Kickstarter: MagMod – Magnetic Speedlite Modifiers

A new photography product has launched on Kickstarter. That project is known as the MagMod. According to the Kickstarter page and inventor, Spencer Boerup, "MagMod is the simplest, easiest, strongest, fastest, and sexiest speedlite modifiers for Canon and Nikon hot-shoe flashes, period."

The MagMod is a simple magnetic band that mounts to your flash allowing modifiers to be slapped on and off via N52 Neodymium magnets.

To help back the MagMod or if you're interested in purchasing a MagMod, you can do so by pledging for one on their Kickstarter page. It starts off at $55 and the price increases when you add more accessories like a MagGrid and MagGel.

Below is a video of what the MagMod is all about.

Review: Plaber HPRC 2550W Wheeled Hard Case with Cubed Foam and Interior Cordura Bag

Review: Plaber HPRC 2550W Wheeled Hard Case with Cubed Foam and Interior Cordura Bag

Overview : The Plaber HPRC (High-Performance Resin Cases) HPRC2550W Hard Case is a lightweight, waterproof, unbreakable case. It is also crush, acid and corrosion proof and meets ATA 300 specifications for transit cases. The case also meets IP67, STANAG 4280, DS 81-41 standards for vibration, temperature exposure and impact. The interior is empty allowing you to use optional foam or pack it in any configuration that meets your needs.

The hard-resin shell is virtually unbreakable, and the interior rubber O-rings keep the case air and watertight. HPRC wheeled cases have a smooth low-profile backing that houses a high-strength aluminum telescoping handle. This efficient design translates into a clean finish on the back side of the case, while the use of aluminum delivers a stiff feel for complete control between the handle and case. The hardware is all stainless steel and bolstered by reinforced corners and hinges. The case also comes with smooth-gliding wheels, soft-grip handle for carrying and an air pressure release valve. The case is sealed with double hinged latches for a firm closure that will accept an optional TSA (Transportation Security Administration) approved lock.

The case can be used to carry anything but is targeted for transporting delicate, expensive and valuable audio, photo or video equipment and accessories. HPRC cases are used by the military, nautical, police and many other factions to protect their gear from dust, dirt, water, impact and corrosion. HPRC backs the case with its lifetime replacement warranty.

Features :
  • Double-hinge locking latches for secure closure and comfortable opening
  • Neoprene O-ring to keep the case air and watertight
  • Micro-textured surface to reduce scratching
  • Performance certifications from ATA 300, IP67, STANAG 4280 and DS 81-41 (military-grade)
  • Temperature Rating of -40 to 176°F
  • Pressure relief valve to maintain water tightness
  • Molded-in space for identification tags
  • Super-soft grip, rigid handles for field comfort
  • Wide smooth-gliding, molded-over rubber wheels
  • Male-to-female ribs for stacking

Quality/Usability : Plaber HPRC may not be as well known as Pelican to some but the style and quality looks to be about the same. Protecting your gear is very important since your gear is an investment and can cost a pretty penny.

The HPRC (High-Performance Resin Cases) is made of a hard-resin plastic shell that is corrosion proof, acid, waterproof and virtually unbreakable. Acid proof? I don't know anyone who would have access to acid but I'll take their word for it. I placed the HPRC in my bathtub and there was no signs of leaks or water entering the case. I haven't noticed corrosion either considering majority of the case is made of plastic and who would bring their case into salt water? As for unbreakable, I didn't take a sledge hammer or run it over with a monster truck but I did sit on it and stand on it as it would be something I would do in a real world environment. There was no signs of damage to the case.

Those curious since it has a handle and wheels, this will fit in the overhead compartment of a plane.

The hand grip has a security feature that prevents it from being pulled up. In order to lift the hand grip, you would need to push the spring loaded grip to the right. This will allow you to lift the hand grip up. Once the hand grip is locked into place, you'll need to press on the red tab on the back of the case. By pressing this red button, this allows you to lift the handle up.

Like the Pelican cases, HPRC cases feature a purge valve. HPRC uses a AirEx which is a new automatic purge valve that is auto press release adjusted to changing environments automatically. It won't unscrew from the case, and the new valve works through a medical filter which permit the air exchange but protect from water, air, dust, sand, humidity in extreme conditions.

The interior dimensions measures 20.08" x 11.22" x 7.83" and the external Dimensions measures 21.46" x 13.78" x 9.05". Plenty of space to store stuff without padding.

