Review: Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Sling Strap

Review Peak Design Slide LITE Camera Sling Strap

Overview : Finally, a camera strap designed specifically for mirrorless cameras. Slide Lite contains all the revolutionary features of Slide™, but in a slimmed-down 1.25 inch (3.2 cm) wide strap, ideal for carrying mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. Anchor Link connectors let you wear Slide Lite as a sling, neck or shoulder strap, and aluminum quick-adjusters let you change strap length on the fly.

Features :
  • Slimmed-down webbing ideal for carrying compact/mirrorless cameras
  • Converts to sling, neck or shoulder strap
  • Camera stays positioned any way you like it without twisting
  • Silicone grip on top of webbing allows you flip strap over for non-slip stability
  • Ultralight strap packs down to fit in your pocket or bag
  • Attach, remove, and reconfigure with ease
  • Includes ARCA type quick-release plate for tripod compatibility
  • Durable seatbelt style webbing with lifetime guarantee

Quality/Usability : For those familiar with Peak Design camera straps, Slide Lite sits in the middle of their lineup. It's like the Leash and Slide/Summit Edition meshed into one. Not too bulky, not too skinny, it's perfect for your ultralight mirrorless companion.

I'm not going to go too much into detail about the Slide Lite but more of a comparison and differences between LITE and standard Slide strap.

The same item that is included with the standard Slide strap is also included with the Slide Lite: strap, standard plate, hex tool, two anchor links, two additional spare anchor links, a pouch and quick start guide.

The Slide Lite is a slimmed down version of the original black Slide strap. The strap slims down from 45mm (1.8") to 32mm (1.25"). Minimum length stays the same at 99cm (39") but the maximum length increases slightly from 137cm (54") to 144cm (57"). The Slide Lite still has the seatbelt-style webbing but due to the size, it doesn't have the thick padding inserted into the strap.

The lever handle which allows you to cinch the camera strap is smaller in width but the same design and concept where it allows you to grab the handle to have the camera closer to your body or loosened.

The strap still has the smooth on one side and grippy on the other. So depending on your preference, you can choose which one will suit your needs and shooting situation.

Unlike the big brother version (left), the SlideLITE does not have a black Hypalon with red stitching that connects the anchor link to the strap webbing. Now, the strap webbing loops through the anchor link itself.

The anchor links are pretty much a standard piece for all Peak Design products. They were first introduced with the Cuff Wrist Strap and Leash Camera Strap.

To attach the anchor points:
A. Insert the anchor cord through the the loop at the bottom of your camera (grip) or quick release plate that is used for straps.
B. Create a loop with the anchor cord and bring the anchor disc through it.
C. Pull the anchor disc tight. The knot you created is called a cow hitch.
D. Attach the Clutch to the anchor by sliding the anchor disc into the housing in the direction shown.
E. When fully inserted, you’ll hear a “click.” The anchor is now locked in. To disconnect, press down on the anchor disc with your thumb and push the anchor out in the direction of the arrow.

The standard plate is the quick-release plate that comes with the standard Capture® Camera Clip. It's compatible with most ARCA-type tripods and fits in Capture® in 4 directions. It is made of die-cast/powdercoated construction. Using the standard plate is optional but it's nice that they included it.

When I used standard plate with the G1X Mark II, the plate is slightly big and extends out from the body of the camera. So when I need a plate, I would use the MICROplate which has a smaller footprint and still allows me to attach anchor links. Otherwise, I prefer to attach the Slide Lite to each side of the camera.

Conclusion : Overall, the Peak Design Slite LITE Camera Sling Strap is a great companion for smaller cameras such as the Canon G1X Mark II, Canon G7x and mirrorless cameras like the Sony A7R II. I see the Slide Lite as a beefed up version of the Leash but with the Slide strap features and look and feel. It will work fine with smaller entry level DSLR's but once you get in to the mid-level/prosumer, I highly suggest the big brother Slide strap.

I've been attaching my G1X Mark II to the BlackRapid SnapR 35 bag/strap but the Slide Lite will be taking over the strap function of it from now on and the SnapR will be used solely for carrying and protection.

Press Release: Sigma Announces World’s First Protective Lens Made of Clear Glass Ceramic

RONKONKOMA, NY — December 16, 2015 – Sigma Corporation of America, a leading DSLR lens and camera manufacturer, today announced the new Sigma Water Repellent (WR) Ceramic Protector, a lens filter that features new Clear Glass Ceramic material and provides enhanced protective qualities. Pricing and availability is not yet available.

This shock- and scratch-resistant Clear Glass Ceramic was developed specifically for Sigma in partnership with a glass manufacturer. Made with a special heat treatment that evenly precipitates microcrystalline spinel throughout the materials, the Clear Glass Ceramic is 10 times stronger than a conventional protective filter and three times the strength of a chemically strengthened filter. The lens protector also contains WR coating, which repels water, dust and oil, and allows fingerprints to be easily removed. This enhanced protection helps to preserve the lens and ensure long-term, top-notch image quality.

