Quality/Usability : I've been a big fan of Waterfield Designs and they have been my go-to company for bags/cases for my electronics. They make exceptional bags for laptops, tablets and mobile phones. Their products are well-designed, made from premium materials, and look fantastic. So when I got my new 15" Macbook Pro Retina [Amazon / B&H Photo / Adorama], you know I had to go to them.

I wanted a bag that would not only hold the Macbook Pro but also hold the charger and other accessories. The one bag that caught my eye was the Travel Express case.

I'm a plain person and went with the black nylon that is water resistant. They also have a tan waxed canvas. There's no external pockets.

Depending on the bag, Waterfield would sometimes charge for installing D-rings. With the Travel Express, the D-ring is included and can be used with a strap so that it becomes a messenger-style bag.

Waterfield offers two different strap options – the Simple Strap ($12) or the Suspension Strap ($22; pictured). If you have your own strap, you can use that instead.

You can also simply carry the case under your arm or slip it into another larger bag and use it as a sleeve.

The main laptop compartment is padded and big enough just to fit the laptop and fits snuggly. I have a smoked black plastic case that I use to protect my Macbook for accidental scratches but the Macbook wouldn't fit with the case on. So I'm left with no choice but to take off the case in order for me to insert the rMBP into the Travel Express case.

The Travel Express case is just large enough for you to keep your essentials in one place so that you can stay organized and travel light.

On the opposing side are interior pockets that ensures your devices will be scratch-free and safe while traveling; two elastic mesh-like pouches and three nylon padded pouches attached to the other side of the case. Any of the pouches can be used to hold your cables, mouse, cables and charger.

One of the nice features is the self-locking zippered closure. It opens along the top and side of the case. It makes it very easy to access your belongings but without the bag fully flipping opening.

Although the bag is water resistant, the zipper is your standard zipper and won't prevent any water from entering.

Conclusion : Overall, the SFBags Waterfield Designs MacBook Travel Express Case is a must have if you're carrying your Macbook around. The Macbook fits snug and is well protected. I love the fact that I'm able to carry the charger and other accessories all in the same bag and not separately. The strap is very comfortable and well worth the few extra bucks.

Drone Owners Required to Register Their Drones

The Obama administration said on Monday that it would require drone owners to register their unmanned aircraft as part of an effort to curtail rogue drone flights that pose a danger to commercial aircraft and crowded public venues.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced the creation of a task force of private sector and government representatives to craft recommendations for establishing the first ever federal drone registry.

The recommendations are due by Nov. 20, and administration officials hope to have the registry in place before Christmas, when they say that more than 1 million new drones could be given as gifts to new untrained operators. The registration requirements would also apply to drones already in use.

The initiative represents the administration's effort to address the rising number of unauthorized drone sightings near airports and crowded public venues. The FAA has reported more than 650 unauthorized drone sightings so far this year, as of Aug. 9, compared with 238 for all of 2014. If sightings continue at that rate, the number would near 1,100 by the year end.

Officials said a registry would help authorities identify the operators of rogue drones, a task that authorities have struggled to undertake so far. They also said the need to register drones would help educate consumers about restrictions near airports and public venues including sports events.

"The signal we're sending today is that when you enter the national air space, it's a very serious matter," Foxx said. As part of a parallel effort, the Federal Aviation Administration is also working with other agencies to develop systems that can identify and track drones or keep them away from vulnerable sites.

Foxx said the registration effort would not delay the FAA's goal of publishing rules for commercial drone use by next June.

But critics said the announcement raised more questions than it answered about how owners could be compelled to comply and what size, weight and power of aircraft would be included.

"People keep throwing around the million drones to be sold this Christmas number. That is a lot of people to educate and then convince they need to take the time and effort to register," said a drone industry lobbyist, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Review: Ho Stevie! Floating GoPro Hand Grip

Overview : Our Floating GoPro Hand Grip provides a simple way to capture stable footage, no matter what kind of adventure you are on.

Whether you are snorkeling alongside honus in Hawaii, or dancing across the Coachella stages, this GoPro grip shoots steady controlled footage.

It's not an extendable selfie stick, so they won't confiscate it at Disney, your favorite music festival, or anywhere else on the ever-expanding list of places that have banned selfie sticks.

Features :
  • 100% compatible with all GoPro HERO cameras
  • Floats your GoPro so you don't need a backdoor floaty
  • Adjustable wrist strap provides additional security
  • Offers stability and control to capture a variety of angles
  • Detachable aluminum GoPro mount can be used with tripods or other accessories with 1/4"-20 threading
  • Carbon fiber + aluminum construction ensures maximum durability, while still keeping it lightweight

Quality/Usability : After reviewing the Ho Stevie! GoPro Mouth Mount, we were contacted to see if we were interested in reviewing their new GoPro Hand Grip.