Below are two options on how to line the inside of the HPRC 2550W case; cubed foam and interior cordura divider bag.

Cubed Foam:

Cubed foam is also known as Pick-and-Pluck foam. The cubed foam comes with 4 foams: cover, bottom, middle and top layer. The cover which looks like egg crate foam which protects the exposed item. The bottom layer is nothing but a piece of foam that protects the inner bottom of the HPRC 2550W case. The middle and top layer can be plucked. It's just a matter of how big your gear is and how far down you needs to go.

The cubed foam is offers great protection and ensures that your gear won't shift or move during transit. I don't like cubed foams because once the foam is plucked, there's no going back. So if you go from zoom lenses and decided to go all prime lenses, what you plucked out will be too big for the smaller lenses and will require you to buy new foam. So if you're the type that changes gears a lot, I suggest not going the foam route unless you don't mind buying new foam every time the foam is no longer reusable.

Interior Cordura Bag:

If you're looking for something that can change along with your gear, I suggest getting dividers. Included with the interior cordura bag is two foam, cordura bag, 3 dividers and a roll of velcro. The foam adds protection at the bottom of HPRC and also raises the bag higher. With the dividers, it will require you to cut them depending on where and how you want to use them. You'll also have to cut pieces of the velcro to make the dividers adhere to the bag (video below on how to do this).

The cordura bag fits perfectly into the HPRC 2550W hard case. Since the bag has a cover flap, there is no need for the egg crate foam on the underside of the cover flap. Even if you wanted to use it, you can't because it won't close.

The bag is well constructed and durable. The zippers can be slipped into an elastic band to prevent it from flopping around. If you don't use the cordura bag with the 2550W case, you can use it separately. It has a handle and two plastic d-rings on each side to attach a shoulder strap. There's also a pocket on the bag to allow you to slip in papers, magazines or small nick-nacks like USB cables or memory cards.

Below is an overview of the HPRC cases and tutorials on how to use the cubed foam and dividers.

Tutorial on how to use cubed foam:

Tutorial on how to use internal cordura

Tutorial on how to use soft padded deck divider kit:

Conclusion : Overall, the Plaber HPRC 2550W Wheeled Hard Case with Cubed Foam and Interior Case is a great case for those looking for maximum protection. The quality and protection it provides is a great alternative to Pelican cases. The cubed foam offers maximum protection and minimal movement but can be a downfall if you swap gears often. The dividers offers the flexibility to change the layout along with your gear but requires you cut the length you want and the ability to customize your layout. However, if you make a mistake in measurement or need something different, you'll have to buy new dividers.

What I love about these cases is that even if you don't have padding or need to protect anything, these are great to use just as storage with or without padding. I can use it as a storage for tools in the garage, storage for bedding or even storage for toys or food. There's so many possibilities.

Review: Peak Design PRO Plates - ARCAplate, DUALplate, MICROplate

Peak Design Coupon Code

[success headline="DISCOUNT"]As a follower of 1KIND Photography, you are eligible for a special discount. Details are at the end of this review![/success]
Overview : Everything you could possibly want in one quick-release plate. PRO Plates works in ARCA-type tripod heads, and can also be configured to fit in both ARCA and most Manfrotto® RC2 tripod heads. Slides in Capture in 4 directions, and contains 4 loops for connecting Peak Design Anchors. MICROplate slides into Capture in 2 directions and has 1 loop for hand straps or Peak Design Anchors.
  • ARCAplate* – a revamped version of Capture’s standard plate, works with most ARCA-type tripods and slides into Capture in 4 directions.
  • DUALplate* – works with most Manfrotto® RC2 and ARCA-type tripods and slides into Capture in 2 directions.
  • MICROplate – fits perfectly on Micro 4/3 and slim-body cameras, works with most ARCA-type tripods and slides into Capture in 2 directions.
*Note that the DUALplate and ARCAplate has been replaced with the PROplate.

Features :
  • Machined and anodized aluminum construction
  • D-ring connection screw with hex drive
  • Injection molded twist-resistant rubber pads
  • Sling strap compatibility
  • Lifetime guarantee

Quality/Usability : If own the Peak Design Capture Clip v1, Capture Clip v2, CapturePRO or plan on getting one but don't own a Arca-Swiss ball head, don't worry. Peak Design has additional plates for Manfrotto RC2 users and for those with Micro 4/3 and point-and-shoot users.

All Peak Design plates are machined and anodized aluminum. They all feature an injection molded twist-resistant rubber pad and a D-ring connection screw with hex drive.

