CANON U.S.A. EXPANDS ITS LENS PORTFOLIO WITH THE NEW EF 85MM F/1.4L IS USM LENS AND THEIR FIRST-EVER MACRO TILT-SHIFT LENSES

New Canon EF Lenses Support a Variety of Photography Applications including Architecture, Portrait, Food and Landscape

MELVILLE, N.Y., August 29, 2017 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the new Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM lens as an addition to the Company’s existing 85mm focal-range lens line-up and three new Tilt-Shift macro lenses: the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro lens, TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro lens and TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro lens. Canon also announced a new Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT flash. These new products will help provide both advanced amateur and professional photographers the unique photography tools for a variety of applications and solutions including architecture, landscape, food, product and portrait photography.

“Creating a powerful, timeless image requires more than just a camera. It requires high-quality, well-crafted optics and flashes to capture compelling photography,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., “These new lenses along and the Macro Twin-Lite flash will continue to push the boundaries and expand the possibilities of what advanced amateur and professional photographers capture and share with the world.”

Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM Lens
Canon EF 85mm focal-length lenses are traditionally very sought-after options for portrait photographers. With that in mind, Canon is expanding its EF 85mm line up with the introduction of the new Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM; the first Canon EF 85mm lens to feature image stabilization, providing up to four stops* of shake correction for smooth and crisp imagery.

The EF 85mm utilizes one large diameter, high-precision molded glass aspherical lens and features an ASC coating. The large f/1.4 aperture produces shallow depth-of-field, fast shutter speeds and a bright image inside the viewfinder, allowing photographers to focus and compose their image reliably. In addition, a circular aperture with 9-blade iris allows for beautiful bokeh.

The New Canon EF 85mm f/1.4 L IS USM is scheduled to be available November 2017 for an estimated retail price of $1599.00††.

New Tilt-Shift Lenses
Tilt-Shift lenses have several applications for suitable photographers because of their ability to provide enhanced creative control over perspective through the tilt function and depth-of-field through the shift function in their images. This ability can be optimal when photographing landscapes, portraits, and architecture.

The image quality derived from Canon Tilt-Shift lenses has evolved considerably since their first inception several years ago. Enhanced optical elements like molded aspherical glass and UD lenses are at the core of the new Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro lens, TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro lens and TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro lens. These features provide users with edge-to-edge resolution, improved image quality over previous Canon TS-E lenses and minimum distortion. Canon also included two anti-reflective coatings, SubWaveLength Structure Coating (SWC) in the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L and TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro lenses and Air-Sphere Coating (ASC), into the TS-E 50mm f/2.8L and TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro lenses. SWC helps to reduce flare and ghosting, while ASC is a new technology that provides amazingly high, anti-reflective performance, particularly when alleviating incidental light that can enter a lens.

The new Canon Tilt-Shift lenses also offer improved operability over previous models, including larger tilt, shift-and-lock knobs, lock-release button and a new tilt-locking mechanism that firmly locks the lens in the zero-tilt position to help prevent unintended tilting to increase more precise shooting capabilities. The rotation of the tilt-shift lenses also allows users to freely change the axis of tilt movement and shift from right angles to parallel to better adapt to various shooting conditions and situations.

The new Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro lens, TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro lens and TS-E 135mm f/4L Macro lenses are scheduled to be available November 2017 for an estimated retail price of $2199.00††.

Canon Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash
To further enhance a photographer’s ability to shoot macro photography, the new Canon Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash can be the ideal tool. The use of a macro twin-lite allows for a more ideal lighting situation for photographers, and can be adjusted and shifted depending on the direction the photographer would like to control. Detachable macro twin lites can be rotated up to 60 degrees, and features a maximum guide number of 85.3 ft (26 m)**.

The new Canon Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash inherits the ease of use and operability of Canon’s latest Speedlite EX series flashes and increased brightness of the focusing lamp compared to previous Canon Macro-Twin Lites. There is also less noise produced from the charging of the lights.

The new Canon Macro Twin-Lite MT-26EX-RT Flash is scheduled to be available November 2017, for an estimated retail price of $989.99††.

Quality/Usability : So what is different about this Cuff 2017 than the previous Cuff that we reviewed? A complete redesign and relaunch for 2017.

The product packaging isn't what's redesigned but its the product itself. The Cuff is now available in two colors: black and ash. Included with the Cuff are two anchor links, Peak Design sticker and a nylon pouch.

The black and ash follows other color-ways in terms of color theme and uses the same seatbelt webbing like all of their other straps. The length is about the same as the outgoing version but the design has been refreshed to look much better and higher quality. There is now an anodized hardware that acts as your sliding and lock mechanism.

The seatbelt style nylon webbing is slightly thicker and has a tighter weave which makes gliding smoother and more durable.