The packaging was in a basic generic packaging. Included was the hand grip, wrist strap, screw and Ho Stevie! sticker.

The hand grip pole measures about 6.5 inches from top to bottom, which makes it small enough to stash in a pocket, purse, or small bag. The carbon fiber and aluminum will never rust or corrode, providing a lifetime of functionality (and fun). This won't get confiscated from those that are banning selfie sticks since it doesn't extend.

The aluminum mount comes in five colors: Black, Red, Blue, Gray and Gold. It can be unscrewed from the grip and used with any 1/4"-20 threaded tripod or other accessory (this is the standard threading for most tripods). Or you can attach the entire grip to a tripod, with the threaded insert on the bottom of the pole.

Of course, this also means that you can use any 1/4"-20 threaded camera with the grip. Just unscrew the aluminum GoPro mount, and attach your camera.

The screw is your standard GoPro mounting screw but includes three washers. These can easily get lost. Maybe one is enough and they included extras incase it gets lost? But no instructions were included as to how to use them.

Use the adjustable wrist strap to prevent your GoPro from floating away while white-water rafting, or from falling into the abyss while skydiving. It has a nice little locking mechanism to keep it in place instead of the ones you might have seen where it just slides.

Its sleek and lightweight design make it perfect for any GoPro user, from beginner to advanced. Ho Stevie! grips float, which makes them perfect for any activity in the water. You don't need to attach a backdoor floaty to your GoPro like the Ho Stevie! Mouth Mount (those permanently stick to your GoPro case), this handle keeps your GoPro afloat all by itself.

It won't keep the GoPro floating due to the weight of the GoPro and the fact that the unit/case can't float, it will sink as you can see with the LCD Bacpac. The hand grip itself will float on the surface.

The grip is long enough for any sized hands. The thickness is also perfectly sized. Personally, I would have liked to see finger grooves or something to make the gripping slightly more comfortable. This would also let the user know which way is the front in the event that someone can't see underwater or in the dark.

Conclusion : Overall, the Ho Stevie! Floating GoPro Hand Grip definitely stays afloat even with the GoPro LCD Bacpac. It's lightweight thanks to the carbon fiber material. I like that you're able to remove the aluminum mount and put it on a tripod or put a camera on the hand grip. I like all my stuff to be black as it doesn't scream out for attention but for something like this, I would like to see a reflector or some color (even if its just the bottom half) to it so that if dropped in the ocean or pool, it is easy to locate.

DJI Reinvents the Selfie Stick With the Osmo

DJI is best known for its popular Phantom line of drones. But they are branching out in an unexpected direction: selfie sticks. The new selfie stick is called the Osmo with a built-in swiveling 4K camera and sophisticated stabilization, it's an all-purpose tool for people who want cinematic imagery but don't want to spring for a serious DSLR or camcorder.

The Osmo shares a lot of DNA with the Phantom drones because it uses a similar gimbal system for stabilizing footage shot from the air. On the ground, the system lets you shoot smooth footage at a variety of frame rates, or set it down to take a time lapse. And because the camera turns around (you can lock its orientation or adjust it with controls on the handle) the Osmo makes for a heck of a selfie stick as well.

  • 1/2.3" CMOS Sensor
  • 4K (4096 x 2160) Video at 24 or 25p
  • 120 fps Full HD Video for Slow-Motion
  • 12MP JPEG or DNG RAW Sill Photos
  • Handle with Camera and Gimbal Controls
  • Wi-Fi For Monitoring / Remote Operation
  • Detachable Mobile Device Holder
  • Photos Bursts at up to 7 Shots
  • Regular and Moving Time-Lapse Modes
  • Auto and Selfie Panorama Modes
The camera system is basically a sleek handheld stabilizer that comes standard with the Inspire 1’s X3 camera, which packs a 1/2.3-inch Sony Exmor R sensor with an ISO range of 100-1600 (100-3200 for video), a 20mm (35mm equiv.) lens with a 94° field of view, and DNG support.

You can also choose to buy the grip for a new X5 camera if you’d like a Micro Four Thirds sensor and mount.

But how do you view your footage live? By using your own smartphone and installing their app, this acts as the camera's display and provides more in-depth settings, connecting wirelessly up to 25 feet away.

The Osmo is certainly more expensive than your average selfie stick at $650. You're getting a high-tech stabilization system and a 4K video camera. Osmo is available to buy now at Amazon, B&H Photo and DJI.
