and Portrait (warming) versions. ExpoDisc 2.0 combines these versions into a single tool. ExpoDisc 2.0 includes two levels of custom warming gels which can be inserted into recesses on the face of the ExpoDisc, enabling photographers to add varying degrees of warmth for pleasing skin tones.

The ExpoDisc 2.0’s new filter mount design attaches securely to lenses and even to low-profile threaded lens filters.

The ExpoDisc 2.0 will initially be available in a 77mm filter size with more sizes to follow. As with the original ExpoDisc, a larger ExpoDisc 2.0 can be used with smaller filter size lenses by simply holding the ExpoDisc 2.0 over the lens during the white balance procedure.

Kickstarter: Custom Bracket C-Plate: Camera Plate for Sling Strap / Holster & Tripods

Custom Brackets has launched a new Kickstarter campaign for a Arca Swiss and Manfortto mount style camera plate with anti-twist plate. The C-Plate allows you to mount your camera on a tripod and also use a sling style or hostler style system without interfaces. The first thing when I saw this, it's a mash up of Custom SLR's M-Plate, Spider Holster and Carry Speed's F-1 Foldable Plate.

The C-Plate sits flat and never requires you to take your shoulder strap or holster pin off the plate. This is because of the offset connection point. The C-Plate has a built in slot to hold your allen wrench. Custom Brackets states that the C-Plate doesn't block access to battery door. This may be true for cameras like the Canon 5d Mark III or Nikon D800 but what about a small camera like the Canon Rebel series or even the SL1?

The funding period is Nov 5, 2013 – Dec 10, 2013 (35 days). Pricing starts at $40 for Early Bird but once the allotment of 100 is fulfilled, the regular Kickstarter price is $50. For $85, it gets you 2 plates.

More information about the C-Plate after the break. They also provide a comparison list on Kickstarter between the C-Plate vs the competitors on their Kickstarter page.

About the C-Plate:
  • Completely designed, engineered, and manufactured in the USA! (Patent pending)
  • The last camera plate you will ever buy! Our plates will work with any DSLR camera, allowing you to use the same plate, even when you upgrade to your next camera.
  • Safety First – You can trust our plate with your camera. The main reason why the camera screw loosens over time is because of the camera twisting. Our plates use specially designed camera anti-twist arms. Once your camera is attached, the arms prevent the camera from twisting. This feature sets us apart from other plates, giving you peace-of-mind.
  • Always have the assembly tool available – the allen wrench is stored within the camera plate.
  • Battery door remains accessible when plate is installed.
  • Our plate sits flat and never requires you to take your shoulder strap or holster pin off the plate. We accomplished this by off-setting the connection point; which allows the plates to work on all quick releases and provides plenty of clearance under the lens to comfortably use the zoom.
  • Built-in hand strap attachment point (included, not an additional part for an extra cost).
  • Our plates are engineered to be lightweight and strong. Our current prototype of C-Plate AS2 weighs only 2.2 oz. and we expect to cut it down to less than 2 oz. in final production.
  • The C-Plate AS2 and C-Plate M2 allow you to leave your Black Rapid strap’s carabiner screw-lock gate safely screwed closed at all times. A stainless steel bushing in the plate prevents wear from the carabiner.
  • The C-Plate AS3 and C-Plate M3 use an added safety to ensure the strap will never unscrew itself accidentally over time.
  • Arca-Swiss style plates have laser engraved reference lines for easy setup.
  • Camera screw: Captive ¼”-20 screw (uses allen wrench stored within the C-Plate).
  • Main plate: Aluminum, tumbled, and hard anodized (type III).
  • Anti-twist arms: Aluminum, tumbled, and anodized (type II).
  • Anti-twist arms available in colors: black, green, or red. Green and red are only available on Kickstarter. The arms are adjustable with allen wrench stored within the C-Plate.
  • Anti-twist posts are machined from Delrin® acetal plastic to prevent any scratching of the camera body.
The Configurations for the C-Plate
Arca-Swiss style compatible:
  • C-Plate AS1 (For Spider Camera Holster™ & Carry Speed™)
  • C-Plate AS2 (For Black Rapid™)
  • C-Plate AS3 (For Sun Sniper™, Custom SLR™, & Joby™)
Manfrotto™ RC2 Series compatible:
  • C-Plate M1 (For Spider Camera Holster™ & Carry Speed™)
  • C-Plate M2 (For Black Rapid™)
  • C-Plate M3 (For Sun Sniper™, Custom SLR™, & Joby™)