“The Sigma WR Ceramic Protector is the latest example of Sigma’s dedication to innovative and first-to-market photography equipment,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “The new Clear Glass Ceramic protector is the first of its kind and the strongest material used in the industry. It will enable photographers to safeguard their lenses, while maintaining the impressive sharpness offered by high-quality glass, like our Global Vision line of lenses.”

Key features of the Ceramic Protector include:
  • Scratch-resistant – Sigma’s Clear Glass Ceramic offers a Vickers hardness number of 700HV. The strength of the Clear Glass Ceramic is much stronger than chemically strengthen glass and is; 10 times stronger than conventional filters
  • Thinner and lighter – This new protector is up to 50 percent thinner and is up to 30% lighter than previous Sigma filters
  • High transmittance – Sigma’s Clear Glass Ceramic offers very high transmittance, making it ideal for use as optical glass
  • Water- and oil-repellent coating – The water repellent coating reflects only 0.24 percent of visible light, thereby minimizing flare and ghosting. Its ability to repel both water and oil is also excellent, with water drops bouncing right off, and fingerprints easily to remove
This filter is offered in the most popular filter thread sizes, and is compatible with all Sigma lenses and other lenses that accept front filter threads that are 67mm-105mm diameters. Compatible lenses in Sigma’s Art line include: 35mm F1.4 DG HSM, 30mm F1.4 DC HSM, 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM, 24-35mm F2 DG HSM, 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM, 50mm F1.4 DG HSM, 24mm F1.4 DG HSM, 19mm F2.8 DN, 30mm F2.8 DN and 60mm F2.8 DN. Compatible lenses in the Sports line include the 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM and 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM. Compatible lenses in the Contemporary line include the 17-70mm F2.8-4.0 DC OS HSM, 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM, 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM and the 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM. As with all of Sigma’s lenses, the filter is checked with Sigma’s own Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) measuring system, “A1,” in the company’s factory in Japan.

Review: GoodHangups: Hanging System for Posters, Prints and More

[success headline="DISCOUNT"]As a follower of 1KIND Photography, you are eligible for a special 10% OFF discount. Details are at the end of this review![/success]
Overview : Do you have hangups about hanging up art? Do you worry about putting holes in your wall? Are you scared about damaging your photos? Are you frustrated by other solutions that never seem to work?

GoodHangups fixes all of the traditional hangups and problems with hanging art. Harnessing the magic of magnets and sticky notes to create a patent-pending hanging system, GoodHangups allow you to hang your art instantly…and they are removable and reusable!

It all starts with our MagnaStickers, magnetic-receptive stickers that you can put up and move around tons of times, without them ever losing their stick! Plus, they work with most strong household magnets. They are magnawesome!

Features :
  • No holes in your wall
  • No damage to your art
  • Easy To Use. Simply stick & click.
  • Removable and reusable

Quality/Usability : My wife is always asking me to hang pictures on the wall. This requires me to hammer a nail into the wall which leaves a small hole when removed. And now with a child, they/wife would want the "masterpiece" to be displayed.

I was contacted by the creator, Leslie Pierson, to see what our thoughts were on their GoodHangups Kickstarter campaign and if we would review it. Since this seems like a promising item especially for photographers, I agreed to review it and share it.

Included are reusable MagnaStickers and magnets. There are three different sizes available: LargeHangups (holds up to 24x36), RegularHangups (holds up to 11x17) and KidHangups (holds up to 8.5x11). The large and regular uses rare earth magnets where as the kids uses a ceramic magnet.

They also come in a pack of 8, 16, 40 and 100.

The MagnaStickers are magnetic-receptive stickers that you can attach to multiple surfaces such as plaster, wood, glass, concrete, brick and many more. They claim that it won't lose its stickiness as in won't dry out. You can reuse them tons of times. Of course, if it gets dirty, that's a different story.

The key to reusing them is keeping it clean (make sure you’ve got clean walls and clean hands when using them).

The rare earth magnets are fairly small but are very strong when attached to the MagnaStickers. If you're trying to peel two apart, it takes some effort because of the strong magnets. They can also be easily be lost so be careful. They don't have to be used specifically with the GoodHangups. It can be used on other magnetic surfaces.

You can hang posters, prints, photos, signs, dollar bills, flat painted canvas, printed calendars, recipes, stickers, banners, tickets (concert, parking, speeding), pamphlets, bills, christmas cards, receipts and so much more. Pretty much anything that is flat and not too thick that you would probably stick onto a refrigerator.

If you're like me who has a refrigerator that only allows you to attach magnets to the side of it and not the front, this would be great. As you can see, the side of my Kenmore refrigerator only allows me to attach magnets on the side. Even though the front looks metal, it's not and won't allow us to attach magnets. With the GoodHangups, all I have to do is place the sticker, the item I want displayed and the earth magnet to hold it in place.

Conclusion : Overall, the GoodHangups: Hanging System for Posters, Prints and More is a great way to hang up your cards, money, pictures and other items without damaging your walls or being able to hang it on a non-magnetic surface. We're now able to hang stuff on the front of our refridgerator.

It would be nice if they offered a clear sticker. This way, it isn't as noticeable when not used.