The standard plate that is typically included with the Capture Clip is the ARCAplate. The ARCAplate is designed for owners of Arca-type tripods. You can insert the ARCAplate into the Capture Clip in any of the 4 directions.

The DUALplate is designed for those who own a Manfrotto tripod specifically with the RC2 head. As the name applies, it is also compatible with Arca-type ball heads as well. The DUALplate is essentially "universal". Unlike the ARCAplate, you can only insert the DUALplate into the Capture Clip in 2 directions.

The third plate in Peak Design's arsenal is the MICROplate. It's basically a smaller version of the ARCAplate and will not work with Manfrotto RC2 but can only be inserted in 2 directions like the DUALplate. This fits on smaller cameras such as Micro 4/3's, slimmer camera bodies and point-and-shoot cameras. So if you own any of these, you don't have to worry about the plate protruding from the bottom of your camera. Depending on your camera's size, it may block your battery door.

As mentioned above, each plate has a D-ring that you can use to tighten onto your camera or use a hex key to tighten it. My only complaint with the D-ring is that it is hard to pull up when folded down because I didn't have enough room to lift the D-ring up. I need a coin, a pen or something to help assist me.

Conclusion : Overall, the Peak Design PRO Plates - ARCAplate, DUALplate, MICROplate are great options if you want additional or switched from RC2 to Arca-Swiss or vice versa. I personally feel you'll need either a ARCAplate or DUALplate and a MICROplate, if you own a smaller camera. This way, you don't have to constantly swap plates.

[alert headline="ALERT!"]The DUALplate and ARCAplate has now been replaced with the PRO Plate. Everything you could possibly want in one quick-release plate. PROplate works in ARCA-type tripod heads, and can also be configured to fit in both ARCA and most Manfrotto® RC2 tripod heads. Slides into Capture in 4 directions. Press Release: Sony Announces A7 & A7R Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras

Sony has announced the A7 and A7R, both of which are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. What makes these new cameras different from the rest of them is that they each feature full-frame sensor. That makes these the smallest, lightest full-frame cameras with swappable lenses to boast full-frame power, and with a 36.4 megapixel sensor on the A7R, and a 24.3 megapixel one in the A7.

The new Sony A7R also omit an optical low pass filter, which results in better resolution and detail rendering. Both of these new cameras have a new BIONZ X processor, a hybrid AF system that uses both phase and contrast detection for quicker focus, an OLED Tru-Finder hybrid optical viewfinder and a 3-inch rear screen that can be tilted.

Both camera models also has NFC and Wi-Fi for easy pairing and direct transfer of photos to devices, with dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium alloy cases. They take a new full-frame E-mount lens, of which Sony will release five in time for launch, and they also work backwards with standard E-mount lenses designed for the NEX series, albeit with some cropping. There will also be an adapter for Sony’s A-mount lenses, which work with their non-mirrorless DSLR range.

The A7R and A7 will both go on sale in December, for $2,300 and $1,700 for body-only, respectively. There will also be kits available with some of the new lenses.

To preorder your Sony A7 or A7R, you can purchase from these following retailers:

A7R Camera

Designed for professional photographers and highly advanced enthusiasts, the new A7R model is the world’s smallest and lightest full-frame interchangeable lens camera2.

It has an impressive 36.4 effective megapixel full frame sensor and no optical low pass filter, ensuring that the extraordinary resolving power is fully realized and resulting in an unprecedented level of detail and clarity in images.

The camera features a new Fast Intelligent AF technology that delivers blazingly quick, accurate autofocus. Additionally, there are a total of three selectable sizes for the Flexible Spot AF frame, minimizing the risk of accidentally focusing on the wrong target.

A7 Camera

Offering an exciting entry into the world of full-frame photography, the A7 camera features an advanced 24.3 effective megapixel full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor paired with the powerful new BIONZ X processor.

The exciting new camera has an innovative Fast Hybrid AF system that combines phase- and contrast-detect AF methods to ensure speedy, accurate autofocus. It can also shoot at up to 5 fps continuously with non-stop AF tracking, allowing it to keep pace with fast-moving athletes, wildlife or energetic children.

New Sony A Lenses and Accessories

There are a total of 5 new full-frame E-mount lenses designed to take full advantage of the powerful imaging capabilities of the A7R and A7 cameras, including mid-range zoom lenses from Sony and Carl Zeiss, two bright Zeiss Sonnar T*™ prime lenses and a premium-quality G Lens™ telephoto zoom.