Review: Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 Fluid Video Monopod

Review: Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 Fluid Video Monopod

Overview : Manfrotto's Fluid Video Monopod w/Head will take you somewhere you might never have been: more than 6 feet off the ground with a monopod. The maximum height of 6.56' (200 cm), minimum height of 2.5' (76.5 cm), and included compact, lightweight fluid head of this 4-section aluminum monopod give you versatility to spare. The head has a long sliding plate, and the ergonomic pan-bar provides smooth panning and tilting. Three mini supports at the base bring added stability. This monopod and head were designed specifically for light prosumer and professional compact HD camcorders plus lightweight spotting scopes (up to 8.8 lbs).

Features :
  • The ergonomic pan-bar allows smooth panning and tilting movements
  • Maximum height of 6.56' (200 cm)
  • Minimum height of 2.5' (76.5 cm)
  • The small, compact and lightweight fluid head was developed and designed to specifically to support the latest light prosumer and professional compact HD camcorders plus lightweight spotting scopes up to 8.8 lbs
  • Updated controls on the fluid head allow a more solid grip and better fluidity, plus improved performance and ergonomics
  • The fluid head's improved internal fluid cartridges, a pan-bar rosette and a bigger sliding plate optimize the position of the camera or spotting scope, relative to its center of gravity

NOTE: This review is based on the monopod only. I purchased Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 monopod through a camera forum and it did not included the 701HDV Fluid Tripod Head.

Quality/Usability : I've owned a tripods and although they do a great job at keeping my camera steady but they don't do a good job at being portable. I browse a few camera forums and usually take a look in the Buy/Sell sections to see if I can find any deals and I happened to stumble upon a seller selling a brand new Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 Monopod but without the fluid head. The price was half of what a complete set would cost and since I already have my own tripod head, I couldn't pass up on the offer.

As you would expect from Manfrotto products, the 561BHDV-1 is sturdy and top quality. The monopod measures 26" inches at its shortest height and just over 6.5 feet at its longest. To extend the monopod, there are three (3) quick flip locks. It weighs just a little over 2lbs (over 4lbs with fluid video head). Remember, that this review is just the monopod without the fluid head.

Review: Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 Fluid Video Monopod

The top of the monopod houses a 3/8 screw. You can mount any ball head or a video head that you want.

Review: Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 Fluid Video Monopod Review: Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 Fluid Video Monopod

The foot of the monopod has two types of foot. The first foot is the monopod rubber foot. This allows the monopod to stay grounded to the floor without slipping and sliding. The second type of foot is what makes the 561BHDV-1 different from other monopods. Three mini-legs fold down turning it into a "tripod". This keeps the monopod upright without holding it (I wouldn't leave it unattended but now you don't have to use a death grip to keep it standing).

Review: Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 Fluid Video Monopod

To fold the mini-legs back up, just pull back on the pins and fold them down (when monopod is held upside down).

Review: Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 Fluid Video Monopod
Review: Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 Fluid Video Monopod Review: Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 Fluid Video Monopod

Within this base is a ball joint that allows the monopod to swivel but still stay grounded. Manfrotto calls this the Fluid Drag System (FDS). This is great if you need to get a steady angled shot. To add additional weight and support to prevent the monopod from moving, you can step on one of the tripod legs. I have read on the internet that the ball joint can get stuck or have a "popping issue". Some have suggested loosening some screws, adding grease or WD-40. If not, you can just call Manfrotto and have it sent to be fixed.

Conclusion : Overall, the Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 Fluid Video Monopod is my most favorite monopod. Not only is it stylish looking but also the ease of use. The best part is the monopod legs. My gear can still stand up-right without me putting a death grip on it to prevent it from falling.

Press Release: Custom SLR Launches New Kickstarter Project - The Air Strap

Today, our good friends at Custom SLR launched a new project on Kickstarter and it’s called the Air Strap—a lightweight, breathable, and versatile alternative to traditional camera straps.