The black has hypalon material with red accents where as the ash has NuBuck leather with blue accents. The Peak Design lettering isn't as noticeable on the black but it is on the leather. The stitching is top-notch as always. Like all other Peak Design products, it uses their anchors as a attachment point and even they have been slimmed down.

You must be wondering what is that squarish thing on the strap (more visible on the ash but is also on the black as well). That is actually a magnet. I will go into this a little further down.

The anchor links also have a slight redesign to them as well. They are just as strong as the predecessor but the cords are thinner. This is great because it can not fit through smaller eyelets on smaller cameras.

The pucks are also slightly angled which makes snapping it in place much easier.

Great thing about these anchor links is that it is backwards compatible, so it will work with any Peak Design strap that you currently own and the new Cuff will work with your old anchor links.

Here you can see how the strap looks when mounted. Typically, I would place the strap on the other side but I have a hand strap currently there. But this gives you a general idea of what it looks like when attached to the camera.

The Cuff has a new adjuster system. The previous Cuff required a two handed operation and the hardware was made of plastic. Now, it's made of aluminum and it can lock in place by sliding it all the way down.

The new system allows you to wear it in two modes. The left side is loose. So you can easily slide your hand in and out easily. With the old Cuff, it would sometimes tighten on its own when tugged on. The right side is cinched. With a simply pull or tug on the strap, the strap will cinch around your wrist. This offers a much more security.

If you want to loosen it, you will need to use your other hand though.

Remember that squarish magnet I mentioned above? Well it actually allows you to wear your Cuff like a bracelet when you don't need to use the Cuff but want it close to you. The magnet attaches to the back of the anchor unlike before where it required an anchor link. I don't know what kind of magnet was used but I don't think it is neodymium earth magnets. I only say this because there isn't a strong connection like what I have experienced and if you bump your hand on something, the anchor will fall off.

Conclusion : Overall, the Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap (2017) looks a lot better than its predecessor thanks to its redesign from the ground up. The new adjuster system is simple and works great. No more automatic tightening. You just have to make sure that the hardware is fully pushed down and locked in place. Otherwise, it will cinch on you.

I personally would have liked a stronger magnet for when the Cuff is put into bracelet mode. Otherwise, the magnet is great for being discreet.

The original Cuff retailed for $20. With the new relaunched Cuff, it jumped up $10 to $30. But it does look a lot better.

Quality/Usability : So what is different about this Leash 2017 than the previous Leash that we reviewed? A complete redesign and relaunch for 2017.

The product packaging isn't what's redesigned but its the product itself. The Leash is now available in two colors: black and ash. Included with the Leash are four anchor links, anchor mount, tool, Peak Design sticker and a nylon pouch.

The Anchor Mount is a new product and its made from machined aluminum. It mounts directly into your tripod mount on the bottom of your camera. It allows you to attach an anchor to the bottom of your camera. It's small and discreet.

However, it's not a quick release plate. It's simply a mount to attach your anchor to.

The anchor links also have a slight redesign to them as well. They are just as strong as the predecessor but the cords are thinner. This is great because it can not fit through smaller eyelets on smaller cameras.

The pucks are also slightly angled which makes snapping it in place much easier.

Great thing about these anchor links is that it is backwards compatible, so it will work with any Peak Design strap that you currently own and the new Leash will work with your old anchor links.

The Leash has new adjustment hardware. Unlike the old Leash where it had one adjuster, the relaunched Leash has two adjusters.

The seatbelt style nylon webbing is slightly thicker and has a tighter weave which makes gliding smoother and more durable.

The hypalon and aluminum hardware makes adjusting the strap very easy and no hardware dangling. It's really minimal and discreet. You can even adjust the strap with just one finger.

Here is the Leash attached to a Canon 5D Mark IV DSLR. It's mounted to the top left and bottom of the camera. I personally think that the Leash is too thin for a full-frame DSLR. It would go perfect with a lighter camera such as a lighter DSLR, point and shoot, mirrorless camera or binoculars.

The Leash will also go great with other Peak Design products such as the Field PouchRange Pouch or CaptureLENS.

So since the strap is an ash color-way, how does it match up to the ash in the Everyday Backpack, Messenger 13, Messenger 15Sling and Tote? Despite the materials being different, the gray color are close and it's hard to capture it in pictures. The Leash also has more shine to it than the bags.

Conclusion : Overall, the Peak Design Leash Camera Strap (2017) is all newly redesigned from the ground up. The new hardware and hypalon pull makes cinching and loosening of the strap really easy. It also helps when the seatbelt nylon material has also improved. The new Leash has two adjusters which is great but I personally only use the one on all my Peak Design straps.

The original Leash was priced at $35.00. So the new strap did have a little price hike.