The problem with most camera straps is they’re thin, uncomfortable, and hard to adjust. They designed the Air Strap to tackle those three pain points. Some features:

Breathable vents and moisture wicking fabric channel heat and sweat away from your shoulder to keep you cool.
Cushy neoprene padding absorbs shock for maximum comfort.
Quick-adjust slider lets you shorten the strap to keep your camera secure at your side. When you need to take a photo, just pull and slide the strap to a longer length.
Rotating buckle swivels, so the strap moves with you for better flexibility.
Versatility. The Air Strap is compatible with most cameras. With an optional attachment, it can easily attach to any bag, such as a laptop bag or duffel bag.

We reviewed some of Custom SLR's products such as the Split Strap and Glide Strap and we had nothing but praise. We can't wait to try out the new Air Strap and of course, we'll have a full review of it when it is available.

For a pledge of $25 or more, you get the Air Strap and laptop strap attachment. $50 or more gets you both items and a black C-Loop. $100 or more gets you all that plus a Pro-Dot and M-Plate Pro. And for $250 or more, you get all of that PLUS dinner on Custom SLR in San Francisco (you'll have to pay/get there yourself).

Custom SLR Launches Kickstarter Campaign to Fund the Air Strap: a Camera Strap That Does More With Less

This lightweight and breathable camera strap provides more comfort and versatility for photographers of every kind, all at an affordable price.

SAN FRANCISCO, California—November 14, 2013—With four successfully funded Kickstarter campaigns under its belt, Custom SLR, a photography accessories company in Silicon Valley, today launched its fifth project: the Air Strap, a camera strap that does more with less. Featuring breathable vents, moisture wicking fabric and a quick adjust slider, the Air Strap provides more comfort and versatility for any photographer looking to replace the uncomfortable, hard to adjust strap that comes with his or her camera.

"Every photographer deserves a comfortable shooting experience," said Ivan Wong, chief operating officer at Custom SLR. "With the Air Strap, we wanted to create a professional quality strap that was affordable enough for anyone who uses a camera. We’re excited to deliver a feature rich strap at a great price point."

Following the overwhelming success of its patent pending Split Strap, Custom SLR now has a second camera strap to add to its line of innovative photography solutions. The Air Strap features a convenient quick adjust slider that allows photographers to shorten the strap to keep the camera secure at their side when maneuvering through crowds and tight spaces; when they need to take a photo, they can easily pull the slider to extend the strap. For maximum comfort and flexibility, the Air Strap has cushy neoprene padding with wicking fabric on the top and bottom, and buckles that swivel with each movement. The Air Strap is compatible with most cameras, and with an optional attachment, it can be used with most bags, such as laptop and gym bags.

Starting today, the Air Strap will be made available first to backers who fund the project during its 44 day campaign, which ends on Dec. 27, 2013. For more details, visit the Custom SLR Air Strap Kickstarter page:

Review: Fotopro C5i Camera Tripod Monopod Kit with FPH-52Q Ball Head

Overview : The C5i range are a beautifully designed Aluminium-magnesium tripod which has all the functions required for a professional tripod with the addition of a built in monopod. Using an advanced anodic oxidation process these colorful tripods are wear and scratch resistant and have a sleek smooth finish. The reverse folded function enables this to be of a compact size and the construction using Fotopro advanced manufacturing technology creates a very durable and stable tripod. Using an ergonomic G-Lock design, leg locks only need a ¼ turn to lock or loosen the leg sections. The molded rubber locks are easy to handle even when wearing gloves. The 2 sectioned center column can easily be reversed which is ideal for low level use and contains an attachment to hang additional weight. The C5i comes complete with a color matched FPH-52Q ball, together with a free high quality case.

Features :
  • Light Weight: The C5i aluminium-magnesium tripod weighs 3.7 pounds.
  • Compact Size: Great for Traveling as it features a reversible design, which makes the tripod shorter, portable and easy to carry.
  • Versatile: 2-in-1 Tripod / Monopod
  • Monopod: The tripod leg can easily be removed and transformed into a monopod.
  • Ergonomic: The ergonomic G-Lock design allows for a quick and simple ¼ turn to lock or loosen the leg sections.
  • Arca Swiss: The C5i comes complete with a Arca Swiss compatible FPH-52Q ball.
  • Weight: 3.7 pounds
  • Capacity: 17.6 lbs.
  • Max height: 61.8 in.
  • Min height: 9.4 in.
  • Folded length: 16.9 in.

Quality/Usability : I've gone through many tripods. I've been switching and swapping between a few tripods both for personal use and to help our readers know what is currently available and what is new. I have a Manfrotto 055XPROB that I use and love since I'm able to turn the center post horizontal. This is great for product shots, reviews and videos but its a bit on the heavy side and big if you're traveling.

I've been looking for a quality tripod that is light in weight and small enough to travel with. Our good friends over at Custom SLR partnered with Fotopro to bring their products to the USA. Custom SLR makes awesome camera accessory products and we reviewed quite a few of them and have nothing but praise. So with Custom SLR partnering with Fotopro, I trust their judgement and support in the products. So why not give it a try?

The Fotopro C5i line comes in five colors: Titanium, Orange, Red, Blue, Green. I opted to go with the Red as it reminds me of the Canon Red and matches my L lenses. Plus, I wanted something a little different and something that would stand out. The C5i includes a ball head, carry case, instruction manual, hook that attaches to bottom of center post for counterweight, tools, quick release plate and monopod pouch.

When it comes to travel tripods, the legs are folded back. This allows it to give it that small portable form factor. Fotopro does have a line of travel tripods that are even smaller. When folded, its 16.9 inches and weighs only 3.7 lbs.

The images above shows the C5i at different heights. First image shows the legs spread out from the folded position. Second image shows the legs full extended. Third image shows the center column at its lowest point and fourth image shows tripod at the lowest it can get with the center column removed.

What's great about the C5i is that it comes with a color matching FPH-52Q Arca-Swiss ball head and a quick release plate. You don't have to go out and spend extra money. It's pretty much unpack, mount, setup and you're ready to use it. There's nothing different about the ball head from others on the market. Small knob on the side of ball head adjusts tension for panning. Bigger knob on the side of ball head adjusts tension for ball head. The knob on the ball head mount has a bubble leveler.

If you already have a Arca-Swiss compatible quick release plate, you don't have to use the one that is included. I've used the ball head with Custom SLR M-Plate, Peak Design PROplates and Hejnar Photo plates and they all work perfectly fine.

Each tripod leg has a leg angle locking mechanism settings. This locks the tripod legs when extended further out. Each tripod leg also has a feature called G-Lock which is a rubber twist-lock. The G-Lock is what locks the tripod legs in place and from extending. A simple 1/4 turn and you can extend the tripod legs. 1/4 turn the other way locks the tripod legs.

Another great feature about the C5i is that one of the legs can be converted into a monopod. To set up one of the legs as a monopod, you'll know which one is the tripod based on what is seen. The one with the monopod leg has a padded cover that has the Fotopro name on it and the top of the tripod leg, it has a twist lock underneath the leg angle lock. Simply twist the lock on the monopod leg to loosen it and twist the leg itself. This will allow you to remove the monopod leg. The center column consists of two pieces and you'll have to separate them by unscrewing them. Once the top is separated from the bottom half, slide the bottom half down from the tripod unit and merge the center column back together. All that is left is merging the center column with the tripod leg.

As mentioned in the beginning of the review, it comes with a monopod pouch. To use it, simply attach the D-ring on the pouch to the belt loop of your pants and place the monopod foot into the pouch. This provides support and stability.

The video below is a quick setup and overview of the Fotopro C5i tripod.

Conclusion : Overall, the Fotopro C5i Camera Tripod Monopod Kit with FPH-52Q Ball Head is a great travel tripod. It's lightweight and has a small form factor and has everything you need right out of the box. If you want something smaller, Fotopro offers the C4i which weighs under 3 lbs. They also have carbon fiber tripods but it will cost you more.

Fall in Love Again: New Df D-SLR is Undeniably a Nikon with Legendary Performance and Timeless Design

Photo Pros and Enthusiasts Alike Will Embrace the Lightweight FX-Format Df D-SLR, Which Strikes the Ideal Balance of Classic Iconic Style and Advanced Imaging Technology

MELVILLE, N.Y. – The new Nikon Df is a modern classic designed for those who have felt a connection to their camera, who revel in the idea of going out to photograph an unfamiliar location, and who know the effort and ultimate satisfaction that is part of getting the shot. Announced today, the Nikon Df is a unique, advanced-level D-SLR that harmonizes Nikon heritage and modern performance in a lightweight and very capable FX-format camera. The new Df pays homage to the enduring style and controls of Nikon’s distinguished “F” series of 35mm film cameras, yet features technology similar to Nikon’s professional flagship D4 D-SLR. Released alongside the similarly styled AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition lens, Nikon’s newest FX-format D-SLR presents a versatile and reliable option to help passionate photographers truly achieve their creative vision.

“Nikon cameras have played an important role in documenting world history for the better part of 50 years, and have earned their position as a reliable tool that pros and enthusiasts can count on. The Nikon Df represents much more than a storied legacy of cameras; it’s more about giving the user a chance to truly enjoy the experience of taking amazing images,” said Masahiro Horie, Director of Marketing and Planning, Nikon Inc. “The design is unwavering, and the features are the latest in Nikon imaging technology. The Df brings together the best of yesterday and today for advanced full frame photographers.”

A Classically Styled, Thoroughly Modern Masterpiece

From a robust feel, to mechanical dials and finely detailed craftsmanship, the Df embodies the very best of Nikon’s photographic legacy. The classically styled camera recalls design cues such as a recognizable pentaprism and top cover, which is now constructed of durable, lightweight magnesium alloy. The top of the camera features elegant yet sophisticated mechanical controls for settings, letting users feel the tactile reassurance of adjustments, such as a familiar click stop for shutter speed adjustment. Additional dedicated dials also control ISO, exposure compensation, release mode and exposure mode, while modern controls are also easily accessible. The intuitive control layout allows for quick and confident setting adjustment, yet retains a solid operational experience that “feels like a Nikon camera.”

The Df has been designed with an emphasis on familiar intricate details made famous from previous generations, including the leather-textured top and grip, along with the body mounted shutter button with a threaded release port. The design also recalls the slenderness of the previous generation’s cameras, making this the smallest and lightest FX-format camera in Nikon’s lineup.

It isn’t all about good looks though, as this enduring design is coupled with legendary performance to create a very capable and extremely appealing FX-format offering for professionals and enthusiasts. The 16.2-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor of the Df is inherited from Nikon’s professional flagship D-SLR, the D4. The large 36 x 23.9mm CMOS sensor is praised for its ability to produce amazing image quality in a wide variety of lighting conditions. Whether shooting landscapes, wildlife or weddings, the frames captured with the Df exhibit amazing clarity, accurate color and a broad dynamic range. In addition, Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED 3 image processing engine helps propel image quality, yielding images with a natural color and depth, all while enhancing subtle and nuanced tones.

Additionally, like the professional Nikon D4, the Df performs well in a wide variety of challenging lighting conditions with an exceptionally wide ISO range from 100 to 12,800, expandable to a staggering ISO 204,800. The combination of low noise and wide range make this an appealing camera to take on the challenges faced by photojournalists and event photographers, as well as those who enjoy the pursuit of extracting otherwise impossible images using natural light.

A Feature Set for Passionate Photographers

The Nikon Df is engineered to enhance the experience of taking photos and represents a culmination of decades of experience and feedback from photographers in the field, the studio and the sidelines. From its proven AF system to modern connectivity and legacy lens compatibility, the Df contains the century’s best photographic features for an enjoyable all-day shooting experience.

AF System: The convenience and precision of Nikon’s 39-point AF system is proof-positive of the benefits of modern technology. With 39 selectable AF points throughout the frame for precise focus, the Df also features nine cross-type sensors, and seven AF points capable of working down to f/8. Users can also choose from a variety of AF area modes to match their shooting style: 9-point, 21-point, 39-point, 39-point with 3D Tracking and Auto Area AF.

Get the shot with 2016-Pixel 3D Matrix Metering and Scene Recognition System: This Nikon system analyzes each shooting scenario and determines proper camera settings, resulting in even exposures, accurate white balance and precise AF. To capture action sports, wildlife and other fast moving subjects, the Df has a continuous burst shooting rate of up to 5.5 frames-per-second (fps).

Compose with a 3.2-inch LCD Display and Glass Pentaprism Viewfinder: Users can easily compose through the high-resolution LCD screen or the bright optical viewfinder. The LCD screen has 921K-dot resolution, making it easy for users to adjust additional settings, review images or compose using Live View. Using the glass optical viewfinder, users will enjoy 100 percent accuracy and a bright field of view. What’s more, the shooting data presented through the viewfinder has also been updated and digitized.

Connect and Share Instantly: Another modern touch allows users to connect and share their images instantly using the optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter*(1). By connecting to a mobile device, users can download and share images or remotely fire the camera.

Features for Creativity: Photographing dramatic monochrome or vivid landscapes is easier with Nikon’s Picture Controls, which allow for the customization of color, saturation and tone. The Df also features built-in High Dynamic Range (HDR) to combine multiple shots with enhanced tonal range, and two to five-frame auto-bracketing. For maximum control, images can also be captured in JPEG, TIFF or RAW file formats.

Support for a Storied NIKKOR Legacy: In addition to being compatible with all current AF, AF-S, DX and AF-D NIKKOR lenses, the Df is also compatible with classic Ai and non-Ai NIKKOR glass. Thanks to a new metering coupling lever located on the bayonet, the user has the ability to once again enjoy their lens collections with renewed functionality. Full-aperture metering is also supported.

Accessory System Support: The Df is compatible with Nikon’s Creative Lighting System (CLS), letting users take advantage of i-TTL exposure or fire multiple units remotely using a Speedlight commander. To remotely trigger the shutter, the camera also supports the new WR remote system, as well as the threaded AR-3 cable release, which screws in to the shutter button in the traditional style.

A Classic FX-Format Special Edition NIKKOR Prime

The new AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition lens is the result of classic NIKKOR styling combined with today’s optics to create the ideal focal length companion lens for the Df. The design honors original NIKKOR Ai lenses, with colors, texture, and an aluminum mounting ring that is mated to the style of the Df. This lens is ideal for everyday portraiture, landscapes and casual photography, but offers a wide aperture and seven-blade diaphragm for natural image blur and a dramatic depth of field. Despite the timeless design, the 50mm f/1.8G is created with modern AF-S design benefits to give photographers rapid response, quiet operation and excellent sharpness and clarity throughout the frame.

Price and Availability

The Nikon Df will be available in late November 2013, invoking classic Nikon silver and black color schemes. The suggested retail price (SRP) of the Df (body only) will be $2,749.95*, while the Df and 50mm f/1.8 Special Edition lens kit will have a SRP of $2,999.95*. The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G lens will be sold separately for a SRP of $279.95*. For an additional flair of nostalgic style, Nikon is also offering black or brown leather carrying cases, the CF-DC6B and CF-DC6S (pricing and availability to be announced).

Review: Datacolor Spyder4PRO Monitor Color Calibration

Overview : The Datacolor Spyder4Pro is a display color calibration solution designed for photographers and creative professionals that need to match prints to their displays. It includes the ability to adapt to ambient light conditions. Spyder4Pro features a patented, full-spectrum 7-color sensor that can accurately characterize a variety of wide gamut and normal displays.

Spyder4Pro software lets you use the same sensor to calibrate your monitor, laptop computer, iPad, iPhone and projector. No other calibrator has this capability. The fourth-generation sensor uses double-shielded filters for longer life and better performance. On average, accuracy and precision are improved by 26% and 19% respectively.

Features :
  • Automated Color & Brightness Calibration: Spyder4Pro's simple, clear and automated process makes it straightforward to calibrate your displays to a reference condition
  • Full-spectrum color sensor: Spyder4Pro's patented 7-color sensor improves upon colorimeters that use 3-channel RGB sensors. Each Spyder4Pro unit is individually tuned in the factory to accurately handle a variety of wide-gamut and normal gamut displays with ease
  • Single sensor calibrates all your displays: Spyder4Pro works with your laptop, multiple monitors, television (with paid software upgrade on website), iPad and even iPhone. It works with LCD, LED, OLED, CRT and other display technologies. You can calibrate multiple displays connected to your computer
  • Improved accuracy and stability: The fourth-generation Spyder4Pro has double-shielded color filters for an even closer match to CIE color standards and improved long term stability. Average accuracy increased by 26% and consistency between Spyder units has improved 19%

Quality/Usability : For most photographers, color management is not something we have integrated into our workflow but to some, color management is vital to photography. Some must wonder why its necessary to calibrate your screen.

Well, calibrating your screen can save you time in post processing as it will give you a more consistent look and better color accuracy. As years passes, computer screens can change in how color is displayed. Your computer will think it's displaying the correct color but may be completely different. The Spyder4Pro will take a reading of what the screen is actually displaying and it creates a profile to adjust the colors where it is needed.

The Spyder4Pro is Datacolor's mid-range Spyder device. Spyder4Express is the lower end and Spyder4Elite is the higher end of the product line. There's also a Spyder4TV HD that lets you calibrate your HDTV. Spyder4Pro will cover most photographer needs since it calibrates all types of computer monitors (LCD, LED, CRT, etc.).

Included with the Spyder4Pro is the calibrating device, stand, CD and booklets. It included a coupon code for 20% off Zenfolio but it was expired. I didn't try to see if it was still active even though it had an expiration date.

The Spyder4Pro looks like a spaceship at first glass. On top of the Spyder4, are is an LED and a light sensor for ambient light. Underneath is a sensor that will calibrate your monitors color when it flickers through the multiple colors displayed during the calibration process. There's also foam padding on each leg so that it does not scratch your monitor. There's also a mount on the underside of the Spyder4 that lets you attach a suction cup for CRT monitors but for whatever reason, I didn't get that in my package.

Attached to the Spyder4 is a USB cable. The round oval piece attached to the USB cable is a counterweight for when you have to hang the Spyder4 over your monitor. It is adjustable as well if you need to adjust the counterweight.

Another piece that is included is a stand. This is used during the ambient light calibration and also to hold your Spyder4. Underneath is a tripod mount if you need to attach the stand to it. But I don't see why you would as you're mostly be placing it on your desk by your monitor.

Installation procedure:
  1. Ensure that the monitor has been turned on for at least 30 minutes before you begin the calibration process. Also be sure that there is no direct light shining on your display.
  2. Install the Spyder4 software with the included CD or you can download from the Datacolor website. You'll need to enter the serial number to activate the Spyder4 software.

*Note: Be sure to write down the license code that is provided and put it with the CD, as you'll need it if you ever need to install Spyder4 onto another computer. It will also be emailed to you as well.
  3. Plug the Spyder4 into a powered USB port before you launch the Spyder4 program.
  4. Once the program opens, you are presented with a checklist. Simply read through each item and move on to the next step. One thing to note, ensure that your monitor is reset to factory settings. If you're on a laptop or MAC, you don't have to worry about this.

  5. Now, the actual calibration begins. The program will guide you through the process. When the time comes, hang the Spyder4 over your display. Use the adjustable counterweight if needed. You may need to angle the monitor to assure the Spyder sits flat on the screen. It takes approximately 3 mins to complete.
  6. Once you hit "Next", your computer’s screen will start to flash a series of different colors and in multiple shades. The colors that flash will let the Spyder4 help calibrate your monitor correctly.
  7. After the calibration is done, it will ask you to save the custom display profile, which your operating system and color managed applications will use to correct your displayed colors.
  8. That's it, you're done!

After it's done being calibrated, you can check to see if its been calibrated correctly by opening the Spyder4Pro program and under CheckCAL, you can see the comparison between your current profile and the target. What I like about the Spyder4 is that you can compare your current settings against your previously uncalibrated profile. The difference can be pretty drastic.

If you're a color geek, you can compare your new profile to some standard profiles like AdobeRGB. There is also an option for advanced analysis that lets you analyze different settings such as gamut, tone response, brightness and contrast, and white point at different OSD settings. If you don't know what all this technical term is, no need to worry. So as long you're calibrated, that is most important. This is for those who are more advanced in color settings.

Conclusion : Overall, the Datacolor Spyder4Pro Monitor Color Calibration is a must have for photographers. Having the right color will ultimately affect the outcome of your image and consistency. The program is very easy to use during installation and calibration. To keep things consistent, calibration should be done every 6-12 months.
